Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: VeloBuild VB-R-268 frame
« on: November 15, 2024, 08:19:42 AM »
I ordered on 27.10. Yesterday Chris sent me a picture when I asked. Said it will be shipped tomorrow or saturday. Could've been a bit sooner (he said it would), but it's ok I guess. When I ordered from Carbonda my xc frame, they shipped it really fast (but it was without painting).

Wheels should be shipped today, Peter said. Got a picture. They sit at 1420grams (D50CU-33 T800, cx-ray, inhouse hubs, brass nipples). Would've been under 1400 if I went alu nipples, but I detest them.

Everything else arrived. I went with 105di2, but ordered lighter rotors, riro carbon cranks and ztto 32t cassette (around 230g). So i hope build would land below 8kgs. Will go with xtr pedals atm. And another thing, Chris appologized for delays and sent me par of bottle cages and spare rd hanger. I was just about to buy the cages on ali, good thing I didn't :)

Considering the weight of the frame (950 size M) and your quite lightweight wheels, woulnd't sub 7,5kgs be likely? Or is the 105 that much heavier than Ultegra. With your rotors and cassette I can't imagine it making much difference?

I do like the look. But 1052gr in size S is not that light.

I'm looking for a sub € 700,00 frame that is sub 1000gr in size M. I also prefer open mould over a blatant copy :) Looking forward to all the new 2025 frames that a being announced this time of year :)

It depends I guess.... If you always ride alone it could be OK, but if you do group rides, there will definitely be some real SL8's and it will be a little (or a lot) embarrassing to ride a fake...

Unless of course you put no specialialized/SL8 logo's on the fake bike and beat them at every KOM on your bike that's only 1/10th of the price of theirs :)

hi friend,Stay tuned, a adapter mount is in the works.

That looks really interesting, but how do you align the mount if you turn the bars (they can be moved a bit, inward/outward from centre)?

6
I would like to buy these. However, only if there is a good Garmin mount available. Also I would like a BTA solution (adapter/mounting plate). Will have to suite a Giant Trinity.

7
I't like to see better pics of the headset-spacers. If these look clean, I'll be buying this. Too bad it looks like a copy, but an aero-ish leightweight bike that is kinda goodlooking is what I'm looking for. It's this or the Velobuild 268. The TanTan might be better.

Also interesting is the option to buy this with the gravel bike 201 from TanTan and only pay shipping once :)

Now I need to wheelsets :) Leighweight road for 28c tires and a wide gravel wheelset (both from one seller). Guess Elite is the way to go :)

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Hygge Aero Carbon Frame
« on: October 16, 2024, 07:31:54 AM »
So my frame arrived and I got busy assembling the bike.

The frame came in a slightly crumbled box but the content was intact and not damaged, wrapped in what they called silk foam. I spent 20 minutes unwrapping it  ;D

Frame itself is beautiful, well made, inside is smooth with no visible overruns or sharp edges. Brake mount surfaces are faced but could be better. I'm using Juin F1 hydro-mechs and rear caliper did fit (160 mm) by the skin of my teeth. Cutting the fork steerer was a bit scary experience because I never cut carbon which is easy to plunge into with a sharp saw.

The pain in the arse was guiding the cables through the handlebar and there's where I lost most of the time. You need to sort 4 cables (I'm using 105 mechanical) and then guide them through narrow spaces. After lot of struggle, I helped myself by guiding the old shifting cable from the opposite side and it served as a guide for the cable housings to easily go out. Other parts went pretty easily. Still need to do the derailleurs, tighten everything up with the torque wrench, do some adjustments and do the handlebar tape.

The whole bike came around 8 kg's with pedals and bottle cages. Feels solid and light. Had no chance to try it yet but sitting on it feels good in terms of my body position. I'm coming from the endurance geometry (Trek Domane) and I'm almost 50 years old so I left the full stack of spacers (which are aluminum and the C ring is a new design) so I'll be able to adjust the handlebar height eventually if I need to slam it furthermore. Can't wait to ride it but have a busy schedule these days.

Cheers!

Looks really nice. Would probably go for that color on my next roadbike as well. Ultegra Di2 would be lighte I guess.

One thing, if I would have to nag, the logo's of the tire should line up with the valve stems :)

Picture from ironman event

Cool picture. Really love the bike as well! Clean lines, think it should do well against frames like Trek Speedconcept, Cayon Speedmax, etc.

Just 3 observations:
- I think a giro Aerohead will save you minutes (almost for free, sell this one, buy new one). Also, your helmet looks bit small.
- I would switch to rear facing BTA bottle placed as high and far back as possible
- race without socks, easier to put them on in T2. Saves you some seconds and you start the run with fresh socks

Looks very similar to my TanTan X38 but with a different fork and saddle mount clamp. Not sure if that's good or bad because I didn't really enjoy the way that frameset rode.

The overall outline looks the same, but I like the intersection fork/downtube better on the Scott Foil or X38. On the other hand, this seatpost/sadleclamp looks better than on the X38.

Also, you say you didn't like the ride of the X38. I remember you posting (somewhere) that you were gonna give the X38 a second chance, because I think you took it apart quite soon because you needed the groupset for another build. Still planning a second build of the X38?

(I'm asking because it's high on my rader. Can't really decide between Ican A40, the TanTan X30 of the Velobuild VB-268.... I think the last has the most positive reviews, but I like the looks of the other better)

Thanks for your comment. The chameleon pops quite a bit in the sun, just so you are aware. The other one in blue chameleon does as well, probably a bit more disco vibe than expected, but you only live once :D

My friend is 180 cm, long torso. Stack of the frame is pretty aggressive as you can see by the number of spacers he needed to get a comfortable position. I have bought af 56 cm for myself (187 cm).
The wheel set weighs 1420g without rim tape, tolerances seems very nice, end caps are a really good snug fit. The standard ones are fairly wide compared to others, 21 internal and 28 internal, so would not be a bad choice as well, and you can get them a bit deeper than the 45 mm's also. The build proces was not that hard, but probably way worse if you are to route mechanical gear. Cut the steerer 6 mm below the stem. Did all wiring without a routing tool and didn't really need it. The handlebar is the standard one, yes. 400/100 mm, but the reach seems a bit longer as the hood-position extends a bit further from where the stem "ends".

cheers

Thanks for your reply. I'm 178cm with shortisch legs (nothing extreem). Normally a bit between 53/54 framesizes. Wondering what would be the best option for me. I do like my stem slammed (doing TT on the TT bike as well, so used to 'being low') an dislike a short seatpost (purely for estetics) :)

First of two 268 builds now complete.
This one is a chameleon silver in size 54 for a friend.

Groupset: Shimano 105 Di2 R7150, 11-34, 50/34, 172,5 cm with 160 cm rotors.
Saddle: Ryet Carbon 3D-printed mesh-saddle
Wheels: Elite Edge Gravel 45 mm (internal 24 mm, external 31 mm)
Tyres: Continental GP 5000 in 28 mm (meassures 29,5 on the rims)
Tubes: RideNow TPU (36g each)

Complete build 7,75 kg w/o pedals.

Thanks for the post. Looks great! Even considering this color now over pearl white (with black custom decals). I think I need a 54 frame as well. Could you let me know how tall your friend is (i know, not the only relevant metric).

Also got a few questions:
What is de weight of those wheels? I think I'll get wheels less wide (lighter?).
How hard was the build?
Is this the standard handlebar from Velobuild?

Kind regards!

Thnx Pat! Not a great fan of the color, but really looking forward to your build, especially regarding the routing of the cables around the headtube/fork.
