Title: Is sub-1000g DYI wheelset possible?

I wanna build a sub-1000g climbing wheelset.  Just checked out XMCS rims:  360g per rim of the lowest depth (36mm), 24 holes.  I believe I can talk to to Peter to customize them to 20 holes.  GoldiX hubs R180SL: 250g per set
Carbon spokes: 40 total, 3g per spoke, so 120g

With this configuration, components are easily sourced but total weight is over 1000g already.

How do they do it?

These are my favorite 280 gram carbon rims sold on Aliexpress.  My first pair has been in service on my Bikepacking rig for 3 years without any issues. I have 3 other wheels I built that are in service on 2 bikes I ride less.

You might also consider finding old school DT Revolution or Aerolite spokes.  Otherwise you will have to use Berd Spokes.

IMHO DSF Carbon offers the biggest bang for the buck ATM. I've talked to them and they respond very fast.
I have put my sub 1,000 grams Wheelset on a hold, but plan to get back to it in a bit.

Thanks guys for your input. Looks like DFS is a good supplier for this project.  @CycOps, what is the estimated cost of your sub 1000g wheelset?

How do they do it?


Why build when you can buy unless the hubs are cheap
330/350g rims  50mm
280g for say 36mm

3.1mm carbon spokes and nipples 2.1g
Hubs now maybe 215g for carbon 20/2”
Steel spoke hub 240g

And the rims will have the spokes holes drilled for the hub geometry as well
Lightest steel spoke Alpina with Nipples 4g
