Go-to budget carbon XC wheelset
« on: April 20, 2026, 09:04:00 AM »
Hi,
Unlike with road and gravel wheels, I'm not really up to speed on carbon XC wheelsets, so I could use some help.
What are the current go-to budget options for XC? I'm looking for a ratchet-based hub, a 27-30mm internal width, and ideally, I'd like to stay around or under the 1500g mark.
Also, what's the general consensus on hookless rims for MTBs? Are they as controversial/problematic as they are on the road, or are they a safe bet for XC if the price is right?

From personal experience with the brand I recommend EliteWheels, I have been using them for over a year and have never had any problems, I saw that they also have a product line for XC, try giving them a look, they should meet your needs https://it.aliexpress.com/item/1005001677435823.html.

i haven't had a problem with hookless, but i'm a 125lb, cat 3, xc racer...  so ymmv,  but i do only run 15.5psi F/ 16.5psi R and no liners...

Buddy of mine has some Elites he likes.    I grabbed some Serenade wheels 5 or 6 months ago and have been beating them up pretty good in the chunk without any issue whatsoever,  $615 to my door, 1125g, 30m iw. https://serenadebikes.net/Ultralight-Asymmetrical-Mountain-Bike-Wheels-30mm-Internal-Width-22mm-Depth-Rims-With-m270-Boost-Hub-p6805953.html   They were a little more than the Elite, but i wanted super light, and dealing direct with the company seemed nice.

There's a thread over in the mtb section about xc wheels too... https://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,6085.0.html
