Author Topic: Help me pick! Thrust FR11/br-b011 vs tantan tt-x2. and Is the fr11 a copy?  (Read 1647 times)

Queen of Skulls

So let me preface this as, I am building medium level rim brake bike for myself and get some experience before I jump in with both feet with the  R-218 to have a disc brake.  I have some body not being proportional issues.  Short legs and long torso.  30-31 inseam. and I am 6ft tall.

I saw this frame. Its got a long reach and short stack. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2251832766893306.html
I been going between it and the tan tan tt-x2. Which would be ok fit just need a longer stem, but its the one of the cheapest frame out there. So I am not out a lot of money if I do something wrong.  tan tan is a lot more well known than thrust as a brand. Also the coolness of the aero bike and cheapest option vers a slightly  better fit and more money.  Its hard to pick.

I been trying to see if its a copy of anything. Maybe you eagle eyed know it alls can tell me.

What frame should I go with? should I do threaded or press fit bb? What are you thoughts?

I don't have any experience with either of those frames, and I don't know which would be a better fit for you.

The Thrust frame looks like it uses a standard round seatpost, while the Tantan has a proprietary one. It would be easier to find a replacement for the Thrust if needed.

Threaded bottom brackets are pretty easy to work with, so that's what I'd go with. You typically just need one inexpensive wrench to install and remove.

Well I have 800mm of usable leg give or take. I plan on 170mm or 165mm cranks. so that leaves me with 630mm about, so with a 520mm seat tube. that leaves me with about 110mm left for seatpost and saddle. So around 5 inches. 6 ins with a 500mm seat tube.

So for the tan tan that gives me about 380mm reach and 550 in top tube length.

The thrust is going to be about 400mm reach and  575 mm in top tube.  So about inch more for my torso...

the seat post is an worry too.  but it will but the same for the vero build 218

the tt-x2 weight is probably 1900g and the thrust is about 1600g... give or take.

And I would be worried about delamination on the bb for threaded but the press does offer a challenge and a bearing press which you need for the front tube bearings anyway. right?

the maximum tyre size is 23c accoring to the aliexpress page of the thrust frameset. i personally wouldnt buy a new frame that doesnt allow for at least 25/28c. but preferably 30c+

You don't need a bearing press for fork or bb to install. You don't need a press for a crown race on the fork.

The only time a bearing press is needed is to remove press fit bearings. Using a press is faster to install the press fit bearings but not needed.

All you need to do is buy threaded rod, some nuts, and washers larger than the bb. I use 2 washers on each side of the bottom bracket for thickness. 1 washer per side may bend as pressing. This method works same as bearing press. The only issue is there are no cups to quickly center everything up. So you need to tighting up each bearing side slowly. Make sure the washers stay centered and don't slide off centered. Don't need the threaded rod to rub and damage the bearing.

I didn't catch that. 25 mm tires are a deal breaker for me. I'm a larger rider (205 lbs) on rough Southern California roads (San Diego) so I'm grateful to have my 32 mm tires. I was on 23 mm before this bike, and the ride was very harsh. (And I'm currently renting a bike with 23 mm tires, and that's a hard ride too.)

These frames might not be as compliant as the higher end ones, and you don't have much exposed seatpost either. I personally think you'll have a lot more fun on wider tires, especially if your roads aren't the greatest.

Well I have been riding on 25mm. I can go for comfort on the 218 build. disc brake build. also the tan tanlist almost all of the tire size as 25. which is weird because a number of frames that can clearly handle much higher. So I cant trust these listing to be actually correct. as far as we know  they just source these frames.

...so I'm grateful to have my 32 mm tires...

Joining you on this. My rims are 32mm and 28mm GP5000S at 4bars fit nicely on them.
This is so comfy, and I can't notice any performance drop in my usual group rides, even the fastest one.
And after long rides I don't feel as sore as before.

Wait what is your wheel set up?... I am reconsidering the whole Idea of a rim brake build first get the feel for everything  then adding a disc build and just jumping in feet first on the a 218 or 168 disc.  Or if someone else has a better build. because I either love or hate the 218.

Sorry, I missed that. I'm disc only for years, and 32mm is only possible with them I'm afraid.
