Re: Airwolf YFM-026 - 1 month in I also have this frame and first impressions are good. Just finished it last night but still waiting on some final bits before the bike is “complete” (saddle, pedals and new seatpost clamp).

I agree about the imperfections in the frame. The upper and lower bearing areas on the head tube looked a little more ropey than expected. However, fitting their own bearings and setting the preload, it all worked without a hitch or any notchiness. The frame was wrapped so well and arrived in 6 days to the UK but I just went for the black option with the intention of perhaps painting it in the future.

I am British and ride the South Downs way often as I live near the start in Winchester. This rig is designed to be a very light hardtail. I use the bike to commute hence the G-Ones and rigid fork but will Chuck on a RockShox Sid when I’m on the downs and some Mezcals. For my typical rides around the new forest too, this current setup works great where the terrain isn’t demanding.

Bike as it stands is 7.63kg and was a blast to ride home last night! My only mistake was that the E13 XCX cranks use a larger offset on the chainring whereas I have a standard 3mm offset boost chainring. I didn’t check that in advance.  This means the chain line isn’t quite right so there is a bit of noise to the drive train however, it is still rideable and shifts well but I will sort that out to prevent chain from wearing too much. I am using a rigid fork from trifox. It looks lovely and is very stiff. If anyone else out there goes for it, keep in mind the post mounts will need facing as my calliper was not parallel to the rotor so took a little longer to sort out.

All in all, I am very happy with this bike. I’m am 180cm tall and the large frame is just a smidge too big for me personally. I can make it fit but I have always found myself on the cusp of medium and large frames. I’ll ride with this for some time but may eventually swap components onto their medium frame instead.

Picture won’t upload for some reason

Re: Chinese Carbon 29er Pic Thread. Airwolf frame with a host of nice parts. Really enjoyed this build and have a few more parts to arrive from Tune before the build is “complete”. Bike currently at 7.63kg.

Re: Airwolf YFM-026 - 1 month in So I am 3 weeks into riding this frame and have done just over 1000 miles all told. The most “extreme” riding I’ve done is in the New Forest UK, not very extreme…!

Anyhow, have developed a hairline crack between the upper exposed seat tube section where it curves onto the downtube. My seatpost has plenty of length in the frame so I’m disappointed in this frame right now. It’s a shame because it looks lovely and rides great too.

Have contacted Airwolf this evening so will see what there customer service is like

Re: Airwolf YFM-026 - 1 month in
:o a crack at the top / seat tube junction and now a snapped chainstay! I really hope your issues are an anomaly and are addressed quickly. I washed and checked mine over the weekend and so far its fine, but interested to hear how your chainstay snapped and how your warranty claim goes with Airwolf.

Took a long while to hear back to be honest and i gave up. I emailed the seller on Aliexpress who are Airwofl directly. Then i had to email someone from Yaoflying. I didn't hear back for 5 weeks and kept messaging the seller intermittently to let them know I hadn't heard back. I did eventually get a reply from Beatrice at Yaoflying which was on the 20th December (so about 2.5 months later-ish).

They asked I send the frame back for inpection. As often with these items, the return shipping, and namely hassle, outweighs the warranty benefit. So i just scrapped the frame.

I am waiting for my Koga World-traveller to finish being built and this was a project to have fun with in the meantime for a few months. I'll probably move the components over another time with an ICAN frame or similar.

Re: Lewis Bike (Trickstuff 2 & 4 piston clones) I will order some tonight and see what they're like and report back on their weight and performance. The hose looks like a shimano BH90 so easily replaceable if a problem occurs and there are some lighter options on the market too (provided they use this hose).

I shall be going for 2-piston in silver. Thought I'd add that since they look sexy.

Re: Best and worst overall quality/value components/tools/gear from AliExpress? My list of recommended:

E
  • lita One seatpost.
    Dodici handlebars.
    Ridenow tubes.
    RhinoWalk bags.
    Uno stems.
For carbon rims: Deerobust & Bitranz.
    Random 3M Heli tape stuff.
I've had some carbon cages for about 8 years now which are not like the XXX ones but have lasted many miles and still going strong.
TiTo Titanium. Had lots of bolts from them as well as a set of forks and bars and they've been great.
Gararuk derailleur cages and pulleys. Honestly, cannot see or feel a difference between these and genuine but are less than half price, they're practical and look better imo.
SQLab inner bar-end clones, same weight, half price, seem solid.
    Yuniper and powerway lefty hubs.

Not recommended:
B
  • ar tape, inexpensive but most i've tried feel shite and rubbery but not in a good way, just a cheap way. There will be good ones out there of course.
Clothing generally, some items I liked but the sizing is whack and varies too much from one place to another.
OG-Evkin (maybe not spelled that right) carbon forks. I always need to face the disc brake mounts and each one i've had has varied in the lower steerer diameter a fair amount. I give this product a meh. It does the job once you overcome the initial shortcomings.
    Airwolf
Highball Clone - Seattube split after about 400 miles of road riding. No after care and, although it was not a huge expense, it was still a wasted one.

Re: Recomendations 27.2mm carbon seatpost Elita One are basically the undisputed kings for a lightweight, good value post. I think most people on here have used them. I've had a few and they've all been great considering you can pay A LOT more for other big name branded ones for a similar weight.

Re: ZTTO Slab cranks I'm personally not a fan of the branding all over them and they're much cheaper than I expected. I won't be trying these but would be interested to see how they hold up once a few people put mileage onto them.

Re: Lewis Bike (Trickstuff 2 & 4 piston clones) The more pics i see of these the more tempted I become but also want to know what they're like in the real world. You're pictures really make the all-silver set looks pretty tasty. Keep us posted and weights and performance!

Re: Lightweight XC Carbon Boost Wheelset? A lot of shop son Aliexpress will build what you want and are very responsive.
I recently got two sets from BITRANZ. Not sure why I chose them really, i think mainly due to their good communication - it gave me some faith.

Both my sets are 30mm internal, 29er carbon. One set using pillar wing spokes with goldix hubs. Weight 1308g price £420. Other set was £790 and used CX Super spokes, goldix rear hub and yuniper front hub. Weight 1218g

"Cheap" is always subjective so better to state a quantative value over qualititive.
