Title: Magene C606 Bike Computer
Post by: Avalius on January 24, 2025, 04:01:41 AM
Magene dropped a new firmware update today introducing Climbpro and a new dashboard.
This device was already decent but not i'm really considering it.

Any user experiences here?

I have a rant punctuated with slurs somewhere out there. Granted half of it was towards seller (tradeinn) but the C606 was/is still a piece of shit
The TLDR is that it's extremely frustrating because the hardware is basically perfect, it's fast and responsive, screen is the best I've used by lightyears, but the software isn't there at all. Very limited customization, awful map layer that you can't swap, and the android app is so buggy and bad it warrants the capital punishment for the devs imo.
I'm using the IGS630 as a daily driver but I still haven't sold my C606. I sometimes check if they update the firmware, which has pretty much never happened in 6 months. I used the C606 just last week for a 2 hour ride and it's in still in the same state.
My firmware version is v1.214, I don't know when the update introducing climbpro will drop to the public but I will try it once it drops
It can absolutely become an everything-else killer, but until they purge the dev team PLEASE avoid it.

I have been using mine for about 3 months and absolutely love it. I picked it up for about US$112 during 11.11 and it's a steal.

I find a lot of the negative reviews relate to the navigation capability which is definitely not on par with a Garmin so if that is important then stay away from this.

Dusted it off this week for the bimonthly chance at redemption because I just got a L508 radar (which I'm still unsure about too). I've done 4 rides, all between 1 and 2 hours:
-Might be just luck, but I found the android app to be much less buggy. Paired fast, synced fast, no timeouts. Just an issue syncing to strava but they're not really to blame because strava handles email changes very poorly. Still a nice surprise, the app works.

-Their "climbpro" is a joke. It first needed to be activated somewhere deep in the app. I imported a route from their inapp route planner, which is no komoot but it works on par with the builtin garmin/igpsport/wahoo route planners. I got climb alerts for ghost climbs that didn't exist eg. 400m@7% when the road was fairly flat 1-2% up or down, some climbs were mysteriously split in 2, eg. 0-30% of a consistent 6% climb, then later the last half of it when there was no flat section, climbs that started way too late when I was well into it, and some climbs that kept going when I was actually done climbing.
The "average grade remaining" is also pathetic. It will correctly identify 4km remaining and 250m remaining, but the calculation will be way off and fluctuating. It should be third grader math but it might say 3%, 14%, 6% etc. RNG. How can they fuck this up?

-With four connected sensors, auto brightness (fairly sunny week) and a route loaded, it drains ~8% per hour, but I had one 1h20 ride go from 58 to 19%! In similar conditions, my IGS630 drains 3 or 4% per hour max, despite being older and used a lot more often.

-I still think the hardware is flawless. It's crazy responsive, very readable. It's just the software that sucks.
If ALL you need to do is stare at data fields and the occasional turn by turn, it's great, but for the money I expect a lot more. I hope the next IGPSport binavi will be good

The bike computer doesn't support changing pages with di2 hood buttons  :(

A shame such a simple and useful feature isn't there

Oh, and I can confirm the ClimbPro feature gives me ghost climbs as well and sometimes ends a real climb right before the biggest hill of the segment. I don't find it too annoying tbh

Nevermind, looks like I can map functions from my Di2 shifters to functions on the bike computer. I'm going to try mapping a shifter button to change data screens

Quote
For Di2 users, you can custom the D-fly button settings to control the bike computer and other devices. For instance, light up the tail light or switch the bike computer page via buttons.

*This function needs to be set up via Shimano D-fly and Magene smart riding assistant.
*The following firmware updates will continually expand peripheral compatibility.

There is a new version of software - 1.706, they added some strava segments, 1000 km navigation and others. I will test it.

Any update on the testing after the last update?

I turned on the Strava segment toggle and did 200 miles this weekend. I didn't see any live Strava segment screens. However, I have noticed tweaked colors, and an improved climbing segment UI that overlays the climb data on top of the map so you can still see where you're going. Much appreciated. I used to need to switch back to the map after climbs started quite frequently so I wouldn't make a wrong turn.

Do you have the segments starred (and a strava subscription)? Those are 2 requirements for strava segments to show up on gps devices afaik

I do have a Strava subscription, but I don't have any segments starred. That must be it. I'll star a few of my favorites and give it a shot.

I can confirm that the Strava segment feature works! (you don’t need a paid Strava subscription to use it, unlike with some other cycling computers )

First, select your favorite segments on the planned route in Strava.

Then, on your cycling computer, go to settings / look for the segments section.

In the top-right corner, tap the sync icon to synchronize your selected segments.

You can have a maximum of 25 or 50 segments (I don’t recall the exact number at the moment - typing this from the office  ;D ). But it’s easy to add or remove favorite segments anytime.

I also really like the latest update - improved rerouting, live Strava segment ,better maps, and ClimbPro.  8)
I’ve only done one ride so far with this updated version , so that’s my first impression for now - we’ll see how it goes! 😉🤘

I also found taht the segment started during my non planned route today. To be fair its a segment on my usual commute but I looked down and it popped up on its own

So what's the verdict on this one? Did new updates finally made this thing usable ?

Lack of re-routing is still a major issue, I want to be able to zoom in and out of the map more to get my bearings, and I still haven't been able to get D-fly mapping to work to flip through my screens without taking my hands off the hoods. Those are my only issues with it at this point

Hi all,

I have a problem with the C606: smart notifications are not syncing between the Onelap Fit app and the C606. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Thanks.

don't know where to ask this question but hope its fine and someone has a clue...

the story is about Magene c406 pro, a couple of years old and now it happend for the third time that after I put it to charge and leave it overnight, it is dead in the morning, power button is not responding, connecting the charger also nothing. I then leave it for a few days "in the dark" and it suddenly starts to work again. I guess it is a battery issue, but can't really tell because I'm no electrician. I have already ordered a new BC (still in shipping) but I'd still like this one as a backup or for the second bike. When it works, it works just fine and the battery holds for 10 hours at least... Already looking for a battery replacement, but have no clue if it would help.

If anyone has a clue what is wrong with it, I'd be ver glad to hear it.

I’ve been using it for quite a while and I really like it. I do basic group rides sometimes with navigation, it works very well for everything I do. The screen is very clear and it enables me to set up the screens that I find useful when riding and I find it easy to switch between them using the touchscreen. I needed a new unit and did not want to spend that much money on the Garmin. I think the Magene makes perfect sense unless you have some very specific navigation requirements.

I've been using the IGPSport 630 for a while and it was actually pretty decent. Left it on the top of the car, forgot and drove off so I bought a Magene C606 to try out. So far I think the iGPSport is better and more user friendly but I haven't had enough time on the Magene yet. Also, does anyone have any issues connecting an LTwoo er9/erx to it? I cant seem to figure it out!

Actually yes, on my list ride the smart notification start popping out randomly, hope that the new firmware will improve and fix this issue

Badly at the moment they cut some feature when Geoid branded version is available. For example Magene C606 is very similar to Geoid cc700pro but this hasn't climb pro function

It seems like the pro will actually let you do workouts outside? My biggest gripe with some of the cheaper Chinese computers is you can’t load a workout file. Currently rocking the geoid cc600 got it last year when first getting into cycling and it’s worked flawless but looking to upgrade to a computer that allows me to do my workouts outside
