I'm looking for a replacement for my specialized recon shoes. They are wearing out. I don't want to spend 300 on shoes that I know I will destroy. Anything new/good/recommended?

I have been using Giro Republic shoes for a few years. I commute every day. It's road for 15 miles and 5 miles of off road. excellent for walking and work well for wide platform SPD pedals I have. I also used them for touring with no issues wearing them 10+ hours a day with a lot of walking. Somewhat like saddles shoes are personal - I have wide ish feet. For road shoes I have other brands for road shoes that fit wide as well ie Shimano and Bontrager.

I can recommend the Bont Riot G, very good shoe.
With the code CHARLESOUIMET10 you get 10% discount.

i use the Shimano Xc7, very comfy with Michelin rubber sole that helps when walking on the wet rocks

XC5 here. I use them on my gravel, MTB and road bikes.
If I had to buy new shoes now I would go for the Shimano SH-RX801. But I understand prices of Shimano shoes differ greatly worldwide. 150€ in EU.

I get whatever is on sale and buy 2. ;D

I've been riding the Adidas gravel shoes for some time now, currently on my second pair. They're comfy and can usually be had for a very good price with some searching. This latest pair was a bit under 60 USD from the Adidas eBay store.

maybe give Santic a check.
while i have not used their 'mtb' line(more like gravel), but the lockfree lineup apollo that i use seem to have similar upper.

RX-8 are great shoes and I can recommend them.
I also love my fizik X3 overcurve because they come in white and I'm a white shoe guy :)

I have the same adidas gravel shoes. I got mine during a BF sale for $40 USD. I bought 2 pairs. I swapped out the regular laces for quick pull laces. I plan to install a set of BOA-like straps and see how those work. The only thing I don't like are the tread nubs which tend to break off after awhile. I would prefer a different tread pattern that's more durable.

I've had these for a few months and been happy with them.

I found it hard to find off-road shoes on AliX that advertise as really stiff.

Which adidas/fiveten shoes do you mean? I actually use fivetens on flat pedal bikes a lot. They are good shoes. I didn't really think about them having more traditional xc/gravel shoes with cleats. Interesting idea.

If if you’re mainly looking for a shoe that feels good while riding, I can recommend the Shimano RX8. I had quite a few gravel shoes but I like this one best. It comes in a wide version which I find very comfy. It’s light. And the sole is super stiff which I love for its ride feel as it doesn’t feel less efficient than a good road shoe. BUT: They’re not super comfy to walk in. Also, there’s not a huge amount of rubber sole on the heel so I’d be worried to wear it out quickly when doing a lot of walking.
For my use case (touring / Audax events / bikepacking) they’re the best I ever had.
Oh, and they did take some wearing in for me. But once that’s over, they feel like a glove.
