Title: japjoe7 Carbonda FM1001 build thread
Post by: japjoe7 on August 02, 2023, 10:27:45 AM
First dual suspension bike. Been riding a hardtail for many years. Can't afford to throw down $4k-$6k in one shot so I'm leveraging AliExpress and using used parts. It's still expensive of course but a least I can build it up over the next 6 months. Here is my list of components so far. and attached Excel spreadsheet with cost. The build will be a little dynamic in that I will change some conponents choices depending on how I'm feeling and research. I still have a bunch of stuff to add to my list.

Btw, I'm from Pennsylvania in the US.

While I'm waiting on a bunch of stuff to be delivered from AliExpress. Food for thought. I'm using ZTTO M1 hubs(DT Swiss 180), RYET 28 hole rims, Pillar straight spokes in a 3 cross pattern. This'll be interesting. DT Swiss calulator says I can do 3 cross this way. I bought the spokes based on this calulation. Thoughts?

Brilliant - I am thinking about moving across to this frame - currently riding a Polygon Siskiu t7 that I have upgraded just about all components of, so I would be doing a frame swap.

What brakes are you going with?

Are all prices in USD?

Oh yeah, I missed the brakes in there haha. They are Shimano M8100 with resin pads from Ali. Added to the list above. Yes, in USD. Also, fixed the PDF price sheet.

With straight pull spokes, the cross pattern is determined by the drilling angle on the hub. My 28 hole hubs were 3 cross so I suspect that is correct for you as well, but it would be a good diea to verify before starting to lace the wheel. Just stick a few spokes through the holes and see how many crossings you end up with.

2 cross or 3 cross?   ;)

Keep in mind that one of the crossings is right by the head of the spokes and is usually hidden inside of the hub flange. If there are two crossings away from the hub, you have a three cross hub.

At least 3 crossed haha. I bought the spokes based on the length of 3 cross. If all else fails I'll just need to buy new spokes and do a 2 cross.

Sounds like you're well in range with spoke lengths, see Ztto suggestions  below for the M1 based on a 583mm ERD, Ryet says there ERD is 581, I measured 582.  Did you order the rear hub delivered with the 36t stars?

I went by RYET ERD of 581 with 28 Spoke, ZTTO M1 28 spoke and used DT Swiss Spoke calc. Pic above show what they suggest for spoke length. I’m getting differing opinions on spoke length which I expected. We’ll see if these Pillar spokes work when they arrive.

I ordered the 54T ratchet. I know they have caused problems with others. I’m pretty light on my feet so we’ll see if they hold up. If not I’ll just swap them out for DT Swiss ratchet’s.

Received my used Sram Eagle GX-1295 yesterday. It's got some rust I need to clean up. Getting some other stuff delivered today. Will post pics later.

Used Sram GX-1295 10-52 -
Had to do a lot of work to get it clean. Teeth are very good but coating is sparse. I used rust remover overnight and it took off some of the coating on the steel rings. Bought it for $100usd, retail is $415usd, not sure if it’s still a good deal considering the condition. Would not recommend buying a used cassette.

ZTTO M1 28 XD hubs -
Very well made, feel very sturdy, internals look great too. We’ll see if the 54 tooth ratchets will hold up.

Pillar Spokes -
Triple butted, these spokes are THIN. Kinda worried how they’ll hold up.

OneUp dropper remote -
Bought new and not on Ali because I didn’t see any on Ali that looked aesthetically pleasing to me.

Few more things getting delivered later today

I'd second SRAM BBs looking / feeling cheap... and lasting about 9 months. I've started using Z-Race off Ali just because they're cheaper. Will see if they last longer.

Love the build and the updates!

RYET rims and TOSEEK handlebars came in the mail yesterday, Will post pics later. Dropper post getting delived today as well.

Rims are very nice, soooo light. Laced one up to see if the spokes are the right length, I think they’ll do just fine.

Dropper is a 170mm, it’s pretty heavy. I was expecting it to be lighter. I also think it may be a bit too long for me.

Handle bars are super light too. I ordered a 660 instead of a 760 by accident. Put in another Ali order for the 760.

Prepping frame, covering holes and sanding. Btw, didn't want to bother taking out the bearings since you won't see the frame holes anyway. I'm pretty precise so it shouldn’t be an issue with the paint.

Welp, come to find out Kenda Rush Pro TR tires I wanted may be a scam from the store I ordered from. May need to do a credit card charge back. End up ordering Continental Race King 29x2.2 from Ali for $52usd.

I spoke too soon apparently, the Kenda's shipped. Judging by all the VERY poor review of the vendor I expected not to get the tires. We'll see if they are the right ones when I receive them. I guess I'll have 2 new pair of tires now lol.

You should still expect not to get the tires: You may be dealing with scam 5 or 11 from this list https://www.reddit.com/r/Aliexpress/comments/hlk157/common_scams_on_aliexpress_and_how_to_avoid_them/

Wow, that's good to know thanks! But, the Kenda tires I ordered were from a US vendor blueskycycling.com. They had super bad review and hadn't shipped for a full week so I though I got scammed. Luckly they did ship and I'm awaiting delivery today. I'll update once I get them to see if I recieved the corect tires.

On a good note, all the purchases I've made on Ali(17 in total) so far for this build have been great. All shipped, correct products, and on time delivery.

The best things to do when ordering anything from someone you have never purchased from before is to do your research. I was careless when I orded from blueskycycling.com. Had I read reviews before hand I would NOT have orded from them.

UGH!! I underestimated how much spray paint I’ll need. I’ll need another set of primer, mid coat and topcoat. I’ll have the small arms and rocker arm done but I’ll have to wait on the body until I get more paint. Waiting on primer to cure so mid coat tomorrow.

Took me half the day to setup the canopy, attach the plastic walls, put the fan and filters in, and make the rack hanger. 2 trips to Home Depot because I didn’t have enough plastic. 3M respirator worked great, didn’t smell anything.

Got some base on and sanded. More purple than I was expecting, not too bad though. Once I get the clear on and buffed it’ll look amazing. More paint is on the way so I’ll get everything finished next week since I took the whole week off work.

The last pic is a gif, download it so you can see the color shift blue to purple.

Also, this doesn't include buffing the paint which I already have the equipment and supplies.

You can always have the frame seller paint it for you for $50+ but your limited to colors and from what I've read a lot of people see there paint flaking.

I want to build every aspect of my bike myself, even the paint.

As a fellow Pennsylvanian, I'm struggling to come up with anywhere I've been in PA, NJ, NY, and DE where I would ride that setup with those XC tires and have a good time :)

Awesome build!

One thing that I don't see posted a lot is I-Spec EV to SRAM that also work well for AXS - https://www.bike-components.de/en/3min19sec/Matcher-I-Spec-EV-Adapter-p68602/  Cleans up the cockpit a little bit.

Weather’s been super crappy the past couple days. It’s been too humid to paint. Should be good on Thurs. to pick painting back up. In the mean time I bought a full Park Tools wheel build setup. Very expensive but I’ll end up reselling most of it once I’m done.

I actually have a park very close to me to ride that’s mostly XC thus the tires. I also ride rail trails with my father quite a bit too. I don’t need very aggressive tires for 85% of my riding and I don’t ride in messy weather. I have Conti’s too if I want to switch. I wanted a more aggressive setup so if I want to use it’s there. I could have gone full XC build but I want flexibility.

I do have the adapters to combine the brakes, shifter, and dropper. That’s one thing I really wanted from the beginning. I’m a bit of a minimalist/OCD/perfectionist if you couldn’t tell lol  ;D

Appreciate the enthusiasm!

I have a bone to pick with the company I got my paint from. Even though the mid coat is from the same batch the first can I used for the arms have virtually no green, just purple and blue. The second can I’m using has some nice green in it. I don’t think the batch was mixed well when they filled the cans. Nothing I’m going to do now. I’m not going to strip the arms and start over. I’ll be sure to let the company know though.

Arms are already clear coated and wet sanded for buffing. Would just be way to much more work unfortunately.

Grrrr damn it! I think I’m just going to respray the rocker. The rear arms I’m not too concerned about.

Been polishing a bit after work each night. After this I’ll be installing Xpel Ultimate Plus 7.

Finished polishing, now on to installing paint protection film. Tracing out templates, cutting, then installing.

Got some more stuff I forgot to post the past few weeks. Tubolight wheel inserts, Tubolight valves, Stans tire sealant, Shimano brake oil, Shimano brake fittings, Secret Chain wax, Sram foam grips, RYET 3D carbon Aircode saddle.

Had high hopes for the saddle but just isn't for me. It's nice and cushy but hurst my butt only after riding half a street block. Looks like for now I'm sticking with the Avocet O2 Air 40R I've had for almost 20 years.

I love the Ryet 3D saddle.  i have it on my XC bike and it is really comfortable.

I have a bony butt lol prob. why it’s uncomfortable for me. Do you wear a chamois when you ride? I didn’t try it with a chamois yet.

I was hoping it was good but I don't get on with it either.  I use it on a drop bar frame on a trainer with a chamois and I can get maybe an hour out of hit before it is too uncomfortable to continue.  Tried it as a reasonable priced experiment instead of the handful of $100-$300 saddles I also find uncomfortable.

First time lacing a wheel. Man, this is a pita! You really need to be perfect with the amount of turns you make all around. Gunna take the first one apart and do over, tension is all over the place. I gotta say though it’s really nice having the Park Tools to do it.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book on wheel building. For the tiny investment it is worth it: https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php (https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php)

I printed the lacing / build procedure chapter years ago and use it was a step-by-step guide so I get everything right whenever I build a wheel. I have built dozens of wheels, and still find this really helpful. Last used a week ago when building new wheels for my Miracle FS822 build (240 front / XTR rear on Dartmoor Tomcat with Sapim Lasers and alloy nipples) - and I'm very happy with my work!

I pretty much stopped right now. I don’t have the patience to lace the wheels. I think I’m going to either pay someone to do it or buy another set that’s already put together. Everything else is done. I think I may also send the Fox X2 to Fox for service. I think I have air in the reservoir. It winter here so I’m not really riding right now. I’ll wait till after the holidays to make a decision on the wheels.

Bought a full set of extra hardware. $90 shipped from Carbonda. Full bearing measurements are in the FM1001 / FM1156 - 135mm frame thread.

That’s very reasonable pricing, I’ll have to put in an order for a set. Nice that it seems to come with absolutely everything, as the OEM grommets and bolts aren’t the toughest.

How long did it take to arrive/what carrier did they use?

Took 3 weeks. She had free shipping but it was at least 4 weeks.

Got some good updates for today, It’s been awhile. Sent my Fox Float X2 out to be serviced a couple days ago. Didn’t even use it on the bike and something didn’t seem quite right with it. I bought it second hand but it looked like new. Got a message from Fox service that they are replacing it with a new ‘24 version at no cost…sweet!

Finally got my wheels finished. Payed a local shop to finish them up. It was too frustrating as a first time wheel builder to get it trued. Super nice guy and I paid him $75 to do both wheels.he said that didn’t do too bad of a job getting them started.

Biggest update…bought another frame, BXT-MTB-117 in gloss white, no logo. I’ll start another build thread with that when I get the frame.

Bought some more goodies for the bikes. Stepping away a little from the Chiner components and got Raceface Turbine-R Stem, Shimano XTR clipless pedals, Peaty’s/Chris King Valves, Cane Creek 40 headset, OneUp carbon handle bars, OneUp v3 Dropper, Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate. I’ll post more pics as the components get delivered.

Don’t have it in hand yet. They just shipped it so I’ll have it in about 7-10 days. I’ll weigh it once I get it. I’m pretty sure it is heavier than the Santa Cruz Hightower but by how much we will see.

Are there rubber grommets to go on the cable entry points into the frame?

Yes, all around except the head area. The frame is too thick around those holes for the clips to fit. I may need to do some grinding or sanding.

YES! Way lighter than I thought they’d be. I have a feeling I will need to swap them out because the side walls will be too flexible. I do have Tubolight insert in them though.

With tires like these you will limit bike potential to a down-country territory at best. Around 850-900g per tire is kind of minimum reasonable, think of new Purgatory in T7 or T9 or EXO Forekaster as minimum from Maxxis. I used DHF MaxxGrip for all the colder part of the year, considering something little faster for warm period, but never an XC tire.
I would also reconsider simple SPD before you mount them for Shimano trail pedals for better support, it makes difference which is worth extra grams.
