The rim tape is vital as CD pointed out.

From my experience, every tire seems different, even the same models, some pop immediately while other take you a while to get on.
But in all cases, putting soapy water seems to make the tire pop much faster.

Once the tire is seated, don't move it out for the sealant.
I was doing this before and sometimes had to restart the soapy thing again.

Just remove the end of the valve.
And with a 60ml seringue, and a plastic tube, pour the sealant through the valve.
Put the valve back, inflate and shake/rotate.

Sjon7283, I'm afraid you have to return/exchange the DT Swiss axle you got. brmeyer135, is right.

The E-thru is the one needed for the dropouts that come with the 256 frame, and has an end bolt.
While the X12, based on syntace design, expects a thread integrated in the dropout.

snipe, thank you for mentioning that... little detail, I quickly forgot.

Hello Flyxii, thank you for coming here, do you plan to provide thru-axle endurance/road frames for disc brakes in the future?

I have the DT Swiss axle.
There is an end bolt.

You may have bought only the axle.
I saw on bike24.com they do sell them together or separately.

Component Deals & Selection / Problem with SRAM PF30 Bottom Bracket
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:19:08 PM »
Back in June, when ordering my 256 frame, I thought PF30 is the new standard, and took this format.
Then I installed the stock SRAM PF30 that comes with the XX1 groupset.

So far so, good. No creeks or any noise, and without the need of loctite.
Spinning the pedals by hand - without the chain on - was far from smooth, but ok.

Things started to get wrong after the first real ride in the mud.
The bearings were immediately contaminated.
Spinning was sticky, and the bearings made a noise like there was sand in them.

I took the bearings out, cleaned them. And packed them with grease.
If you wonder. They were pre-loaded correctly and I don't pressure wash the bike.

Unfortunately SRAM's BB looks to be designed either for dry conditions only. Or as disposable gear you discard after a race.
A the next wet ride, the bearing were making again the scraping noise and the spin seriously degraded.
It may be a little mental-thing(like many on a bike), but having a resistance when pedalling was depressing.

So I started to look at alternative options.
And found bbinfinite.com

I liked the design immediately, and ordered one.
Mounting it was easy, and wow... what a difference!
The spin was so smooth that I made this comparison video:

Now, after a few weeks of very wet/muddy rides(see the attached picture of a soft one).
The BBinfinite is now making a light noise too(non-drive bearing).
But it keeps spinning like in the video.
Nothing compared to SRAM's noise and friction.

I returned the BB to SRAM(through bike24.com), explaining the design issue for wet rides.
They were very kind, and returned me a new BB.
Unfortunately without any word or explanation, so I guess nothing will change on SRAM's side.

7ducati, I preferred something else than Shimano too.
And went for these http://www.hopetech.com/product/race-e4/ instead

With a front 183mm rotor in front, and a rear 160mm

May be the 4 pistons are overkill for an XC bike, but they are very light.
They provide plenty of stopping power while needed, and are very modulable.

And since I messed up while mounting them, I know they are very easy to bleed.

Good choice, the 256 frame is great fun to ride.

Since you are still in doubt. One of the things I'm most happy is the 1X set.
I took the rather expensive XX1, but there are clearly alternative options.

Peter from Iplay said they designed the 256 frame, may be send him an email to know what FD they had in mind by putting the hole this way.

Hi Vipassana, are you happy with the IP-SP7 seatpost?

Is it easy to setup to the right angle?
And does it keep it well?

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Bike lights

I'm just back from a night ride here in Belgium.

And it was the second time I used this cheap light:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Generation-XM-L2-X2-Cree-LED-Bike-Bicycle-MTB-Light-Cycling-Lights-UK-Stock-/161362759435?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

The brand is UniqueFire. There are plenty of sellers of this light on ebay but this one ships free in Europe.
It has two different beams.
One narrow beam, as a long range.
The other beam is wide and short range.

The 5000LM is totally misleading.
I would say it looks a bit less bright than my Lupine Piko at 900LM.
But still very good for the price.

The battery case is more waterproof than the usual pack you get with other lights.

Not a good news, for all of us.
Did you see it coming, or you saw the wear all of a sudden?

The most important noise I get from my 256 is the chain slacking the chain stay.
When not pedalling on a rough descent for instance.

A thing I though would not happen with the XX1, but definitely happening.
Especially if you are on the smaller sprockets.
I thought it was the cable at the beginning.

Go a gear or two down and this noise, at least, stops immediately.

Sjon7283, I took hookless rims.
The external width is 30mm, there are thinner and lighter rims for XC, I think, but I preferred them more robust.

The front wheel has a 123 project hub(for a Lefty fork) and is 680g.
The rear wheel has a Hope Pro V2 Evo(for an XX1 cassette) and is 856g.
Laced with their Pillar aero spoke PSR X-TRA 1420, 32 per wheel.

They say tubeless ready, so it means you need to put a tape(Stan or other) over the spoke holes.
If you want to go tubeless with them. What I did without any problem.

You may ask to Nancy at light-bicycle.com too.
She is very competent and fast to reply.
In addition they may have more hubs/spoke types available.

After a very rough and rocky ride, my rear wheel(30mm hookless on a 256 19" frame) went out of trueness for about 3-4mm.
I remember the moment of a big hit, by the noise it made, I even thought the rim was broken.
But may be as advertised, hookless rims resist better to abuses.

I contacted her.
She told me it can happen for a new set of wheels, and asked if I had the adequate tools.

Got a spoke wrench and tightened 3-4 spokes, and it is now true again.
I'm very happy of these carbon rims.

With 30mm it seems you can put a lower pressure.
However I use 1.8-2 bar( I'm 72Kg).

For the bar. I was coming from a 26" too, and didn't want those wide bars.
So I took a 66cm bar, that fits my shoulder width.
And can still corner as near to the trees as before.
