First off--I don't own superlight wheels, though I have seen some of them in person, and ridden them

I want to be careful here as well, since a lot of this comes down to usage and preference, and I feel like Light Bicycle, Zen, DFS, and XMCS reps might call me out for these comments. It's my opinion that the H Works and similar hubs out there are not a higher-end product; they are more of a price-point product, and the ones designed to be lightweight are trading on stiffness and, ultimately, durability to achieve what they are doing. Rather than comparing these ultralight wheels to Roval or Enve, I feel like a more appropriate comparison would be to Extralite. What these companies have achieved is extraordinary--they have pushed the envelope for ultralight wheels and lead the market in that regard.

That said, you still need to take a step back and ask about the cost and if you were to make a wheel that was designed to stand up to race conditions, whether those are a cat 5 crit or a pro road race, if you would still design the same ultralight wheel. My observation about my wheels, which I believe are DFS XL rims on R3 Hubs, is that they are more flexible than I would like. Not in a way that is noticeable on the road, but clearly more flexible than my Roval or Ascent wheels. They did go out of true--something those wheels never do / did despite more mileage. Its my belief that for my use, the R2 hub would have been a better choice because of its geometry. With wheel stiffness resulting from multiple factors, including hub geometry, spoke count, and spoke type, it's generally hard to call out a specific property. However, between the R3 and R2 hubs, which have the same lacing pattern and spoke count, I believe I would have benefited from the R2 design's better bracing angle and more equal spoke tensions.

Compared to the 20/20 carbon spoke wheels I have seen, I believe my R3-based wheels are noticeably laterally stiffer, which would be going in the wrong direction, as I personally would prioritize stiffness and reliability over even 200g.

As for why I like the THR Industries Hubs, I think they are among the few (Chinese or not) that are comparable to the Enve Innerdrive, Vision PRS, and Roval Aero hubs in terms of helping build a high-performance wheel.
