Title: Can we migrate this forum to a modern forum? I'm tired of the broken pages.

Sorry to be off-topic.  Who is the admin?

These guys did it back in 2017, can we too?  https://forums.unraid.net/topic/54962-goodbye-smf-forum-migration-on-monday-2202017/

Sitar_Ned is the forum's administrator. You can reach out to them via PM or email.

I do support the idea. The software is really dated and things break a bit too often for my taste. Not sure how much capacity they have to actively maintain the forum and/or a migration.

It definitely feels dated and the forum has had an unusual amount of downtime recently, but in a way it makes me nostalgic of simpler times when not everything was centralized on the same apps :) At least it's not tapatalk  ::)
What I definitely do wish we had however would be a faster pace chatroom for quick questions and discussions that don't quite warrant "polluting" the forum

A chatbox would be spammed with people that aren't active here with the dumbest questions on where to buy counterfeit products  ::)
But it would be cool for all the rest :)

SMF is very nice. Maybe just update to the newest version to avoid borken pages? I like it here.

Broken pages suck indeed. Other features are still alright. Only mobile use is suboptimal.

Nevertheless - big thanks to admin  ;) :)

Honestly, not much capacity at all. It's just me and I am in no way a web developer or webmaster. Just a simpleton Arkansas mountain biker that somehow figured out how to get this forum up 10 years ago.

I know the broken pages are annoying... and I am sorry about that... I do try to fix them immediately when they pop up so please do let me know.. I really appreciate it. I do have plans to upgrade to the latest SMF version to fix little issues like that but I'm sorry to disappoint anyone but there are no plans to "modernize" the forum in any way. No desire to have some modern mobile-friendly, super slick, dark mode interface. Chinertown will remain old-school looking with zero ads and zero optimizations for Google search. My main goal going forward is to keep AI out of the forum as much as possible. That's just my jam but I do understand if it isn't for everyone.

That said, I am certainly open and interested to hear everyone's input/advice/ideas and really appreciate it.

I like this forum format so much better than any of the "canned format" Verticalscope owned/branded forum sites.   No advertising placed in every nook and cranny of the screen.  its nice to have a grass-roots forum that is not about making the greedy rich corporations richer.

I have become used to this forum and how it operates, and dislike seeing changes-for-change sake, claiming to make things better.   If the search function in the site doesn't find what I am searching for, I can usually search with my browser search engine and find what I want to find there and navigate back to Chinertown.

Yeah, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression - this forum is awesome and I'm thankful that it's here and free and no ads and all that!  My original post was mostly about the broken pages - good to know I can reach out to you when it happens.

If you're interested, I could maybe spare some time to see if I could safely upgrade it to a later version of the same forum with minimal risk - though it's always scary trusting an internet stranger/volunteer.  Presumably the fresh one would have fewer bugs/broken pages but with the same feel but would want to confirm that too.

I meam I'm new here (his is my first post), but it would be great if there was thread page navigation, jump to latest post when entering threads and at a push a better search function.  But look and feel of the forum (as an oldie) is all good by me...  8)

No worries... didn't take it in any kind of negative way at all. Was just answering your question. All good.

And thanks for the offer, I am currently working with someone else but will keep that offer in mind.

Welcome to the forum.

You can jump to the latest post in the thread by clicking the little orange "new" button next to the thread title.

Is there anything we can do about image sizes, i.e. automatically reduce large images to a size more managable for the browser?

Not only does it take a while to load (and storage space) they also are generally too large to view sufficiently without nagivation (which kinda defeats the object).

Maybe with a mod like this Resize Images To Fit Screen by slinouille (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=1769) or Automatic Attachment Rotation (and Resize) by dougiefresh (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=4087)

I just love this forum's design the way it is. It takes me back when the internet is a much better place 15-20 years ago. I was also a forum moderator for one of the Philippines' biggest forums so this site's design is so much better for a mid 30s like me. Well that's just me and thank you @Sitar_Ned for building this forum up! This is has been wonderful for bike building and connecting with cheap but solid frames!

I'm mid 40's so not sure what that has to do with much.  15-20 years ago you didn't have phones taking hi-res photos, internet speeds able to quickly upload those images and cheap high capacity storage to store them...

Plus I think design and function are 2 separate things imo, you're not changing the design by limiting the image size of attachments.

I don't know tech but can something be done about aliexpress links? An option to filter links and leave us with just "clean" ones with no affiliate codes or changing the language? I have to open most links in a private tab to avoid last hit leeching and having my aliexpress change to a random language

Don't know about the limits of the platform this forum is built on, but that's not generally a difficult thing to do.

I like your vision, just keep this forum the way it is! I believe most of us are happy as long as there are no broken pages and the connection is fast.

Well it's been about 2 months since we migrated to a new server and upgraded the SMF version and there have been zero broken pages since so I think it's safe to say that issue is fixed. Great success.

I agree about the image upload issue. Could definitely be improved and I will look into various options.

Thanks for all the feedback positive and negative. To those that post or message me to say this forum has helped them in some way.. honestly, thank you so much for that. It is a genuine source of positivity for me to hear these things.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Thanks for all you do!
I remember at times I used to get prompted to choose a file size when uploading a pic. That was helpful to avoid the screen filling size pics.

Any easy way to add a “member since” line under the avatars? The only other forum I frequent (ih8mud.com) has it and it’s cool to see how long folks have been hanging around.

I'm just adding my voice to the chorus...

I greatly appreciate this forum AND its style and format. I'm none too big a fan of some of the more sleek forum styles out there and I find them amusing, at best, and confusing and needlessly complicated, at worst. This style is simple, clean, and - above all else - functional. Keep up the great work!

Exactly, this is how a forum should be, simple :)

It's the first time I see this kind of forum but as a normal user it look close to phpBB forums.
The only thing I hate is the picture stuff but I'm sure this was updated.
I'm pretty sure you can upgrade easily to version 2.1x, just make sure to backup/export the current database (I'm pretty sure you have this option in the administration panel ;))

working on a simple stylesheet to add mobile scaling to the site. should be copy and paste-able into a Safari extension like Makeover on iOS. i'm sure there's a way to add it to android too. could eventually just be added to the site if there's demand

I agree that the site works fine except for mobile. It's pretty annoying to have to pinch and zoom all the time
