Title: Another build thread XM CS-R01
Post by: Daviddavieboy on December 12, 2024, 06:00:08 PM
Please don’t flame me for starting another thread for this frame. I have a terrible memory and want to keep what I am doing in one thread. This arrived today WAY ahead of when I thought it would land.

Wow, that was fast, I didn't expect so fast delivery. Looking forward to your painted job on the frameset :)

I only ordered it on NOV 30 and it was shipped out right away. It certainly helped that I wanted it bare primer.

What came was frame, fork, seatpost/clamp thru axles, 2 derailleur hangars, headset and some cage bolts.

I must have made Peter swear at times with all my questions and delays in answering him back but he was always professional with me.

It looks almost perfect to me with the only things noticeable is a little piece of plastic? In the bb area bound to the carbon and a small ‘chip’ in the headset bearing area. The bearings slide in easier than I prefer and feel a little loose so I will try again when I shoot a coat of epoxy primer in the area.

I was hoping my 35 Gravelkings would fit but alas they do not. The is a little clearance but not as much as I would like. FWIW the tires on my 28mm external width rims are measuring 36.88 mm so an all season tire might fit ok. The pictures are of the fork, the rear wheel won’t go in at all. If the derailleur hangar was angled back a little to clear the cassette the wheel would just fit with the 35 tire mounted.

That's right alright, what's the max clearance you think?

Fit dialed in and parts collected with some more on the way - let the fun begin.

I was very pleased with the frame under the primer - I found no filler in the carbon. Seemed to be primed with 2k primer (very good stuff)

While on the trainer I experimented with some tires- The measurements were with a caliper on the outside of the casing and both left 2mm clearance.

 Front will take a 700 x 40mm
 Rear will take a 700x35

Love the colour scheme!

I was thinking just last week that I'd like to build a bike with that kind of colour scheme. I have some of the La Vie Claire cycling team kit in the same style (as worn by Lemond and Hinault back in the 1980's).

Look have a frame in a similar style as well.

Thank you, I was a BIG Hinault fan in the day myself.

This is what I am putting on the downtube.

Sometimes things get stacked against you. Firstly the heat quit in the painting area. Because of the cold (0-5C) my gun would not flow, tried an airbrush all it would do is either clog or if I diluted the paint too much to flow it wouldn't cover. Ended up using a airbrush I use for primer and sprayed pure acrylic and left in my house to dry. In a month I will go back and touch up with an airbrush and spray epoxy clear on it. I think a matt finish would look the best. I should have the heat fixed by then.

2 weeks ago I painted my old race bike an most went well. I would have been pissed is otherwise LOL
