Re: take chance on $15 NECO
I have had probably 6 or 7 NECO headsets over the years. One time I developed some creaking and clicking, and when I pulled the fork, the lower bearing had come apart. Come to find out the bearing only had about half the balls it was supposed to have. But this was an isolated incident. All the other neco headsets Ive had have been flawless.

VB-R-168 Build- A sceptic's experience
Hello all. I am located in USA so all of the links below may not work for you. This is just an overview of my experience and what I found while building the new bike. I purchased a VB-R-168 frame, integrated bars, VB-60 carbon wheels, and the rest of the components needed to make it a rolling machine  . Before I start, I wanted to say I was very sceptical of this purchase and worried that it would not turn out as good as it did. Chris from VB is very helpful and responsive. I have read of negative experiences relating to VB, but mine was thankfully a pleasant one. The wheels took longer because I requested 350 straight pull hubs. Everything went together nicely (I definitely recommend using carbon paste and torque wrench). Getting the cables through the frame and bars was reasonably difficult, but not too bad. The bike is all together and I have a few rides under my belt. Great bike, stiff, fast. Definitely a great bike for the price. I hate when my bikes are noisy from cable rattle, etc... so I made sure I took all necessary precautions when building this one. The end result is pretty great considering the price point. The not so great- The seat post has slipped on me (it may not do this if you are smaller. I am 220 lbs-100 kg). I found adding more carbon paste and upping the torque setting slightly definitely helps. The wheels took a bit longer due to covid and my customizations which isn't the end of the world. The aero bars may be too aero for some. I purchased the VB separate stem and bar combo to replace the integrated bars- that hasn't arrived yet. I left the steerer tube slightly long to add spacers later on. I have added some pictures of the bike fully built. Feel free to ask any questions if you have. Thanks for reading/viewing. Re: Before the ride...
Most of my rides are short lunchtime rides from my house, so I need to be able to go quickly. I have road and mountain supplies in my Camelbak so I don't have to move anything around based on what I'm going to ride. My riding time is limited, but it's easier to find 15 to 30 min in the evening for maintenance, so I make sure everything is ready to go ahead of time.

I have been on open mold frames exclusively for about 6 yrs now. My fat bike, MTB, road and gravel all are open mold. I have only come across a few other riders on them. they are more popular in the fat bike world but still not common. I do agree that it is crazy how much people spend on bikes just to have that name brand. I run exclusively shimano drivetrains just because when I started, sense didn't exist and I had to pick one for continuity of repair parts and processes. the ability to have a top spec drivetrain on an open mold frame gives me a riding experience on par or above most riders at a fraction of the cost. I would rather have multiple bikes tailored for a specific riding type then one uber expensive bike that I have to use for everything. I probably spend the same amount of $$ on bikes but I have a whole fleet.

I live in Belgium, and although I rarely see an unbranded open mould frame, I do see a lot of rebranded ones. Plenty of smaller brands rely on open moulds. I've even seen branded open mould frames raced in women's World Tour. March 10, 2023, 04:09:57 PM |

Sidebike carbon. These purchased in 2020 for $130AUD . Can find them currently on Ali . Over 20,000 KM , as good as new. Chuck the inners and get some decent ones with arch support

From that pick 3 deals or choice page I have bought numerous $2 bar tapes, especially the ones made by Racework - they are superb. I was expecting them to go bad within a couple of months and since they are so cheap I was going to change them frequently but they held up so well and I am sitting on a bunch of brand new tapes in various colors  . The last relatively expensive bar tape that I bought was a Shimano Pro for $20 ish. Days of buying Fizik or anything are long gone. These $2 bars are as good. The only thing they lack is the finishing tape that's almost worthless. I just use black electric tape to finish the tape.Edit - Riderace not Racework. February 10, 2024, 10:44:00 AM |

I'm a big fan of Serfas cork bar tape. It's a really cushy/stretchy material that's easy to contour on drop bars especially around the shifters. Also if you do any adjustments or swap bars out, the adhesive doesn't really tear or leave marks on the bar tape, so it's easy to re-apply.
