Hi all,

After a bit of a delay, I’m finally sharing my first impressions of a prototype gravel wheelset from XM Carbonspeed. I had a chance to chat with Peter from XMCS at Eurobike and received the wheels at a discounted rate in exchange for providing honest feedback here.

Unboxing & Initial Impressions
   •   Finish: Matte satin surface, golden water-transfer logos, raw titanium spokes, black hubs and nipples – very clean, high-end look.
   •   Rim profile: 42 mm outer / 33 mm inner width. Looks massive at first glance, but pairs surprisingly well with 40–45 mm tires and creates a smooth aero transition.
   •   Build quality: Excellent. The internal finish is flawless – no carbon debris, resin residue or visible imperfections.

Measured Weight (kitchen scale)
   •   Front: 615 g
   •   Rear (HG freehub): 720 g
   •   Total: 1,335 g

The XDR version is ~3 g lighter. Very impressive numbers for such wide rims with titanium spokes. XMCS claims T1100 carbon – which could explain the low weight, assuming durability holds up.

Tubeless Setup
   •   Tape: Buckless 35 mm
   •   Valves: Buckless aluminum
   •   Sealant: Schwalbe Doc Blue (60 ml front / 65 ml rear)
   •   Tires: Tufo Gravel Thundero – front 40 mm, rear 44 mm (both used)

Setup was straightforward – both tires seated immediately with a Tyre Booster.

Measured Tire Widths (@32 psi, compared to Zipp 303s)
   •   Front: 39.6 mm → 43.6 mm
   •   Rear: 43.3 mm → 47.6 mm

Next Steps
I’ll be testing them further on my custom titanium gravel bike – visually a perfect match. Ride impressions to follow soon.

If you have any questions or want specific feedback, feel free to ask!

40mm deep? Either the hub is a tank or titanium spokes aren't as light as I imagined.
I am very interested in titanium spokes nonetheless. Is there a word from Peter about them? How much does a spoke weigh, and does he have data for stiffness and comfort?

Sorry, I forgot to mention: the rims are 53 mm deep.

I don’t have detailed spoke specs yet, unfortunately. The hubs are in-house designs by Peter (XMCS), featuring high-quality bearings and a 36T ratchet system.

Wow, very cool wheelset. 1330g is just crazy.

1) Are they hookless? Can't tell from the pics.
2) Can they be ordered without spoke holes?

Thanks

Re 1) No, the rims are hooked. For me, that's a big bonus.

Re 2) You'll have to ask Peter, but I would guess yes, since the nipples and spokes are very similar in dimensions to standard spokes (such as Sapim CX-Ray).

I have ordered these myself, but with CX-RAY spokes. They are expected to weight 1380gr according to Peter. Will probably ship this or next week - so i'll get final weight quite soon.
Will be really fun to try them soon.

Looks nice with the bike. Who made the bike for you?

radrick_91: what inner width are the zipp wheels you are comparing with? Thinking about tyre stretch, and about how much wider tyres will be compared to my 24mm inner width wheels.

The design is my own, and I had the frame custom-made by Waltly.

The Zipp 303s I used for comparison have an internal width of 23 mm and are hookless – I hope that helps with your decision.

Depends on configuration. But they were 670USD with CX-RAY spokes, and i was quoted 770USD with titanium spokes. Choosed CX-ray to have something widely available rather than something harder to find.
Shipping depends on country but in my case $115.

Sorry Peter, i cannot remember that you told me that, but i'm usually quite distracted, so that is probably just on me.
Anyway, cannot wait for the wheels and Sorry for writing wrong pricing here. Good value anyways!
