TPU puncture repair... more than one way

 TPU tubes are cheaper than butyl tubes. But I am sure all of us want them to last as long they can still be useful

I was looking at switching over to tpu. I been using them as my spares for just incase... So I was wonder what is different accessible ways to repair them... I found this video. one different ways of patching.  Has anyone tried anything that has worked real good?

I'd only use them if you have non-tubeless compatible wheels. I recently mounted a wheelset with GP5K tires and TPU tubes and it felt so squishy to me. I took them off and slapped on some tubeless tires on there. They feel SO much more firm and solid. I'll never go back to tubes.

Interesting, I've had Pirelli TPU tubes last for about 10000km. One is still holding on and the other didn't puncture, but the valve stem cracked because I tightened the core too hard. I did get a leak from a badly glued valve stem on a RideNow one, though. In my experience, TPU is by far the best option for tubes in terms of puncture resistance, feel and weight.

Thanks for this video.  I just spent several months loving my TPU tubes.  I was forced to fit a pair of Vittoria Terreno Dry tires to my new Elite rims.  The Michelins I'd bought for them were not even close to fitting the new rims. I'd given up on the Vittorias over a year ago after I installed one and got 7 flats in 200km (with butyl tubes) but I was left with no other option so I put them on the new rims with TPU tubes this time.  I rode 2000km without a problem and wondered whether TPU was the secret to transforming the Vittorias from garbage to gold.

I suddenly ended up with 3 flats in one weekend.  Each of the TPU tubes that has lasted 2000km went flat, but with the same tire, since the second puncture happened after I swapped front and back and the new tube went onto the back wheel with the less worn tire that had been on the front.  With the first tube that failed, no problem.  I quickly found the leak when I submerged it in water.  The second one then got a slow leak and I had to swap it out on the road and by the next morning the new tube had gone flat too.  The second and third ones, though, showed me no bubbles when submerged.

Watching the video, I see I'm not the only one who has found that detecting the leak in a TPU tube is very tricky.  I finally did with the other two tubes but they are so slow an tiny.  The other thing I liked about the video is that Reginald does the same thing with the indelible marker.  I find that to be a slight advantage over butyl since the bright colours of TPU allow you to see a marking where black butyl would not.  I still haven't tried patching yet.

One question I have for the OP is why you would say that TPU is cheaper than butyl.  I'm finding they can be similar only if I buy Gustavo from AliExpress.  Any other brands or sources and I'm looking at far more money than I'd spend on butyl.  Is this only because I'm comparing gravel tubes?

So far, I've tried patching two RideNow TPU tubes. I didn't ride them too long, and each had just one small puncture hole. If the TPU tube is somewhat old or has a dodgy valve, I wouldn't bother trying to patch it.

I cut out a small patch from an old tube and glued it on with 'CAMPLAST - Cement' glue (pretty cheap and strong stuff). After letting it dry, I put some more glue around the edges of the patch. Don't know if this is the best method, but it doesn't take a lot of work, and I haven't had a problem with those tubes so far.

Also interested in trying the 'melting method' from the video above.

For off-road tires, I have to say TPU is very good. I have a set of 26er wheels that I wanted to run tubeless, but unfortunately they won't bead when deflated. I opted to use TPU 26er tubes and they've been very solid and weigh significantly less than butyl. Also since they're not inflated to high pressures, they're quite durable at 30psi!  ;D

The metal valve RideNow tube comes with patches. I've used them to patch a snakebite puncture and it's been holding up well for me.
