Post by: kanuto on December 30, 2024, 02:32:42 AM
I was browsing taobao and noticed this new crankset

24mm Ti spindle
Adjustable length
Weighs around 340g

Anyone had any experience with them or any thoughts??

Links would be nice. Design looks fine, the spindle is externally machined so won't be the lightest

not sure if I remember seeing this 'MEGA' brand before, not even mentioned here in the forum...

either way, the adjustable length is really interesting!
let's see when it pops up in Aliexpress how much it'll be, since through TaoBao it cannot be shipped to outside China, right?

I like the adjustability between 165mm, 167.5mm and 170mm. Though I wondering how secure that interface is? If not properly torqued, it'd be pretty nasty to shear off the pedal from the crank arm!  ???

it's a copy of look crank inserts, if they did a proper job, it's fine

In that respect it's like getting 3 crank lengths in one. I wonder what chainring interface they're using?

Bit of a surprise they're using the Rotor interface.

Aside from that, I note the same store is now selling the 2.0 version of WheelTop EDX (XO) MTB stuff.  It looks interesting to say the least.  Am I behind or has this just dropped?  There's nothing on WT's website about it.

Just occurred to me.  Are they associated with WheelTop?  Because WheelTop now have a majority stake in Rotor ...

Im not sure about that. I think no one here have have yet to purchase. The price of this crankset fairly reasonable.

This is an old thread now but in case anyone’s interested I spotted these on AliExpress yesterday - pretty insane price at just under $60 as part of the current discounting.

https://a.aliexpress.com/_EwH1m8m

I dropped them a message to confirm if it came with an axle. They got back pretty quickly confirming it comes with a titanium axle. They’ve sent over a few pictures and they look good.

Will have to see what they’re like in person but for not even £40 I’m happy to roll the dice.

Would the adjustable interface be solid enough?
Scary to think if goes wrong while sprinting at high speed

What spider interface does it use? The SRAM 8 bolts?

Rotor.

Look used a similar interface for years. Whether these cranks are up to those standards, I'm skeptical. Zero feedback seller, and the price is probably less than what just the spindle is worth.

So, a new guy in the first message advertising a new store (less than a month fresh) with zero rating/feedback and the only crankset available with an inadequately low price for the carbon+titan combination? I guess nothing's wrong here, let's buy, everyone, right?

What size is the spindle?  The price is unreal.  I see that there are two Rotor based options for the crank.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Like I’ve said I’ve taken the chance given how cheap they are and that the store was responsive to my questions. If they don’t ship them then I’ll get my money back, so happy to roll the dice.

Only shared in case it peaked anyone’s interest.

I have been reading reviews from the original Look cranks with this interface and they don't come across very well. I think most people get creaking noises. Look no longer sells but then again they were mad expensive for what they were

I ordered them as well, no risk with Aliexpress, so far they always refunded me when something went wrong... and even if I lost 40 CHF it's not the end of the world...

The link is still working for me, and the listing is still live - from what I can tell anyway.

I did do abit more digging and if click through to the seller information and then ‘business licence’ it has an exs-cycling.com email address listed. I’d be intrigued to see if there’s a connection, as I know exs make solid stuff.

I’ve had abit more back and forth from the seller too, confirming torque specs and they’ve been answered quickly. They’ve mentioned the cranks will be shipped out in the next week too. Will have to wait and see.

I’m wondering if this is an ‘early bird’ price. I’ve picked up plenty of seemingly too good to be true deals from there.

Same, still waiting!

Mine took about 10 days to ship, I did nag them a few times too. Eventually shipped but then wasn’t collect by the courier for another 7 days and then went to a consolidation warehouse. According to the tracking it’s now at the airport.

Will share if/when I receive it

These have just arrived! First impression, they look good to me, even more so for the £40 I paid.

Held off buying a rotor chainring until it arrived, so need to get that next before I can install and test.

Mine just arrived. Am I doing something wrong, or are the screws with the blue loctite impossible to screw in? Does anyone else have this issue?

If yours are anything like mine, they had an obscene amount of loctite over the whole bolt. I found scrapping the threads clean with a pick and then with applying some grease was enough to get them threading in perfectly.

Hi, what's the weight of these?
The photo attached makes it look like they weigh a ton.

I haven't had the chance to weight mine but a weight weenie post says 590g for the set without the spindle.

I'll be changing my bottom bracket soon so I'll try and weight mine and post back here.

I would not recommend. My pedal insert on the drive side became loose and tightening my pedal to even more than 50 Nm did not fix the problem. It started making noise yesterday after approximately 500 km. I am going back to a Rotor crank.

I really hate to hear that... I was really hoping for good responses, because there really isn't a choice for length-adjustable carbon cranks at an acceptable price

Did you happen to use this crankset with Shimano 12 speed chainrings?
Their spider doesn't allow (so they say) 12 speed chainrings and I'm thinking... what if I get an some other 8 hole spider from Aliexpres (Stone, Keos...) Then this crankarm could work with 12 speed chainrings?
Or did I miss something and misunderstand the matter🤷‍♂️

I'm still on 11 speed, but not sure why the spider wouldn't work.
my spider has 8 bolt interface to the crank arm + 110BCD 4 arm shimano-compatible chainrings.

i was previously using this 8-bolt direct mount oval 42T
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004471953264.html

then just recently upgraded to this 46T oval 4-bolt 110bcd + their spider

When I wrote to them they told me that their entire crankset sistem (their crankarm, spider and chainrings) works on 11 and 12 speed...but that their crankarm and their spider are not compatible with 12 speed 105 or Ultegra for example.
I don't quite get it either if the spider is 110x4 in both cases

Any long term review now ?

Anyone know an alternative to this mega carbon option or the aldhu carbon arms ?
