Re: Velobuild VB-R-177 Rebuilt my VB-177 frameset, as it's off to a new home. My buddy opted for 105 Di2 12-Speed and a set of 1st-gen Hyper 65s. Shifting with 105 feels identical to Ultegra Di2 12sp and the wheels make for a speedy ride dynamically. FSA no69 headset system is the way to go.

After building this bike up and riding it, I'm now quite curious to check out the VB-268. I hoping the 268 takes all the good from the 177 and pairs it with the aesthetics and geometry of the 168. Yes I said I was finished with reviewing $500 frames but...

Winspace C5 - Build & Thoughts I have had a Winspace C5 for 3 weeks (700km) now and I thought some of you might be interested in a build log and some of my thoughts.
My previous bike was a Canyon Endurace CF SL8 that developed a crack in the chainstay. I really liked the bike, but I wanted something with a more aggressive geometry.
I'm quite lightweight (62kg) so my experience might not be the same as a heavier person (or more powerful). I like long and climby rides.

These were some of the criteria I had for the frame:
- Preferably T47 or BSA
- Internal cable routing without a D-shaped fork
- Less aggressive than a full-on race bike, more aggressive than my Canyon
- Good/proven quality
- Has to look good
- Separate stem/handlebar
- 32mm tyre clearance


For me, the Winspace Agile was a bit too aggressive, and I didn't see much advantage in the slightly lighter frame. Also, the geo is more aggressive, so I would need more spacers (who doesn't like slammed stems).
The C5 has a BB86 bottom bracket; I'd prefer something threaded, but you can't always get what you want. I also liked the FSA headset; this way I could run the stem and handlebars I wanted.
Because I will be traveling with the frame, I didn't want a one-piece bar and stem. I saw Mapdec recommend the Deda Superbox system, which is compatible with the FSA 1.5-inch steerer system.
FSA uses bearings with a 45x36 angle (supplied with the frame), while the Deda system uses bearings with a 45x45 angle. Luckily, Deda supplies a compression ring that is also compatible with the FSA bearings, so I didn't need to change the bearings.

The frame is supplied with a Token TK299 expander plug, and this is probably a fine expander. But I couldn't get all the play out of the headset. I torqued the Token expander to 4 nm, and there was some play in the headset. I tried a Deda 70 mm expander, and now the play was gone. I think I cut the carbon steerer slightly too long for the Token to get the play out; the minimum distance (between the stem and carbon steerer) for the Token is less than for the Deda, it seems.

- Goodyear F1R 32 mm tyres (came from the Canyon)

- Favero Assioma MX-2 pedals
- CYCEARTH 1.5M/Pack 1.5M Internal Housing Foam Shock Absorber 6mm Bike Hose Shift/Brake/Hydraulic Hose (very cheap, works very well)

The bike weighs 8.4kg with garmin mount, bell, bottle cages and pedals (which are SPD so heavy). This obviously isn't a weight weenie build but for me the weight isn't an issue. I will be looking to upgrade some components in the future to get the weight down (cassette, wheels, cranks).
Building the bike was super easy. I watched Klein Concept's build of the Agile, and you can basically apply everything to the C5. Routing the cables was very easy. The headset bearings and bottom bracket installed easily, the surfaces were smooth. The brake mounts looked like they were taped off properly before painting, i have no issues with brake rub.

Some of my thoughts:

- Electronic shifting is amazing. My mechanical Ultegra worked extremely well, but electronic is something else.
- The Canyon comes with a VCLS flexible seatpost and is very comfortable. I was doubtful that the Winspace would be as comfortable. The Winspace is noticeably stiffer, but it isn't uncomfortable at all. I much prefer the ride feel of the Winspace; it is much more direct, and the power is transferred way more directly. This is especially noticeable when pedaling out of the saddle.

Overall, I'm super happy with the bike. The Canyon feels very flexy compared to it. The comfort is not an issue at all (probably because of the 32 mm tyres). Taking corners and descending is really fun with this bike; it feels like it wants to go fast, while I had to coax the Canyon into going faster.

Re: Road carbon wheels/rims, 23mm inner width Yoeleo is currently having a Black Friday sale on both their wheels and frames.

My set of C60 DB PRO wheels came in real world weight of 1373g with steel spokes. Rim specs are 23mm internal 32mm external. I imagine the C50 version will be around 1330-1350g. Yoeleo said these can pull double duty for gravel as well.

Well before I was provided any promo code from Yoeleo, I had already done a video on these wheels months ago. And I've concluded this new latest line of DB Pro wheels will make it into my Top 5 favorite (ready to ship) wheels. The specs to weight to price ratio are pretty compelling. Of course it's very tough to compete with OEM suppliers on price if you're willing to wait a few weeks for fulfillment.

I have schwalbe pro one 30mm on 26mm internal rims. They measure 33mm. Fork is super wide can probably take 40mm, same as seatstays. Chainstays are the narrowest point but there's still a bit of room. I think 35 should fit.

Re: Speeder Cycling SC-R55D Received my SC-R55D a few days ago. Almost 2 months from the order to receiving it at my door. Shipping was only a few days (Fedex International Priority).

Size 535 (more like a 56-58cm).

This is my first carbon bike, I'm not sure what's normal and what isn't.

NOTE I specifically requested it to be unpainted. So, naturally it looks rougher than one you might receive with the standard matte clear coat. Don't judge it too much based on the unfinished appearance. I'll disassemble and paint it in the spring.

BB Shell
I measured the BB with a bore gauge, 6 measurements per side and averaged.
DS: 40.97mm
NDS: 41.02mm
Could be better, could be (far) worse, I think the ideal is like 40.98mm-41.00mm.
DS should be fine, NDS I might use a bit of Loctite 641 for good measure, but will see how it feels first.

Notes/Issues
  • It was packed well
  • Carbon looks pretty good on the inside. I assume EPS molded. No large wrinkles
  • Brake mounts look good
  • Seatpost slides into the frame easily, certainly not too tight, perhaps could be a bit more snug if anything
  • Geometry of the frame seems accurate. The fork length however is ~4mm longer than stated (measures in at 374mm)
  • Headset bearing seats look good
  • Seems to be compatible with mechanical shifting? There's an exit hole behind the ST (in addition to the FD Di2 wire exit hole)
  • The seatpost wedge clamp is definitely better finished than the one shown in Peak Torque's Tavelo Arow review (sides are nicely rounded), but could probably still use a couple minutes of sanding to make the top edge smoother where it contacts the post.
  • :( The pocket that the clamp sits in is angled, so it falls right into the seat tube when removing the seatpost. And it's not easy to hold it in place with your finger either, again due to the angle on the bottom.
  • :( The rubber cover for the seatpost clamp touches the grub screw in the clamp which prevents it from sitting flat on the top tube. Also, it fits kinda loose, not sure if that's common, but I assume it will jump around a bit on rough roads, or even in the wind.
  • :( HT/headset/fork vertical gap is about 1mm on both the top and bottom, which is noticeable from the front and sides. Weatherproofing is poor. Not sure how much of the gap is due to the bearing inset vs. the non-FSA ACR top cover. Might be better with a real FSA cover?
  • Lower headset bearing sits kinda high on the bearing seat. But probably fine.
  • Cable routing -- there's a guide tube in the NDS chainstay going to the rear brake. And the fork of course. But I don't see anything for the rear derailleur. And it didn't come with a foam sheath to prevent rattling in the DT.
  • The DT water bottle could have been placed lower for aero I think. There's a few cm between the two.
  • :( The threads in the fork dropout are kinda rough, one of the first threads is clearly a bit damaged, and there seems to be some excess resin that made its way to the bottom of the threads. I tried threading in a 1.5 pitch thru-axle and it felt quite rough. Ordered a rethreading tap to chase the threads, let's see if that works.
  • The additional zero-setback seatpost I purchased has a 2-bolt clamp rather than the 1-bolt Ritchey-style clamp on the setback post. So anyone worried about the 1-bolt clamp slipping might consider the zero-setback seatpost, if your fit allows it.
  • Tire clearance -- fork can fit some larger tires for sure. Width between the fork legs is around 50mm, not sure about radial clearance. Wouldn't be surprised if it could fit a 38-40mm tire leaving 5mm around. On the frame, width between the chainstays is ~40mm, so personally I wouldn't use anything wider than 32mm actual.
  • Rear flat mount bosses are 20.8mm tall, for those looking to buy the correct length bolts.
  • Wish I had thought to order an extra seatpost clamp in case I lose it.

Aero
Random dimensions for unscientific aero weenie comparisons:
  • Seatpost is ~21.8 x 33.4mm. Wider than supersix (15mm)/sl8/etc
  • Fork legs are ~16.5 x 40mm in the middle. Slightly narrower than supersix
  • DT is 43 x 63mm in the middle. Narrower than supersix
  • HT is 45 x 73mm in the middle

As I might've mentioned earlier, I'm doing a weird setup with a +17 deg stem to approximate the simplon/cervelo/bianchi/colnago thing and to get enough stack for my tall self. Then I'll design a fairing that encloses the stem/spacers/cables to make it sleeker and more aero. Hoping to finish it up by mid-January and have it ready for spring racing.

1) Communication

The messages were by mail only. Sometimes Justin answered within few hours but sometimes It was two or three days. I think that He is very busy. It is less easy to message him than some others sellers who use WhatsApp. However He answered to everything.

2) Production/shipping time

Production time : 27 days
Shipping time : 17 days

The package was well protected but a little damaged. It was not the fault of Speeder Cycling but the fault of the shipping company. There was a little problem with the box but Justin solved the problem quickly. So +1 for his help.

3) Quality of the frame

Inside was so smooth. The paint and clearcoat look very nice. Calipers were faced, no excess painting, same for the BB. Perfect bearing seats. It looks like a very high quality frame. To be honest, I was impress by the quality.

4) Accessories

Spacers (FSA like) are also nice. There is a Di2 battery holder which is nice.

5) Handlebar

I chose the 370 mm handlebar which is on their SC-R55D website. This handlebar is very stiff and inspires trust, no flex even during sprinting.

6) Build

Everything was perfect. I aligned the break caliper in less than 5 minutes (for both). I installed the BB86 pressfit without any problem (thanks to @Serge for the advice of use Liqui Moly Grease). It seems that the handlebar can handle mechanic groupset.


7) Ride

I installed the Ultegra Di2 groupset with the Tagoola Wheels. I won't make a review of the Ultegra because everybody know it :D. For a review of the wheels (I really like them), you can check the other topic.
The frame develop confidence. It is fast and confortable. My longest ride is only 60 km but I can not wait to make longer rides.
Very stable above 60 km/h, I don't have any problem to climb. When I sprint (and thanks to the combo frame / Tagoola wheels / Ultegra) at 1000 W or a little more, there is no disc rubbing.

8) Conclusion

I strongly recommand Speeder Cycling for the quality of the frame. You will not be disappointed. The frame has nothing to envy of a Giant Propel for exemple.

It is not written Speciali*ed or Fac*or on the frame but It will be as fast or faster :).

Re: ICAN FL1 Here's my FL1 aka the Pikarello. I designed some decals, picked the paint colour and ICAN took care of the rest. They sent design mockups and numerous photos throughout the process regarding the paint colour, sizing and position of the decals and followed up when I forgot to reply to their emails. Very happy with the service.

Painted 52cm frame weighed 875 grams. Build quality according to my untrained eye is well above the Yoeleo R12 I'm coming from which had many issues I was never happy with. Internal photos - see for yourself. I appreciated the faced brake mounts. I have done several hundred kms on it so far and it's a ripper of a frame. Stiff yet comfortable, I've smashed plenty of Strava PBs so far.

No problems with the T47 BB and the Magene PES P505 crankset.

Re: Speeder Cycling SC-R55D Since I have a little over 2,000 km on the bike, I thought I’d do a short update.

I'm a little conflicted about the bike, but it has nothing to do with any problems with the bike itself—rather, it's about the bike it's intended to replace.
I built it to replace my Rose Reveal endurance bike, as I wanted something that looked faster and cooler so I could show off my race rig in front of my mates on a coffee ride and try a more aggressive position. Since I don’t race, actual performance and aerodynamics make little difference to me. I was mostly going for looks, weight, and fit.

The bike is awesome. Frame quality is really good—it's stiff, and it’s the lightest bike I’ve ever owned (currently 7.3 kg ready to ride, with pedals and Garmin mount, in the largest size). So far, so good.

The cracks are starting to show, however, when I switch back to my old bike for some rides. After riding exclusively on the Speeder for a few months, it's instantly clear how much better the Rose is—at least for me.
Comfort is just a night-and-day difference. I wouldn’t say the Speeder is necessarily uncomfortable—I'm pretty happy with my position (even though I still struggle with saddle choice)—but my old bike is just on another level.
I don’t usually notice things like “compliance” or “rolling resistance,” but the Rose just floats over rough surfaces in comparison. I have the same tires set up tubeless on both, at the same pressure. I also used the same saddle. So the difference really comes down to frame and seatpost compliance.
Frankly, the Rose has a gimmicky, super-flexible seatpost which—until now—I thought didn’t make much difference. But the front-end comfort is also superior on the Rose, so it's not just the seatpost.

I initially planned to sell my endurance bike as soon as the new build was finished...
But now I have to keep both bikes  ;D
