Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Hello and good morning!

Also new to the forum, there is some great info around this thread, i haven't been able to collect and read every page yet, but you stumble upon some good stuff.

I think once i got confirmation, i'll compile it down to a google sheet for everyone to consume.

In order to prepare the build i collected the torque specs for all the bolts from Chris:

Seat post clamp6.0Nm
Seat post saddle8.0Nm
Front Derailleur4.0Nm
Rear Derailleur2.0Nm
Handlebar mounting5.5Nm
Shifters on handlebars5.0Nm
Axle10.0Nm

I would also like to get the specs from the axle, but he only mentioned that they will be on the axle itself. has anyone found a link for this on the Robert Through Axle project or elsewhere? I will probably buy another one.

He also said that the SL7 headset compression ring + Di2 seatpost battery holder should work.

For the Bearings i got these specs so far, will post an update once i got it all confirmed:

Inner width38.1mm
Outer width52mm
Height???mm
Outer Angle45deg
Inner Angle45deg

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Also as promised, i collected all the specs and products from reading every page that i thought matter to collect here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NpMFVEhRhZikKWWa3ZGyseyyIX_4spwQJXQ4DVVXCTA/edit#gid=0

It includes torque specs, bearing specs, alternative headsets + stems, SL7 parts, bolt specs, geometry table and links for the loctite that i used

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Finish the build today, cannot ride it yet tho, Wax has to dry as well as the retaining compound of the BB.
Not so sure why it's so heavy, it's 8095g for everything, including pedals.

I had my fair share of issues:
  • Headset is absolute trash, you can still see the bearings underneath what they call a "seal". Give this 1 ride in the rain and you will grind this down. I will replace those.
  • The SL7 Compression Ring is not compatible for me. My fork had a seam on one side that made everything super stiff, i took the sandpaper out to remove the seam, but the ring was still too tight.
  • The Small Chainring on the crank was rubbing against the frame. I had to get a shim to put it on the crankshaft of the drive side to give it some space. Scuffed the paint a bit..
  • the SL7 Di2 Battery Grommet works. Specially at the bottom. I bought 2, so i would make sure the battery won't dangle with the top in the seat tube. Had to cut one down with a scissor so it would fit.
  • Don't know if i can fix it yet, but the saddle isn't centered to the frame and points slightly to the right.. my OCD is triggered. But i haven't messed with the saddle clamp much, maybe there is a way
  • The brake mount surfaces are not machined and need facing. One more trip to the bike shop.
  • There was a small void in the carbon layer of my tube that i was able to see after i cut it down.
  • The SL7 seatpost cover works great

will see how it performs after i can do a few rides on it

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
I believe what @vTuga is ultimately asking is whether or not the fact the brake mount surfaces aren't faced, actually prevented the brake calipers from being properly aligned.

Ah, yes. They are rubbing constantly on one side and i tried to remount the brakes multiple times. I also use a rotor shim that i put between the brakes and the rotor for spacing. But no matter what, it still rubs. Only thing i can imagine is, that the surface is uneven and therefore there is a tilt in the caliper that is causing the rub.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Are you using those flat adapters for 160mm rotors, or are you using 140mm, mounting the calipers directly on the frame?

I use both 160 front and rear, so I’m using the adapters for both. They are OG Shimano ones.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Here is my final build now. 8.1 kg including everything, bike computer, bottle cages (with hidden multitool), pedals, mount etc.

I think it turned out great.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
I'm going to build my 168 with a SRAM Force AXS groupset, with a DUB crankset. What kind of bottom bracket would you choose? I was leaning towards the official Sram BB86 DUB BB, but I'm worried about the durability. Maybe I should go for a more premium BB, like Kogel, C-Bear or Ceramic Speed? What do you think?

From what i heard, C-Bear, Ceramic Speed, Kogel are all shit and overprized. Either go for Sram itself, Hambini or Token. Not sure Hambini has one, but they are also coming with quite a price tag. I heard good things about the token ones tho, but that was for the thread together design. the DUB diameter is a bit too big for the diameter of BB86.

If anything and what also Hambini recommends: try to stick to 24mm axles, they will actually be stiffer and give you more clearance. I know there are rotor aldhu cranks, with 24mm axles, that might be compatible with Sram? Maybe they even have 24mm versions?

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Interesting. I didn´t know of Token. But from a quick search, I haven't found it for sale in Europe.

About the 24mm axles, I could try a Sram crankset with a GXP axle. I don't know if other options exist compatible with 12s sram axs groupsets.

I'm pretty sure the Rotor Aldhu 24 crank should work, you would just need to find the chainring, that works with a Sram Chain. Since it's modular, you can change it quite easily. Peak Torque made a video about their modular system and it was reviewed quite nicely in terms of manufacturing tolerances. There is a discussion about the topic here too.

there is also a token dealer locator: https://www.tokenproducts.com/dealer-locator

The reason on why i would avoid DUB, is that the space is just to narrow for good bearings. Also ceramic speed and cbear are quite shit for the price and ceramic bearings don't really make sense, since they are the harder material within a softer shell, so you will def. get grooves over time.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Yeah I know, it would be the first upgrade I do. I just need to hold out a bit to find a deal on a red 46/33 or 48/35 power crank on ebay.

Headset question: the compression-ring of my headset ends up quite high, and as a result the headset cap does not sit flush with the frame (between 1 and 2mm gap). I've seen others talk about getting a less high bearing, but mine already measures 7mm. Does anyone know if I could find a less high compression ring? My google-skills let me down.

Problem with that one is, that the top cap they have does not have a rubber O-ring. That would mean, that the topcap would scratch the paint. I think there are 6-6.5mm bearings available.
