Bit odd imo not to put a paddle (even a dummy one) on the left brifter on the 1x.  It looks weird, and a non-dummy could be used either for a dropper or converting to 2x ...

Also, having the thumb shifter on the right and not the left is going to feel very odd and lead to imbalance between left and right hands when you're on the hoods, and consequently different weight distribution that certainly won't add steering or braking.

In light of this I can't see many people choosing the gravel brifter set.

Campagnolo does the same thing with their Ekar shifters. And that line from what info I can gather seems like it is popular / good in overall?

And because Ltwoo is already copying their designs and internals I guess they just followed what they did.

I was also wondering if lubing the cable would be a noticeable improvement. I have not done it in the past. And as I was browsing AliX i found these prelubed cable guides with some dust caps: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001046329415.html

I do not know how useful the dust caps are but their description was just too good to not to try them.  :D
(It was just funny to read how many iterations they had before finding the right structure for the end caps.)

The frame has full outer cabling so my plan is to run the cables in these prelubed guides through the full length of the bike with these dust caps at end. My expectation is that dust will not really get into the system with these steps. Time will tell.

I bought these red coated steel brake cables for a new neo retro rim brake build I am planning to do. I did not have the chance to try them out yet as I need to take the frame and fork to the LBS for some minor repair.

I tried to justify why I need the golden one but I could not because it was just too expensive. This red one cost the same as the bog standard ones I could buy from wiggle and the other webshops. So I thought why not.

Wow... a travel case for your bolts.

Yeah, none of the listings picture show the packaging so it is quite surprising the first time you receive it.

Did you tell them ?
I didn't like it either, and complained.
If we are many they may improve this, and save some money too.

That is a very good point and have not crossed my mind. I will also explain to them what my opinion is about their packaging.

StiffWeenies already mentioned the brand called Risk from AliExpress and I can only recommend them.

I started to replace the rusty bolts with titanium ones sold by them. I am using their chainring bolts for over a year and their headset bolt for 6 months now without any problems.

My only complaint is that their packaging is too fancy. They send the bolts in a metal box which is padded with form fitted foam. In my opinion it is just too much waste. I would have been perfectly happy just receiving the bolts in paper bags. :)

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Oval chainrings for Road bike
« on: October 21, 2021, 01:55:10 PM »
I am using a pair of 52-36 absolute black oval chainrings for 4 years now. I could not find anything on ali at that time so I bought this used set on ebay. I have not looked if there is anything good on ali nowadays.

I have switched stock ultegra 6800 chainrings to these absolute blacks. On the very first ride I felt some difference. I cannot describe it but it felt somehow different. Then the feeling went away after maybe a couple of hundred meters. My commuter has regular round rings and when I switch between that and my best bike with oval chainrings I cannot feel any difference anymore.

One thing did change and it seems like it is here to stay which is occasional chain drops when switching from the big ring to the small one. I could not figure out when it is happening because it is so random and rare-ish. But I have never had it with the ultegra rings. The indexing is correct and everything.

Before buying them I did a lot of research and found multiple forum posts on the internet describing similar problems. One of them suggested to get a chain catcher. I followed that advice and I am happy that I did. I would definitely suggest the same to protect that precious carbon frame. :D

As far as I know tubeless rims have different hooks on the side of the rim than the clinchers. I think they are bigger or more prominent or something else to help the tubeless tyres to achieve a good seal. So it is true that clincher rims will not accommodate tubeless tyres but the tubeless rims can fit clinchers. I have gp5000s on my tubeless wheels at the moment and did not have a problem with it. I also had pro one tle tubeless tyres before but after having 3 punctures in a week I ditched the whole concept of tubeless and went back to clinchers.

I have tried many wheelsets with different hubs but all of them had the same flaw. Most of the pawl based hubs are annoyingly loud. I hate that. Then I tried the dtswiss 350 hub with an 18 teeth star ratchet system and I can say it is a huge difference. They are really quiet. So for me the extra $100 would totally worth it.

One thing I am keen to try out are the dtwiss star ratchet copycat hubs on ali. Also the RD13 hub from elitewheels is such a dtswiss copy.

I am also thinking of going down the same route (single base colour + stickers). I have recently found https://www.dyedbro.com/. They sell custom printed frame protectors and have a couple of designs I like. But they can also print something personalised too.

These are not particularly small so I am not sure if you had something like this in mind. But I thought I will share it in case someone does look for something similar. :D

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
« on: September 25, 2021, 01:32:04 PM »
Hi everyone! I was very close to finishing the build today. All was left was the press fit bottom bracket. As I don’t have a tool, I used a bolt, nuts and washers. However, as I was pushing it in, the bracket was misaligned and now it crooked. I do not know how to realign it. Do I need to remove it and try again? If so, how do I remove it without damaging the frame? I heard I need to hit it quite hard and im afraid it might crack the frame.
Thanks!

The tolerances for the press fit bbs are tight. I would definitely take them out to check if any of sides developed a hairline crack. Just to ease my mind.

I still remember vividly the first time I had to take out a press fit bb from a carbon frame. I only used a small force with a rubber hammer and the bb was not moving at all. Then I googled a lot and realised I need to put in some decent force to push out the cups. It was nerve wrecking.

I have used a similar tool to this one:

After The Ride / Re: Airtags!
« on: September 15, 2021, 01:41:24 PM »
apparently they do not transmit well through carbon
Do you have more info about this? My EW-WU111 Di2 transmitter is in my carbon road bikes downtube. I just tried to connect to it over bluetooth with my phone from circa 3-4 meters and connected quickly. Did not notice any visible lag because I was further away. And I think the airtags also use ble (although Apple does like to come up with proprietary solutions).

I do not have yet any airtags but planning to use them with my best bike. I actually wanted to use two. One in a fairly visible location like what Snacks posted or under the saddle. And one somewhere totally hidden. This way finding the obvious one might provide some false safety feeling to the thief while I still have a chance to recover my bike.

My hidden position would be inside the downtube from the bottom bracket end. I would use one of these strips:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Command-17205-12PK-Picture-Hanging-17205-12pk/dp/B00OI6NQUI

I have a bb86 bottom bracket so to make the yearly airtag battery replacement simpler I would get one of those screw together bb from aliexpress.

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: ICAN triaero A9

Hello all,

Finally got my ICAN A9 and started building the bike.

I have run into some trouble and I'm not able to understand what to do now. The length of the front caliper is not matching with the threads provided in the fork.

What do I do? Please help  :'(

I cannot really see your brake caliper from that angle but it seems like it might be a post mount caliper. If it is then you need a post to flat mount adapter to install it.
