A friend who rides a 496, has 3" tires on 36mm/42mm rims, since 2017
http://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,1159.msg13191.html#msg13191

Yeah and I've heard of people throwing 140mm forks on frames designed for 100mm, that doesn't meant its a good idea or safe.

Any chance a 3" tire on 35~40mm ID rim would fit on this frame?

Isn't a 3" tyre too wide for a 35-40mm rim?  I would have thought 2.6 or 2.8 would have been the widest that rim would take.

I wish they would get rid of the under BB cable routing and go over the BB instead.

You can take this reply with a grain of salt and I will not be at all offended.

I would steer clear of any chinese 27.5 + frame for one very simple reason, I can't think of one (and I am happy to be shown I am wrong) 27.5+ frame that is NOT a 27.5+ / 29er frame. They are are not different rear triangles they are frames built for a 29er that accept 27.5+ tyres.  What's wrong with that I hear people ask?

The BB heights are too low for riding anything but butter smooth, groomed bike park trails with 165mm cranks.  If near constant pedal strikes on anything but those trails isn't an issue for you then have at it but otherwise look specifically at 27.5 frames or move up to 29er wheels.

Hope that helps and good luck with your search.

I love the over BB cable routing, but not sure about the cable routing through the bars and headset yet. I just don't see enough benefit to warrant the trouble routing it.

I have tried to change the title, but it seems that it is only changed in my initial post.

I see it as "New Lexon Spirit"  on the thread listing page, on the title of the thread and also in your first post. Maybe one of the mods changed the topic for you but it looks ok at this end.

I got sick of the pedal strikes with 27.5+ and went with a cheap set of Giant 29" wheels. Made such a difference to the bike it's not funny.

Stupid question, did you upgrade your bolts to JJJ's revised ones?

Thrill, I think you have quoted the wrong comment. Thankfully I got impatient waiting and I didn't buy one of these frames as I got something else earlier.

« on: April 10, 2022, 10:41:12 PM »
I got a medium FM10 frame and put a 185mm Manitou Mara shock on it. There's about 10mm of clearance between the seatstay yoke and the seat tube at full extension. They claim 150mm of rear wheel travel with a 185x55mm shock, but I'm skeptical. (I also don't know a good way to measure rear suspension travel.)

Secure your bike in a bike work stand so that both wheels are touching the ground.  Measure from the ground to the centre of the rear axle. Drop all of the air out of your rear shock. Without moving the bike in the stand (it is important that the BB height and front end remains static) lift your rear wheel up of the ground until you have used all of the stroke on the shock. Measure from the ground to the centre of the rear axle (you might want a helper for this)  subtract the first dimension from the second and that should tell you how much rear wheel travel you have.

I could be way off here but looking at how much your wheel still moves in that rear triangle and the fact that sounds to me more like something under tension rubbing against cf I would be looking really closely at the dropouts to make sure everything is tight and also aligned where it should be.  As I said, I could be way off and just going by experience with similar sounds on other bikes.

You need to scrape away the paint and excess resin inside the recess to find the original 23 mm diameter.

If you don't know what the grub screw is for, BEWARE, your bearings are at risk! I explained that on the mailing list:

Important reminder: only tighten the bolt "finger tight", the purpose being only to compensate the axial clearance. The "finger tight" sensation is a little difficult to feel with the tight fit of the bolt. Tighten while turning the link; when you feel a crunching sensation in the link, stop and back-off a little until the turning becomes smooth again.

It's the role of the M8 grub screw to hold the bolt in place, tighten that one sufficiently when you've finger-tightened the bolt. Beforehand, insert the grub screw through the tip of the bolt. You can then use a 4 mm Allen wrench to tighten it through the bolt head.

Cudos to you JJJ.

You have put some effort and thought into solving this when the when manufacturer is nowhere to be seen.

Well done.

First, apollogies for the image size, I've edited my original post, I'm on a 27" screen and didn't realize how badly it would scale on smaller screens.

Willow, no need to apologise, it is a very common issue and obviously, if it was noticeable to the person posting they wouldn't have posted that way, it's just the way the site scales pics for various user interfaces.  It's also not just restricted to this site, but this does seem to be worse than most of the others I visit.

Thank you for taking the time to edit the post.  The portrait pics still don't quite fit on my screen but are close enough that I can see how fantastic your bike looks, well done, you must be happy with it. I'm sure they would fit fine if google banners and window tool bars weren't occupying real estate top and bottom.  That colour really does look great.

you need to click the thumbnail to load the larger image and then right click the larger image  and make sure to choose open image in new tab and not open link in new tab

Thank you. That seems to work and saves me downloading the images.

Image sizing seems really bad in general on this site.  I usually right click photos and open in a new tab (in Chrome) and then it'll auto scale well.

When I do that the end up about the size of the thumbnails on this site.
I find it very annoying and have tried to raise it several times but it generally seems to fall on deaf ears.

Have a similar issue on MTBR but generally only with one or two serial offenders that post screen shots from the latest and greatest iclones, frigging images end up huge and any text is just blurry.

Anyone else having trouble looking at those pics on a monitor?  They are so bloody big I see about 1 tenth of a pic on the screen at a time. (22" monitor)
