Picking frame for "race commuter"
« on: July 25, 2023, 05:58:25 AM »
Hey everyone,
I have a bit of a weird (?) commuter bike challenge: We just moved to the suburbs and I now have a flat 20km-each-way commute on mostly pretty great tarmac, ~2km are well-packed gravel through a park. I have tested my three current bikes, and it is crazy how much time I am saving with my Canyon Ultimate CF SL (36min avg. on 25mm and aero wheels, 22sp Ultegra Di2) vs. the Cube Nuroad AL (42min avg. on 40mm semi slicks, 20sp Tiagra) and the Cube Cross Race C62 (40min avg. on 32mm cross tires, 11sp Force).

Now, it won't be summertime in Berlin all the time, so I want/need to build a racy commuter that takes 32mm tires and mudguards through proper eyelets (no SKS race blades pls). Which frames would do the trick? The vast majority of frames with fender mounts are comparably heavy gravel frames and they are increasingly extremely wide with up to 50mm space. The one I like the most right now is the LightCarbon 071https://www.lightcarbon.com/new-carbon-gravel-frameset-with-integrated-stem-system_p171.html at 1050g in size 55. I like the Carbonda 707's looks, but it's some 2-300g heavier already. I don't want to spend 2k on a Cervelo Caledonia frame, although I really dig it! CAAD13 could be an option, too.

Don't need the latest bells and whistles, planning to do a semi-weight-weenie build; got some Farsports Kaze wheels with 46mm depth coming my way, have plenty of carbon seatposts and handlebars in my basement, thinking of going 1x12 Rival eTAP or plain old but trusted 2x11 Ultegra.

Grateful for your recommendations!

Caad13 and LightCarbon LCG071 are great options.

Hambini just release a "reaming" of the LCG071 over on youtube. A solid choice for the money.

Yishunbikes G095D Speed Gravel might a solid candidate.
I don't have any personal experiences with that frame, just eyeing it for a while. But I've only heard good things about Yishunbike.
We have a topic on that frame here:

The manufacturer site for the frame:

My next speedy all-weather commuter bike with convenience items like fenders and proper lights will probably be a Workswell WCB-R-358. It has some nice details, like the fender boss at the top inside of the fork arch.
Unfortunately it's a bit heavy. A 54 frame is 1200g, fork 490g, seatpost 180g. With a nice set of fenders weighting 500g, I'm not sure if 150g extra really makes a difference though.

Thx for the hints. The Yishun one looks interesting, gonna reach out to them, too. As for the Hambini reaming, I'd call that perfect timing. He got the bike to 8.3kg without any crazy optimization, so I should be getting it below 8 easily on 32mm tires (without fenders obviously).

For the sake of closing off this thread, here's what I bought:

Focus Paralane 8.9 with 2x11 Ultegra, black; a nice barely used bike for just 1.500€. Gonna add my Farsports Kaze 45mm wheels, Hebie Rainline Premium mudguards, an OG Evkin 40cm bar, and boom...ready to go. Will add pictures once ready.

If your commute is flat, unless you're constantly stopping, and unless you're very light, consider deeper wheels than 45mm. If you email farsports you can customize stuff. Idk how the weatherproofing is on Novatec and Bitex hubs but you can save good money by avoiding DT swiss hubs. I ride in the dry.
You could also get 36 or 38cm bars (unless you're a gorilla), you'll be a bit faster.
Fast on the flat. And nowhere else.
