After The Ride / slide / click vertical retention of helmet fix
« on: September 13, 2026, 04:38:09 AM »
for those with helmets with slide / click vertical retention that simply slips, like my new helmet did straight out of the box

i slid 3 3x16in id o-rings that fit tightly (no glue!) over the end of the vertical retention adjuster, pushed 'em right down & now it won't slip down▼at all, used like a max limit but undo-able

adding them also pushed the bar out slightly (albeit a bit of a side effect!) so the teeth engage properly & also stops unwanted slip up▲, tho you can move it when you intend to

i didn't fancy cutting the very end stop off the vertical retainer so that i could slide it all the way to put o-rings on the bottom side too, i'll see if i have to change my mind

original italian design fixed by english engineering (haha)

try it @ your own risk !!!

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / durahelm as a helmet manufacturer ?
« on: August 20, 2026, 06:00:17 AM »
not sure if i'm posting this in quite the right spot but here goes

anyone ever heard of durahelm, nowt comes up if i google them?!

i started looking for a new helmet & something popped up looking very sort of kask protone

when questioned i got assured they're certified meeting EN 1078 (Europe/UK) standard & made in italy by durahelm

currently working on basis bogus & not safe

anyone any experience ?

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Carbon ceramic rotors

the gcntech video :

     *

should make clear why this is not a developed tech for road or mountain bicyles and why bigger companies haven't gone there

it is even more stupid simply putting a squealing carbon coating over steel (that just scratches off under even moderate braking) as in the aliex offerings

safety should be you primary concern - don't even think about it

just to relate my experience - BUYER BEWARE

i'll begin by saying that as a short 5ft 7in / 1.7m tall bloke & light weighing approx 10st 7lbs / 66kg (wringng wet) with normal length legs i :

    *     can just stand over the frames of my 2 x mtb's without squashing my dangly bits against the top tube
    *     ride 165mm crank arms (have to!)

across those two mtb's i have seatposts that are :

    *     30.9 (whyte)
    *     31.6 (ritchey)

both of which comfortably allow height adjustment well within safety limits / minimum required insertion points in seat tube as specified by manufacturer

i recently purchased two "zoom suspension" seatposts ie. pic enclosed is of the 31.6 widely available @ aliex

at no point was a minimum insertion length in the seat tube indicated

when they arrived @ 350mm they looked very much shorter than both my existing ritchey & whyte seatposts but in most of what i'd read pre-purchase are deemed very long

ignoring any potential issue with sag from just sitting on the suspension seatpost, ie. setting things with same height / fore&aft / angle settings as current i am massively disappointed that in order to use either zoom seatpost then i'd have to :

    *     find atleast 20mm to reach minimum insertion point in seat tube
    *     chop length of my legs
    *     stop wearing padded shorts
    *     ride bare foot
    *     buy saddles with greater stack height
    *     ride crank arms over 185mm!

i conclude they are hopeless for anyone :

    *     over a maximum of 5ft 5in
    *     doesn't have a ridiculously high seat tube

am therefore back to square one looking to find a version of suspension seatpost that is considerably longer than 350mm with better minimum insertion point

Component Deals & Selection / Re: 3D Printed Saddles
« on: August 20, 2025, 03:03:55 AM »
i looked at ryet saddles and found one that echoed the shape of my selle italia that has to be replaced and appears to have bigger cutouts / channels

i couldn't find any ryet saddles with anything other than oval 7x9 carbon rails

not wanting to buy other seatposts aswell i asked a question of ryet via aliex, stating i couldn't / wouldn't purchase if it only came with carbon rails

their response was a simple and very NON-helpful "sorry if that troubles you"

i bought the zrace flavoured version for my two mtbs

after being disappointed with the difference in feel and lever travel between all four brakes i looked to bleed & degas them

carefully removing the bleed screws from the levers i found that not one of the o-rings was intact (split or in one case only 3/4 of an o-ring)

am working on the basis it is down to poor machining of the threads as it did the same to the o-rings on my bleed kit

time to stock up with loads of spare o-rings

still think they should have proper caliper bleed nipples not just bleed screws and it is a shame that bleed nipples from hope tech or shimano simply don't fit, different sizes & threads!

7
does anyone know :

     *     the dimensions for the hope hbsp238 bleed nipples pictured and thread
     *     if they'll work as replacements for bleed port screws on other manufacturers calipers
     *     whether it matters if dot fluid or mineral oils is used?

thanks
terry

ok, so i thought i'd give a little update on how things have gone with the zrace m1 x2 i purchased for my two mtb's and see if anyone else's experiences matches mine?!

you can adjust reach but not lever travel

with 4 brakes with very different levels of lever travel and uneven braking 'tis time to bleed & de-gas whole systems to try and balance things out

firstly shimano red mineral oil smells like fish guts!

for each 5m bleed screw @ levers discover all o-rings are already wrecked, bits even missing, due to poor machining of thread @ manufacture and it did exactly the same to the o-ring on my bleed equipment

is it even possible to buy just o-rings for 5m bleed screws and i suppose same question applies to the 4m o-rings for caliper bleed scews?

will be really interested to learn, when it comes to the 4m bleed screws @ caliper, has anyone replaced theirs with decent bleed nipples and if so what did you use?

thanks

just to say received 1st set of zrace's today, less than 4 days door to door from 'tother side of globe

initial reactions :

     *     impressed by apparent build quality
     *     levers, smaller than imagined from other's photos which is good since i got small paws
     *     now just to pfaff a bit to swap levers to left / rear and right / front but got to shorten hose anyways so no big deal

might try and add some pix once complete, if anyone is interested?

10
i've seen several different shots of both 2 piston and 4 piston brake calipers where :

    *     brake bleed nipple
    *     banjo hose connector

are interchanged (as shown here on hope x2)

are both configurations ok, does either provide any performance or functional difference?

ps. i reached out to hope tech but the clock is still ticking...

thanks

hi Ludo

are you using them with the kind of matchmaker clamps avid/sram use - it looks as tho they shud work?

cheers

i got so fed up with trying to get aliexpress or alibaba to function but found a differenct branded listing of the same product on dhgate

i managed to create an id on dhgate, ordered & paid no problem for 2 sets

i expected email confirmation of order & payment but their system only seems to have its own messaging system

a while later i then noticed order has a flag suggesting out of stock

queried seller who now just states they're taking down their original listing and won't ship as too heavy (at 1.1kg for package)

as yet no refund either !

what jokers?!

14
is anyone actually using either the 2 or 4 piston version of the zrace m1?

any technical comments and where did you source them?

they look to me to be the same as the iiipro e2 or e4 just with different branding

for the sakes of my mental welfare i have now totally given up on all of the total charade that is ali(b /x / whatever)

they are enuff to drive a guy to drink or jump off the roof

it ain't dante alighieri's inferno - but "abandon all hope, ye who enter here" - no hope, no escape & no redemption!

once ali f*cks up (and it might initially be their problem not yours) that is it, game over

unless you start afresh on a different :

    *     machine
    *     ip address
    *     email address
    *     phone number

you're totally scr*wed

all sarcasm aside my conclusion is 'tis time to stop blaming the clowns and simply time to ask why i've kept trying to buy tickets to the circus

GOODBYE
