Is that just the paint cracking? Looks like the rivnut coming loose. Happened on my 177, a good shop should be able to fix it pretty easy. Mine charged $25.

I thought it was paint at first but there is a little shard of carbon coming with it.

Noticed my FD mount was a little loose. Took it off and noticed this.

Is the plug pulling out from the carbon?

Color looks dope! What color is it?

Matte metallic blue.

I sent them a pic of someone else’s in the same colour.

Here’s mine.

Was able to put 100k on it before the weather got cold again. (this was seconds before I noticed my saddle slipped backwards lol).

Brakes took a shake down ride to bed in and then re-adjust to stop rubbing but the facing seems fine.

Its possible the brake caliper mounts are not faced perfectly and result in the caliper not being in the same plane as the rotor. It's also possible your calipers aren't retracting properly. Are they rubbing the entire way around or just in spots?

Some diagnosing:

When you try the loosen calipers -> squeeze hard -> tighten, pay close attention to what happens to the caliper as you torque it down. There should be no movement other than getting closer to the mount. If you notice any twisting or yawing as you tighten down that could be a sign.

The other thing to look at it how the rotor rubs on caliper. When it rubs is it rubbing the entire width of the rotor or just the tip? If you are sure they are true and just the edge of the rotor rubs, it may further indicate it needs to be faced.

Should be able to find a bike shop to do this for you if you think it needs to be faced.

Heres what I found out:

1) My steerer tube is cut a tad too long likely.

2) The velobuild compression plug was slipping as I torqued the top cap down, causing the top cap to hit the top of the plug and the stack to not have enough compression.

My fix was to get a $19 FSA compression plug, these things are great since you can adjust how deep the plug sits and you should always be able to create room to compress the stack. Worked perfectly with a bit of carbon paste.

For future builders the proper order to tightening everything is:

1) Tighten compression plug to 6-9nm.

2) Push down with your hands on the bars and make sure all headset alignment pins are fully engaged

3) Tighten top cap until headset is fully compressed and no play remains.

4) Tigten stem bolts

Hey what order should I be tightening the headset/stem? Got looser after a ride or two.

Should it be:

1) expander plug
2) fit stem and spacers
3) tightening top cap to compress spacers/stem
4) tightening stem

I don't want to go through all the posts again, I'm just considering whether to order the set with a separate stem and handlebars...

Did any of you manage to integrate the parts supplied by Velobuild with hydraulic brakes and mechanical shifters without causing problems?

I used their integrated headset. From what I can gather they've made improvements and the headset play typically isn't an issue anymore.

I ran the SRAM HRD lines through it fine, but if you were doing mechanical shifting + hydraulic brakes I think it would be very very tight.

After some luking and reading all the thread... Finally order a 168.

It will be dress with Rival/Force AXS bits and probably a Ryet 40mm wheelset.

I hope to be on the 8kg edge... Let's see!

Similar setup to me! Force/Rival defintely seems to be the sweet spot right now price wise.

Here you go.

The c clip is identical just without the knobs so not going to bother taking it apart for a pic.

Got my VBR 168 mid-jan.

C clip comes without those knobs now, and the compression plug comes with both the aero shape cape and a round cap. The aero-shaped one seems different than the two bolt style I've seen in other people's pics. I ended up just using the round cap because it fit flush better.

No headset play, cut my tube about 4mm below the hand bar clamp.

Hey guys,

For the front thru-axle, I feel like the one that came with my frame might not be correct. Its the right size but the I'm not sure about the where the bolt head contacts the fork.

Basically it sits flush on the outside of the fork, directly on the carbon. However, it has grip serrations on the bottom of it so if you twist it in it basically grinds the paint off and maybe eventually the carbon? Is this correct or should I ask/buy a different thru axle.

For #4 did you lube between the outer diameter of the bearings and the frame? I've had that weird creaking front end before on one of my Specialized bikes and I solved it with an extra help of grease.
