Component Deals & Selection / Chinese carbon MTB cranks
« on: February 19, 2022, 03:48:45 AM »
Hey there,

Just wondering if anyone has experience/recommendations for a good pair of Chinese carbon MTB cranks, meant to be used for an XC bike. SRAM direct mount, boost spacing, 1by setup. Thanks!

Well I got a tracking number, on its way:

All the best with the shipping and build! :)

Curious to know if you were able to figure out whether the vendor actually uses Textreme in this frame (I'm assuming you ordered from Lexon), and what the total cost was, if you don't mind sharing! Thanks! :)

Very interesting, all the best with the build! Looking forward to see how it all turns out :) what kind of headset would you have to use for this frame?

Hi everyone,

I would like to run Magura MTB calipers (MT2s) on my next gravel bike, but I'd need some adapter to mount this post mount caliper onto a flat mount frame. I plan to run 160mm rotors. I know it's possible, having seen Chris Froome run them on his race bike for the TdF haha! I just can't figure out which adapter to get..

For the life of me I can't seem to get a clear answer from our favourite store Aliexpress :o would anyone be willing to give some advice on this? Thanks everyone :)

PS I know Magura sell the adapters, but I struggle to believe something OEM wouldn't work here; maybe I can save some $$ for nicer bar tape haha!

Interesting frame. This is the most road like geometry i've seen with 45mm tire clearance. Trails is short at 53mm so its gonna be fairly lively for a gravelbike. Won't work that well on the very technical stuff but it'll probably feel quite nice on the longer stretches of plain gravel.

Cables are quite funny... External cables for rear brake and derailleurs but front brake has to go through the headset! Look closely at the pictures...
I'd say you have to go fully internal and live with the cable ports on the downtube.

:o those are good catches, thanks Zdrenka89! The geo was already a bit of a put-off, now that you mention the cable routing I'm even more wary of this frame. Sounds like I'll need some kind of proprietary headset to run this.. maybe if I close my eyes and imagine I'm riding an Aspero, that won't be so bad, haha!  ;D

It's interesting that Lexon claims the use of Swedish Textreme https://www.textreme.com/ to reinforce the frame. If that's truly the case, it might be worth the small premium over other builders like Velobuild. I'd be quite keen on this frame if that were truly so!

However their blatant rip-off of Scott's marketing, down to 'Lexon's patented aero tubing' even with a big square downtube, leaves a really bad taste.

Hi all,

I'm considering a Twitter R7 for my next bike build, chiefly because of how cheap it is, and because it uses a round seatpost. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this brand before, or if it's one to avoid. Twitter bikes are fairly common where I live, though I've never tried one before. I'm looking for a bike that can double as a road and gravel bike, and is on the faster, snappier side of things. If I were really rich I'd get a Ridley Kanzo Fast, but that's out of the price range for now.

To me the geometry looks a bit funky (72.5 HTA paired with 420mm stays sounds more like a crit racer) but I'm curious what the geometry wizards here think. Thanks all!

In the market for a gravel racing bike, this looks like an interesting option! For those that have ordered, what is the shipping like?

Thanks all, appreciate the advice!

Wendy from LightCarbon told me they are having a $30 discount on their wheelsets for 11.11. Sounds like it might be a good reason to pull the trigger. Their DT Swiss wheelset prices seem to have gone up though, when I asked about this Wendy told me it was because DT raised their prices.. Have no idea about that  :o

Looks like an interesting frame. I'm a big fan of the straighter tube designs and (what looks like) regular seatpost.

After The Ride / 11.11 deals from the big boys
« on: November 03, 2021, 08:56:41 AM »
Hey everyone, just curious if anyone knows whether the 'big boys' - the likes of Carbonda, LightCarbon, Haideli, etc. do have 11.11 sales? It seems like their websites aren't often updated with any information on this.

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on some stuff from Carbonda, and was wondering if 11.11 would be a good time to do so, or if there's no need to rush. Would appreciate anyone's expertise on this.

Thanks!

Hi Noodleshop,

So, I run a 48T, 0 offset, Narrow-Wide 1x chainring, with about 25mm of clearance (50mm of clearance in terms of chainring diameter) before the chainring would rub the chainstay.
A 48T chainring has a diameter of 200.8mm, and a 50T has a diameter of 208.8mm (delta of 8.8mm), so there would be ample room.

In terms of chainline you should be OK except in the lowest gears.   I am guessing the chainline between a 48T and 50T chainring will be very similar.
I currently run a 12S 11-32T cassette.  The chainline sweet spot is on the 7th gear, 48x15 (this yields 36.8kph at 90RPM)

The chainline deviation is acceptable for me (no discernable friction, no drivetrain noise) between 4th and 9th gears (25T and 14T). 3rd (28T) and 11th (12T) gears feel fine, but the deviation starts to look a bit excessive.  2nd (30T) and 12th (11T) gears have clear deviation, but does not generate any rubbing noises.  1st gear (32T) clearly is excessive, and rubbing can be heard.

I didn't actually measure anything - this is all just based on eyeball and on-the-road experience

Thanks so much 1Sigma, great to hear from someone running a similar setup! Appreciate the really detailed numbers. Sounds like there will be ample room to run the 50t oval in there!

The chainline deviation info sounds acceptable to me, where I'm at is pretty flat and I rarely find myself in the top gears. 36.8kmph at 90rpm with four gears to spare, sounds pretty ample for my speed range.

May I ask about what crank/chainring setup you are running? Still shopping around for those. I was thinking about the Zrace cranks but heard some unhappy reviews of them around here. I'd prefer the SRAM-style direct mount chainrings without a spider, but would love to hear what you're using.

I bought a Leonardi in an ocasion semi-new, but yes, is expensive.
You have also the E Thirteen cassettes 11v of 9-34, 9-39, cheaper than Leonardi.

Have in mind that with the 9 cog you can go with chainring 42 or 44. the 42-9 is aprox the same relation that the 52-11. The 44-9 is more than 53-11. In the low side, the 42-36 is like 34-29 (more than a compact).

Thanks for the information stmbike, really appreciate it :) didn't know those existed! Those open up some interesting possibilities. The price is a lot more palatable too!

Finished!! All was fine, but the internal cabling thru the stem-handlebar is not easy…at the end looks great. I’ll ride tomorrow to test it, will see how it works.
Info: this bike shares geometry with SL7, but the seatpost has little seatback.. have in mind to fit.

- Velobuild frame VB-R-168 size 58.
- Velobuild integrated stem+handlebar 110/440
- Ultegra 8020-8070
- Crankset Rotor 3D+ 1x (42t)
- Cassette leonardi 9-36
- wheels serenade 45mm (28mm witdth) tubular
- 7,6kg with pedals and bottle cages.

Very curious about this cassette, and if anyone knows where to find an aliexpress version! $429 for the Leonardi is quite steep for me, unfortunately. :o

I was looking at the 10-36 one from SROAD but I'd have to run a 48t single front chainring to get the gearing I want. Furthermore I plan to run an oval so the size will be more like a 50-51t, it's quite tough to find a frame that can clear that size chainring as a 1x setup, unless anyone has some ideas to tinker with the chainline to make this possible.

I got specs from ICAN for the headset, they say its;
41.8/30. 15x6x45deg
52/40. 15x7x45deg

So, as yet there's no Slack-R for it which i as shame as that takes this off the table for me at 68.5deg.
Was getting complicated with trying to work out if I could fit megatower chainstay flip chips and run it non boost.

perhaps you can try offset bushings, they helped make my 69.5 deg HTA bike a bit more stable :)
