150T Chosen Hub Issue
« on: November 14, 2025, 11:24:02 AM »
I have an old set of Intrepid brand wheels that are having an issue with the hub slightly losing engagement and slipping/skipping a little. It looks like this was a US wheel vendor, but they've gone out of business a few years ago. The hub has their branding, but I've recently deduced that it was made by "Chosen" as the OEM. They seem to sell some under their own name, but mostly make hubs for other brands. Their picture of their model  SFH-09BH-D26-D driver is an exact match for mine, including counting the number of little teeth on the pawl.

It's a 150T hub with 3-pawls. When I first noticed the issue, I took it apart and noted that it seemed very dry, so I put a squirt of grease in there. It didn't improve. I was then told that hubs like this can have issues with being "dirty" and that cleaning may help, and also that hubs with lots of teeth like this can be picky about grease. I took it apart again and cleaned it thoroughly (pics below show it caked with the grease I used, and also dirty). After cleaning, I lubed it with Dumonde Freehub Oil, which is very lightweight. I only did this yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to really try it out. A quick circle around the block late last night makes me think that it didn't significantly improve the issue though. I still noticed the occasional single tooth skip or slip as the hub lost engagement.

I see some brands sell "rebuild kits" with springs and pawls, but I see no such thing for my hub. It looks like, maybe, I could buy the whole driver from Chosen, but they have no storefront. I reached out to them to see how to proceed and haven't heard back yet. Can any one offer any help or advice? Any other trick I can try or maybe some other source for parts?

Edit: The issue was not resolved after a good clean and lube with light oil. It might have even been worse, but it certainly wasn't better. I then read that maybe the first thing to try to replace was the springs. I took it apart Saturday night and bent the springs so they would engage the pawls with more force. Sunday's ride was much better. I still had some engagement issues, but not quite as bad as before. I'm afraid I'll need parts (pawls, springs, maybe a whole new driver) to actually fix it.

For future reference for anyone who might stumble upon this in desperation, I did fully identify the problem and find replacement parts. Unfortunately, they were not from the OEM and I never found an official channel for them. However, it looks like a UK company called RSP sold wheelsets that used Chosen hubs and someone on eBay had New-Old-Stock parts sitting around and being sold cheap. Not so cheap after paying import taxes and stupid tariffs and shipping to the US, but still cheaper than a whole new hub and without the labor. They were not being sold as "Chosen" hub parts, but rather "RSP 150T" or "RSP 150P" hub parts. The pictures were absolutely identical, though.

As for the issue, it appears that the pawls weren't actually losing engagement and "slipping" in a traditional way. Rather, the aluminum driver body itself had little sockets that the pawls sit in and pivot in. Those little aluminum pockets were being eaten away at and it allowed the pawls to back into them to the point that they would lose engagement.
