The bottom bearing of my headset(a cane creek 40) seized with the rust a month or so ago.
The main bearing on the Lefty developed some serious play.
And I'm on my 3rd pair of BB bearings.

I will never buy expensive bearings for these parts anymore.
I was disappointed initially, but bearings are cheap after all.

I've never changed any of these on my Cannondale Rush...

Component Deals & Selection / Re: XTR M9000 with KMC X11SL chain?
« on: April 20, 2015, 04:06:51 AM »
Sorry for the hijack, but it is about XX1.

KMC mentions in their marketing, some racers using the X11 SL on XX1.
http://www.kmcchain.eu/cms/media/downloads/ChainGuide_GB.pdf

I tried but it didn't work well.
As soon as there was a climb, a "clic-clic-clic" noise was coming from the chainring(a SRAM 28T at that time),
The noise becoming stronger with the climb.

Anyone has tried it successfully on an XX1?

It's got disc brakes and a thru axle- shouldn't it also have a 1X drivetrain?  :)

Here it is!

What do you think about thru axle type disc road bike frame ?

Peter,
I'm interested by the 092 frame too.
What is the weight of the frame? And the fork?

Disc brakes may become mainstream quicker than thought:

Once a standard for thru axle stand from the crowd, I jump!

Thanks for posting. The article is very interesting, and will probably help some friends to switch.

The end explains to step down 2 teeth for the chain rings between 26, 27.5 and 29 wheels for the same cassette.
If you are ok with a 34 teeth on a 26, take a 32 on a 27.5 and a 30 on a 29er.

Nice. One of the sharpest builds I've seen thus far.
I had the same impression when seeing the pictures.
I guess the wheels/spokes contribute a lot to a light design.

For the internal cable routing, you can always cross them, at the top.
Accessing them from the headset holes.
On a 256 frame it is easy. However it looks on a 057, some drilling may be necessary.

It is funny how he's still selling a "Specialized" but changed(upgraded...) everything on the bike.

29er / Re: Let's Discuss Head Tube Angle
« on: April 02, 2015, 05:27:26 AM »
The Lefty on my 256 is 10mm off from the AC distance defined on the geometry.
Making it in theory steeper than it should.

I'm still not convinced of the effects of small variations in the chainstay, the offset of the fork, the angle of the head tube/seat tube, etc.
Even if Cannondale market all this massively on their FSi for instance.

However if a brake lever is just few mm lower on one side, the seat is a hair lower, etc. after a fall for instance, I notice it immediately.
Like if someone change, even slightly, the position of your car seat or driving wheel.
So small things matter apparently.

The problem, is that it's very difficult to isolate a change like the head tube angle and be sure of its effect.
Testing the same bike with different fork length could be a good test, even if the whole frame angle change.

You will need a new barb and olive anytime you disconnect the lever from the brake line.
With Hope's brakes, you can reuse the existing olive and barb.

@RS VR6, I like the lines of your future Hard Tail!
They are somehow more modern, straighter than the 256 / 057.

I'm always wondering if the 10mm shorter chainstay(compared to the 256) makes any difference, or we are just marketing victims.
Did you take the QR as you have existing wheels, or you don't like thru-axle?

Looking forward for the build!

Yes 641, but this is ok if you have a tiny play or not at all.
What bottom bracket do you have?

Most people use loctite (just can't remember which number exactly at the moment) to secure the bearings.

It is the LOCTITE n° 641

@arraider, What kind of bottom bracket do you have (BB30? PF30? Other?)
I used initially the standard SRAM PF30, but switched to a bbinfinite.com one.
Which provides a far better alignment of the bearings.

After The Ride / Re: Tubeless gods frown upon me...

I'll put it on another rim and inflate it with a tube
Next time I'll try it. May be it would work even without a rim. Just inflating a tube, and leaving it for a few hours.
