Hey everyone, relatively new to this forum. I fell down this rabbit hole because I wanted a TT bike, but the off-the-shelf offerings from western brands seemed to be pretty poor value (and maybe more importantly unaffordable...). Having the ability to customize the paint to my liking was also a big deciding factor for me. I was mainly between the ICAN TT-017 and the VeloBuild TT-023, but I ultimately chose the TT-017 simply because I preferred its looks. The TT-017's baseplate will be a problem to solve at a later date. This will be my first time building a bicycle (or doing any kind of work on a bicycle really) so hopefully it goes with as few hiccups as possible.



Order Process

I sent an inquiry via ICAN's website on around December 11 and Sherry replied on the 12th with a quote of $950USD for the frame and $169USD for UPS shipping to Canada. I actually used AI to create a mockup of the paint scheme I wanted along with some other sample photos of the type of metallic green I wanted:



She then provided me some paint swatches which I signed off on, and the paint customization was $85USD. I was a little nervous about how the lime green highlight on the front forks would turn out since I wanted the top line to be parallel to the ground like in the AI render I sent her. I wondered how much I should attempt to micro-manage the specifics of the paint job, but in the end I figured with the language barrier it might just cause more confusion so I simply went with the flow. I fully understood I was pursuing a budget option. On December 16 she sent me this mockup from their paint department which I signed off on and promptly sent a payment of $1261USD via PayPal (including a $57USD PayPal fee).



Sherry informed me at the time of payment that they had one Large frame in stock at their warehouse so it would only be 7 business days for paint and I would not have to wait for a frame to be produced. On January 2, Sherry sent me photos of my painted frame at their warehouse and that it would be shipped that day.




On January 7 I received the frame. I was on the hook for $64CAD (~$46USD) for duties, taxes, and brokerage fees which I didn't consider to be too unreasonable. Overall I found the ordering process from ICAN to be smooth and straightforward.

The Frame

My first impression of the frame is that it looks very nice. Again, I don't have a lot of experience with building bikes, but my road bike is a 2019 Cervélo S5 so I have some sense of what a premium carbon frame should be like (ironically some interesting design choices by Cervélo have me questioning the extent to which the S5 can be considered a premium frame). The metallic paint looks absolutely beautiful.




Now, onto the fork paint that I was a little nervous about. Essentially exactly as I'd feared, the line was not quite parallel to the ground. It's pretty easy to see that they simply used used straight masking tape along the curved surface of the fork which caused some distortion, as well as a chevron-shaped join where the masking tape overlapped at the leading edge of the fork. There was definitely a lack of attention to detail in this area as I'd feared, however again I will not nitpick too hard since I actively decided not to over-communicate my specifications. You get what you pay for. Had I made my requirements clear, I would be disappointed.




A nice detail of the fork is that it has an asymmetric front profile to shield the front brake caliper.


In terms of facings, the edges of the paint were quite thick and noticeably raised around the BB threads and the brake mounts.





I'm particularly concerned about the rear brake mounts. I don't have any experience with this so I don't know when it becomes an issue that requires facing to deal with. Not only does the paint create a raised edge that rises above the mounting surfaces, I'm also pretty sure that the mounting surfaces are not flush with each other? Did anybody here have any issues with this or know if this is cause for concern?



Build Info

I've been gathering the rest of my components over the course of the last 2 months, through a combination of classifieds and retailers. Got lucky on a few holiday sales deals too. I, like many people, am doing a SRAM 1x build for simplicity (i.e. not having to pay for a front derailleur... the aero is a bonus) as I will only be racing on flat land anyway.

The wheelsets are obviously still outstanding, as well cassette, tires, saddle, etc. I'll probably be getting a deep front wheel and disc wheel off of Aliexpress. I will figure out aero extensions later since it's only indoor riding here for the next few months anyways.

Overall very excited for everything to come together (hopefully).

With the issue you mentioned, the paint has not been cleaned which is poor QA. Mine was cleaned or there was no overspray like yours and they were parallel. I would tell ICAN but I doubt anything will come of it.
You could take it to a good bike shop to be faced and cleaned to do a professional job or carefully remove the paint.
Hopefully they are straight and true and the paint is causing the issue.

I also noticed ICAN have removed the TT017 from their website. I wonder why they have done this.

The paint on this bike seems pretty thick, maybe too thick. The seatpost tolerance is super super tight, to the point where the paint on the frame around the seatpost opening is chipping from the seatpost being rammed through. Also did anyone cut their seatpost down?
The seatpost seems pretty long, I was intending to cut it down after I assembled it but never got round to it.
There were no issues getting the seatpost in on the frame I had.
Did you have any issues mounting your brakes?

Re: ICAN TT017 TT Bike Build As per above post I managed to source the correct BB and now have completely built up my TT017 and given a few good test rides. Specs are as follows:
•   Size large TT017
•   Groupset: Ltwoo ERX TT
•   Brake calipers: Wheeltop (supplied Ltwoo were problematic – see below)
•   Rotors: dura ace (160/140mm F/R)
•   Saddle: Adamo copy
•   Chain: 12 speed dura ace (waxed)
•   Cassette: Sunshine 12 speed 11-34
•   Front chainring: 56t narrow wide
•   Power meter: Xcadey
•   Pedals: dura ace SPD-SL
•   Cranks: Rocks bros DUB 165mm
•   BB: Senicx T47 DUB ceramic external bearings
•   Rear wheel: Elite Velo disc (TPU tube)
•   Front wheel: Cannondale Hollowgram Knot 64 (tubeless)
•   Tires: Continental GP5000 S-TR (25/30c F/R).
•   Weight: 9.3kg.

Observations/notes
•   Fittings like bottle cage bolt and front mech hanger are branded Quickpro. Am guessing ICAN manufacture the TT One for Quickpro using a higher modulus carbon.
•   Since it came from the same factory, I purchased Quickpro decals just so I can flex on this bike with my friends. Much like Cannondale hi-mod frames, in my mind this is just a lower modulus TT One.
•   Paint quality was great, can’t see any imperfections with my eyes.
•   Ltwoo battery could not fit in seatpost or downtube, so I wrapped it in thin foam and wedged it down seat tube – it doesn’t rattle but will be fun to get out.
•   Cutting steerer tube to correct length was tricky. I erred on the side of caution and ended up cutting it one or two milometers too long (only realised after routing cables through). As a result it now pushes the plastic cover up so that its not flush with top tube (not a big deal). Think someone else in thread also mentioned this but would advise anyone ordering this frame to ask ICAN to cut it to correct length.
•   BB installation was problematic. I have a T47 16 notch 52mm tool however with the external bearings it was too shallow to fit over the bearings and reach the BB notches. Had to take to LBS who charged me $AUD65 for a 5 minutes job :o. Have now ordered correct tool off aliexpress for like $10.
•   It is heavy at 9.3kg but am not planning to do any hilly TTs. If I take out disc rear (that weighs 1200 grams) and use spoked carbon rear wheel I can get weight down significantly.
•   First time using Ltwoo electronic and am quite impressed. Bit of a learning curve to set up but the app (and shift indexing) is way easier to use than Wheeltop. I have noted elsewhere on Chinertown water ingress issues so I will put heat shrink over rear mech connector. Shifting speed is great, probably not as fast or accurate as 12 speed Di2, maybe down the line I will put a Ultegra 11-34 cassette on it and that will make shifting even better.
•   Ltwoo brake caliper with 160mm adaptor would not fit in front fork recessed brake mount. Replaced with spare wheeltop caliper.
•   Rear Ltwoo brake caliper had a sticky piston out of the box. First thought it was uneven brake mounting surface, but just replaced with the other spare wheeltop caliper. No brake rub at all now.
•   Bleeding brakes is really easy on TT brake levers without having to stretch rubber hoods out of the way.
•   Since I’m not running front mech, to charge the battery I will have to unplug rear mech, plug in front mech and then plug that into USB-C charger. No big deal.
•   Haven’t added up total cost, but without wheels/tires/rotors am guessing this cost me less than $AUD4000, which is a bargain considering a Giant TT frameset alone is around $6000.
•   Will add a front chainring guide soon for peace of mind.

I’ve done three decent rides on it and am slowly dialling in my fit. I sit in UCI height category 2 (180-189cm) so have set up extension reach to comply. Am now looking at the Winow ARB02 extensions (which I’ve been told by Winow will fit to the existing adaptor plate). Am still figuring out which size to order so that they don’t exceed my category limit (830mm from centre of BB to tip of extension). If anyone has any experience with this and knows what size ARB02 I should get please let me know.

Note picture shows 140mm SRAM rotors F/R before I changed to DA, chain has been cut (was initially too long), and front mech cable sticking out has been removed.
