Cheap 1xX groupset
« on: August 14, 2025, 03:10:22 AM »
I'm playing with the idea of building a gravel bike. Not really to ride traditionel gravel, but to use for winter/bad weather bike. I'm tired of punctures on my race bike, so that's the reason I go for the option for wider tires.

So I don't need the best of the best. I need something to the cheaper side. But I need some help. I think Chinese groupsets are bit of a jungle.

I don't care if it's 1x11 or 1x12. What are my options? What cost can I except to pay for a full groupset.

i've bought 3 ltwoo R9 groups on AliX for 180-200 eur. Hydraulic brakes. 2x11. People are happy. You can certainly go cheaper, but i'd say it means you dont need to spend more. There is a law of diminishing returns though, if you spend half as much you'll get something really crap, for eg. A bike needs good shifting otherwise it's very unpleasant to live with.
ltwoo does make a 1x gravel type group, but i know nothing about that neck of the woods. Presumably it's cheaper, as the left shifter is simpler and you skip the FD.
Btw, having ridden the schwalbe marathon plus while commuting in london for years, these used to be bomb proof. If you're only solving for puncture protection, could be worth considering. If you happen to like them, you can then buy a shitty wheelset so they live on that, and you swap accordingly.
Maintaining 1 bike is a lot simpler than maintaining 2.

Thank you! I will have a look.

It's funny you mention the Marathon tires. I've the wheelset that my Merida Reacto came with, that I plan on putting 32 mm Marathons on to start with and use until I feel like spending more on the "new" bike.

There is more reasons why I prefer two seperate bikes. One is that I will always have one "permanent" on the trainer. The other is that if I end up actually want to do gravel then I've the base. Then I can always upgrade wheels and so on.

I'm going for the Velobuild Aero Gravel.

Hydro brakes or are you ok with cable actuated?

I would prefer hydraulic. Also when it's used for bad weather/winter bike, the brakes are the most important part.

Cheapest price for L-TWOO GR9 and GRT seems to be here:

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mO55rYp

Sensah 1x12 is here but a little more expensive:

GRX 1x12 doesn't seem to have much availability on AE yet, still quite new. You could try getting the R7120 shifters/brakes and then sourcing a GRX rear derailleur elsewhere.

Thank you!

The Ltwoo one does not send to my location (Denmark) apparently. But the Sensah is a fine price. Especially in a few days (back to school promo).

Wonder if it's even cheaper at Black Friday. I'm not in a rush. Just placed the order for the frame 1 hour ago - it might take some time for it arrive.

Any crank recommendations to go with it?

The ltwoo get is also available in mechanical braking for a bit less, minus calipers.

I installed the hydraulic version of this on a MTB frame with drop bars. The shifting was surprisingly crisp and set up was fairly easy...

Word of warning for anyone considering, be careful with the adjustment bolt, I stripped mine but was easily replaced.

At that price range you might also consider Microshift Sword / Sword Black
