Component Deals & Selection / Super Boost Wheel Sets

Tried the search function but didn't come up with anything. Short version, need a set of SB wheels.

Long version, taking my AM831 components and moving them to an Evil Offering frame I just bought. I know I need new wheels since the Evil is super boost. What else do I need? Cranks?

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Carbon Rims - More money = better?
« on: November 25, 2021, 11:06:07 PM »
I bought a pair of Carbon Beam 29" 30x30 rims for my ICAN build, put them on Venfort DT copies for a total built weight of 1425g. I chose the lightweight 315g for front and AM 360g for the rear. They are cheap at $130usd each including delivery.

However in less than 100km the rear is destroyed by a rock strike. Now I get that rock strikes aren't warranty, however when it comes down to it, the seller advertises these as AM with a weight rating of 120kg for mountain bike use. I didn't even hear the rock strike and have been pretty careful on this bike to ensure my riding isn't as enthusiastic so to speak as my heavier duty enduro bike. That said, I have destroyed several aluminium rims over the last couple of years, but they are a LOT cheaper too...

I had a look at Lightbicycle, they have a great writeup on different layups and light/standard/heavy duty layup options, however their rims come out to $366 ea delivered.

Is a $366 rim less prone to destruction from rock strike than a $130 rim?

To answer your question, yes, the LB or any of the other 4 or 5 brands you see lots of good recommendations for on Chinertown would be better (I'm partial to Btlos but wouldn't hesitate to buy the others).  I'd expect higher quality and also better service.  I had a friend crack a rim in a similar situation, first week or so of riding and no mark on the rim.  After a few questions and some photos, he was sent a new rim.  No need to name the company, they've got lots of positive reviews and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them if I needed a new wheel set.

Does the rim show any strike marks?  Did you reach out to Carbon Beam?

I read an article on pinkbike or another similar page where a world cup rider needed a DH frame of a very big size (like XXL) for him and the company was reluctant to do it as the cost is around 100K usd for the mold and such a big size has very low sell appeal to the normal customers.
This squares up with numbers I've seen, $60k-$100k per mold. Figure a 2 piece FS frame has to be on the higher end. I remember a few years back there was a startup that had a process for 3D printing CF parts.  Their PoC, and the reason it caught my attention, was a funky shape bike frame.

Make sure the fit system is 360 degrees. I bought a Chiner helmet and the head band that you adjust by turning the nob was not 360 degrees.  It only went a little over half way around the back of my head.  Doesn't fit as good or feel as comfortable.

Congrats. So where did you buy it? I got mine from Winow on Aliexpress, missed the group buy deal from Haideli, but a few problems have been reported on the Haideli version, none of which I had with the Winow version... Am I lucky, or is there a quality difference between the various AM831 manufacturers?
None of them will say this, but I'm pretty sure they're all from the same factory. When working on the group buy, I contacted many different vendors about the AM831. Only one of them claimed that they were the manufacturer.  They also said it didn’t matter where I got the frame, it was coming from their factory.

I figure it's probably true based on all the vendors starting to deliver frames at the same time. We waited a long time and no one had frames.  Then all the sudden, everyone has frames.

Hello from Russia!
I buy such frame in L size and white color from another aliexpress seller.
Briefly:
This is high modulus carbon frame like original SJ MY19.
But... i kill tread on one rear bolt (M12 body and M11x1 tread) - make new from В95Т1 alloy on home lathe.
Top eye shock M6x1 bolt was 90 degree champfer, but frame (as original) have 120 degree champfer... make new from В95Т1 alloy on home lathe.
There is no holes for place hosings in middle tube (as in original manual), but SWAT hile is absent and all housing plased in bottom tube.
I buy dropper OneUp v2 180mm. Frame have slight problem to place dropper more than 17cm, but i cut 1mm from diameter of dropper ass and get 22 cm!
Original bolts have rubber seal, i simple print TPU seal on printer.
Complect seat post clamp have ~40.5mm diameter instead 38.6mm, buy right item on aliexpress.
Original flipchip have big size and you need mill additional space in yoke if you whant it. As i understand that tight flipchip block bottom eye frop any rotation. But default china yoke set in "XC" position - not bad choice.

Geometry precisely mathed to info by aliexpress lots! But have no such geometries in linkage web base. See attached *.itx file for linkageX3 software.
For this frame maximum drive chain about 32T, but pedal efficiency at this 90..80%, if you move gravity mass to front - efficiency increase. I think that 28T (or may be 26T oval) and 9..42T cog wery good variant - for 28T drive antisquat about 100..110%.

Positives:
$800
Nice look.
Light weight (may be it good moment).
Compatible with  "old" common 210x55 shox - simple to find in sale section.

Negatives:
No SWAT! $(
No frame guards (use 3d printer...)
Decals above paint lyers. I use oraguard anti stone TPU film.
Frame have very thin wall in BB link region - may be this is normal, but...

Good job making everything work correctly.

Hi, Nik in Glasgow Uk.

Just received a FM936 and really looking forward to building it and riding it.

I was directed to this forum from Singletrackworld.com where I've been a long term member. This is such a good place to get advice about what's good, what's not, and more importantly how well issues get dealt with.

cheers all.
Welcome Nik. Have fun with the 936.

New owner here, love the frame, I'll post some thoughts after a couple more rides, just got a few initial questions I couldn't find answers to on here:
1) what are people doing to plug up the cable holes on top of the chain stays? Or is it easy to just wash out when mud gets down in there?
2) supplied hanger doesn't seem to work with my slx 12 speed, only way I can access the smallest cog is to add a fat washer to locate the derailleur further outboard. Yes I checked hanger is straight, and limit screw all the way out. Anyone else find this?
No problems with my XTR derailleur. I think I have an extra hanger if you want to try it.

Mine is quiet. Didn't wrap the cables and don't notice them knocking around. Actually intended to put pool noodle chunks by the headtube and BB, but forgot to do it. I had a knock in my BB when it loosened over time, but tightening it up took care of it.

Does it not come with one?
Not sure on the FM10, but you should always ask. I assumed all frames came with the rear axle and derailer hanger until I bought a Chiner that didn't. Now I ask because it's a whole lot cheaper to buy and ship them with the frame than it is to do it separately.

Got my moss green medium today. I'll post some pics and weight tomorrow. Ordered a DT Swiss F535 160 to go up front. Missing a few small things, but will get started on the build.
