Component Deals & Selection / Niu Ju Computer Mounts
« on: October 12, 2023, 10:30:25 PM »
Hey all, I wanted to share a product I recently purchased. I have heard of these mounts and that they had potentially been whitelabeled under a different brand. It took a lot of searching to find these, and I ended up at the TorqueNiuJu Bike store on Taobao, a place i had heard mentioned on other forum. I dont know if thats true that others resell these mounts.

I cant yet vouch for the durability of the mount, but i don’t foresee any issues. What I can say is that these mounts are very, very impressive in terms of the machining. Not quite K Edge quality, as looking really carefully I found a spot where the CNC was either stopped to cool down of was repositioned before the pass was complete, but its a minor thing.

They are not cheap (~$25 or 188 RMB + International shipping if you arent in China) and can only be found on Taobao. However, for the quality of the machining these are a very good value.

I went through the trouble of purchasing it directly and using Taobao’s international shipping service, but using a forwarder like Superbuy is probably the way to go for most people, though I have never used that specific service.

Keep in mind these are stem specific. The one I bought is 24mm spacing to fit the Kalloy Uno. Its the Giant Type A option.

Hope this is useful for someone!

Cyclocross Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Titanium custom gravel frame
« on: October 12, 2023, 09:39:16 PM »
Wow, thank you very much for the comments. Definitely many welcomed expertise here.

I am actually unsure what drivetrain to run, but I am more inclined to run it with my GRX with garbaruk cage (1x11) for simplicity, with a 9-46,9-50/10-50 on the rear and a 38 or 40 in the front, or something on those lines. Since it would be more of an adventure bike, I honestly do not care too much about having the optimal cadence at all times, I can adapt. So maybe 420-425 is enough then provided I can get the maker to tune a bit the seat tube?

A 75 degrees is definitely tempting, but I did not put it in the design because I saw no gravel frames with that (although it is a rather common angle in 29ers nowadays).

I actually have (with my current 73 deg frame) a problem: the horizontal distance from the saddle to the BB is just too long for my body / legs (thinking purely about optimal geo for road bike usage). My bikefit guy recommended me to even find a seatpost that brings me 20mm closer, so I currently use a saddle with 20mm setback but reversed, looks ugly and silly as hell but works.

So maybe a 75 deg seat tube can solve both issues at once. It brings me 25mm closer, I could even lengthen a bit the top tube so that there is less toe overlap, and it helps a bit with rear tire clearance. Together with some shaping in the tube that may actually work, right ?

Here's the updated link. Shadowed my current carbon frame (flyxii fe02)

I think this is buildable, but would likely be 1x only.

Ive played with 650b x 2.2 and shortest stays possible even with a seat tube bend and 85mm BB drop are 410mm for 2x. The yoke would have to be a work of art to make that work. Most likely, I think you would need to up to 415m. With a 700c x 50mm but 1x, I think you could shoot for 405mm but again chainring clearance will be the challenge.

This the the Alibaba shop for Yuan An: https://xmcarbon.en.alibaba.com/index.html. It has some prices listed which could be useful as a reference.

Direct Link to the GRO2 wheels, I mentioned earlier: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/GRO-2-NEW-Forged-Pattern-Gravel_1600449606803.html. I would also go for the the Wing 20 spoke option.

Unless you already have a trading account on Alibaba, I would go through kubackjeees contact, sounds like you can get a better discount and probably better service.

I think it depends on what you are going for. If this is going on a bike where you ride mostly in the hoods but want more ability to keep the front wheel where you want when descending, i would match the hood width and go wider down below. If you want a more aero postilion on the flats without changing your descending, go with the width the same half way between the end of the drop and the hoods; right where you put your hands when covering the brakes.

I personally run a moderate flare Vision road bar on the gravel bike (41cm C-C at the drops and 39cm C-C at the hoods, labeled as a 40cm) as I didnt want a big difference between the drops and the hoods.

On the road I run an Enve SES Aero which is 35cm C-C at the hoods and 40cm C-C in the drops. They were the narrowest aero bars I could find 2 years ago and are the best bars I have ever used in the aero hoods position. They are comfortable and with a little work they definitely helped me get a much faster aero position. They do not negatively affect my ability to climb or sprint.

Today, Speeder has a bar with similar dimensions to the Enve bar, but I would love to go even narrower with a 33cm hoods / 38cm drops bar.

With the design as configured it doesn't work unless you have some tube shaping done. Putting this into bikeCAD you have only 2mm of clearance. You could ask them to offset weld the BB which would help. You could also move to a 75 deg seat post angle and use a set back post or consider dropping the BB even more and lengthening the chainstay.

Plenty of ~400mm A-C carbon forks are out there that will swallow a 700c x 50mm tire. Bent seat tube is a good idea but might make getting the FD working a challenge.

IMO if you are going to try this, I would get a copy of the SRAM Frame Fit guidelines (they offer more detail than Shimano in terms of documentation for min chainstay length, angle between the CS and the FD mount, etc.) and work the design in bikeCAD until you are happy. Then reach out to XACD and Waltly to see what they can do. They have different levels of capabilities and different pricing models. Historically Waltly has been cheaper, but XACD can some pretty nice custom machining if you can be specific about what you are asking for.

This is the first I've heard of Yuan An Composites. Do they have a pretty good reputation?

I dont really know their relationship to Elite Wheels in terms of ownership but if you read carefully they are listed as the manufacturer for Elitewheels. Ive been on their email / sales list for a couple of years, but have always sourced rims from LB instead. MOQ varies by model, but GRO2 is currently listed a one set.

These rims are marketed with the similar process specs including the complete removal of the bladders and not needing to use a release agent as the higher end LB rims.

127
I personally have been really interested in the GRO2 wheels / rims from Yuan An Composites. The complete wheels with the RD13 hubs are just outside your budget but at 1450g, 45mm deep and a modern 32mm wide they check a lot of boxes for me as an allrounder.

Did not see the cervelo one. I would not put stickers like that on my own bike with all the custom options available. But I don't really care that the owner did, since it's his bike. You should also. So chill and stop being such a Karen, because you seem to be indignant af by this fact

Not sure what is getting under your skin so much, just asking a few questions to understand the mindset here.

I am totally cool with taking the elements of a good design and improving them. I think the patent / trademark system is pretty broken and abused. I am less cool with creating counterfeits with the intent to fool others and if you really believe in the big picture of wanting more brand diversity and more great open mold options, you should also care as counterfeits have historically competed against open mold frames for access to the western market via low volume resellers.

Nice to meet you Mr. Chill, I guess I am Karen.

I have some questions about the sizing of the Light Carbon 017, but only at the smallest size. Their size 52 looks pretty comparable in terms of stack and reach to an SL8 or even a size 485 V4RS (387 effective reach after their proprietary stem / headset stuff). At 168cm and change I could make either work really well for me. My custom road bike has a 520mm effective stack and a 393mm effective reach paired with a 100mm stem. Small bikes just scale different.

Based on geometry charts and taking into account the other measurements on the bike like ETT,  HTA and fork offsets I would look at the following frames, some of which you have already looked into:

  • SC-R52D from Speeder would be closest i know of to the V4RS, though you would need to run ~3cm of spacers under the stem which means that you would need to be pretty confident that you would be running close to <1cm of spacers on the V4RS to achieve the same fit.
  • FM 1136 or 1056 from Flybike or Carbonda could be good too based on the numbers. I think there are threads on these as well here.
T

If you are looking to get the fit of a 54cm or larger Look 795 i think the Yishun 1058D and the Flybike 906-D are worth a look as well.

Bro chill out. Fuck UCI, this sticker means nothing even if it is original. It tells nothing about the quality of the frame, it's not like some iso certificate or something. In order to get it frame producer, just needs to pay to this greedy organization and the frame dimensions need to be within UCI rules. They don't care about the quality, just about their rules.

Anyway, gravel scene hates UCI and wants to stay away from this corrupt body as much as they can, so that's the bigger reason for not putting this sticker on the frame. But if the owner wants to do it? It is his choice mate, because this frame checks all to boxes of the rules. The manufacturer just did not pay the bribe. It's not like he is putting fake specialized, cervelo, trek sticker.

There is BOTH a Cervelo logo and a UCI logo on the frame now.

I love gravel and I have no love for the UCI.

What is the point of adding both BOTH logos on your own?

131
I know I am new-ish around here and there is a lot more acceptance of replica frames here than in other places. However, I don't really understand the point of adding a UCI logo to non-approved frame unless the point was go beyond adding the Cervelo logo on the HT to convince people that this is a real Aspero 5 or convince a race judge that this is an approved frame for use somewhere.

In general, I love the idea and geometry of this frameset. It's too bad IMO that they copied the downsides of this frameset along side the good things. I would have loved to see an aggressive gravel race bike like this or an all-road bike that used a round tube steerer, 52mm bearings lower and upper and a t47BB, either an asymmetric one or a normal one.

Just received my eRX.

Installing and getting everything set up, will report back.

So far, everything really feels quality!

For those that have received the set - I got the nobox/nobattery version - the directions all talk about setting up the brakes by adding the mineral oil and stuff - but seems like the lines are already filled?

What's the strategy to connecting them, already filled, to the brifters without making a god damned mess? lol.

I havent built a set of ERX, but generally if you leave one end of hose connected either to the lever or caliper, very little fluid leaks out. Sort of like putting your thumb over the end of the straw. If you are using a routing kit, the tool should plug the line as well.

I prefer the Rockshox Reverb Stealth Barb Connector tool + cable liner to do the routing. If its a new frame with the liner installed or an old frame with existing hose, you just use the little tool to connect to the old line and pull the new line through. The tool is $2-$4 and well worth having around IMO.

The bikes was tested today and I think it is good to go now. We used a lot of Cervelo parts for the build.

Frame - YFR068
Cervelo stem - alloy
Cervelo bars - carbon fiber
Cervelo stem plug
Cervelo seat post
Cervelo frame bag
Cervelo computer mount
Cervelo stem spacers and a couple of the Airwolf ones
Supakaz bar tape
Group - GRX Di2 x 1 up front
XT brake rotors
Chinese carbon wheels no name
Specialized pathfinder tires
Weight - 19.5 lbs

Pardon my ignorance, but the frame doesnt come with the UCI approval right? You added the UCI sticker?

Component Deals & Selection / Re: ODIN ZEUS one piece carbon stem
« on: September 28, 2023, 08:31:17 PM »
I ran across these the other day as well. For some reason, I am seeing the Darimo ix2 as being diffferent across the range, but includes the hardware vs. Odin Zeus not including the hardware in their weights. so the Darimo stuff ends up being quite a bit lighter.

FWIW, weighed without hardware my 100mm -17 deg Kalloy Uno stem weighs 82g vs. 73g for the Odin Zeus. As others mentioned the Kalloy stems are 17.50USD + shipping and tax. You can then spend $12 on Ti hardware and be likely be within 5-6g of the whole thing for 1/3rd the cost.

There is a 1 mm difference between these BBs. Can I simply use a T47-85.5 in a wider frame shell?

This depends on the length of your spindle. If you are using a wide crankset (or rival / apex 1x) it will be fine to use the sram BB. You will need a custom pack of spacers. 2mm total on the DS and 5mm on the NDS. A regular AXS crank will not fit with this BB unless you are willing for it to be off-center. Luckily i think other brands like wheels MFG make solutions that work.

In reality always get my own spacer packs as I like to ensure that the cranks are centered to the seat tube.
