Hey everyone! I wanted to share the results of a weight optimization project focused on finding the absolute structural limit of a factory raw carbon Trifox SDY20 frame.
The goal was to strip away every single non-structural gram to create a world-class Weight Weenie baseline.
The Shaving Process:
Even though the frame arrived from the factory as a "raw carbon" model, it still carried a substantial clear coat, primer traces, and various masking layers. Out of the box, it weighed 863g with all the factory finishing.
To safely remove this weight without compromising the structural epoxy matrix, I used a razor blade for mechanical scraping, followed by meticulous hand-sanding with very fine grit paper.
The final weight of the bare carbon structure was verified using two different types of scales: 780g (Size M).
To seal and protect the bare carbon fibers from UV and moisture without adding the weight penalty of a traditional clear coat, I applied 2 coats of Muc-Off Ceramic Protection kit (which adds virtually zero weight). The final two scale photos show the frame with the ceramic coating already applied.
