Good morning community,
I am currently thinking of upgrading my 2.000g aluminium wheelset to a lighter carbon wheelset for my Canyon Grizl. This would be also my first step to builing my first own bike, as I would like to use this for my bike build at a later stage. However, I am a bit lost within the jungle of carbon wheelsets. I am looking for something with good built quality, fair prices, some kind of good service in case it's needed. I have heard many recommending Peter from XMC here. On Aliexpress there are so many alternatives as well... I might need some kind of guidance/help :)
What I think I am looking for:
- Carbon wheelset
- 40-50mm height
- 24-26mm inner width (I will be riding 40-50mm tyres)
- Aluminium spokes
- Shimano 1x11 GRX fitting
- Shipping to Germany
If it's not that much of a difference to upgrade the wheels, please let me know as well ;)
Thank you in advance,
Frederik

Well Freddy, difficult to answer. I would go with Peter. His wheels are stellar. Regaring the width you can ask him, he knows what rims you need. Given your name I think you live in or near Hamburg. As I recall there might be soms hills, but nothing crazy so you could take some higher rims (that are more heavy, but more aero). Personally I think 35-40mm is high enough for gravel to look cool, but still be sensible. 50mm (or more) only looks good if you're really fast, otherwise I'd be embarased to ride them :D

I am running the D50CU-36, so 50 mm height, 36 mm OD and 28 mm ID on my gravel

I have exactly the same D50CU-36 rims on my gravel bike and absolutely love them, have had them for 8 months now - here is a pic:

The 'Chameleon Blue' that's offered on their AliExpress listings. I went with a colour they offered by default as I have absolutely zero trust in these sellers to get anything more complex right (and fair enough - it's all very thin margin stuff). Looks great though.

I was actually asking about the wheels, as they look nice and black opposed to greyish looks of some us finishes:)

Oh sorry! Just UD matte - it's just the lighting that makes it look a bit different. I prefer the paintless kinda satin look on my FarSports wheels.

I recently bought a set of these from Carbonal
https://carbonal.net/en-gb/collections/carbon-road-bike-wheels/products/700c-gravel-bike-dt-swiss-240-hub-29mm-internal-clincher-wheels?variant=45290709647514
I've only ridden them a few times including a longish gravel ride in the a lake district but my initial impressions are very positive both with the wheels and the service from Carbonal. They were well packed too
I really like the paintless finish of the 6k weave
I'm pretty sure they will do custom build if you want different hubs etc
