Shimano announces M8000 XT 1x11 with 11-42

Shimano announced XT 1x11 with an 11x42 cassette that will fit on existing Shimano style hubs.

It's classified as M8000.

Really is about time Shimano came out with something to compete with XX1, even though Shimano is sticking with a 11T cog at the bottom end of the cassette to maintain backward compatibility.  SRAM has been kicking butt in the 1X11 world for 2 years now.  However, SRAM has already trickled the 1x11 drivetrain down into lower price points than XT and nearly everyone with a 1x setup is using a wide/narrow chainring that SRAM first pioneered in the bike world.

Full XT 1x11 for less than $500 is a damn good deal compared to the price points you are going to get from SRAM and making it compatible with standard free hubs is a big deal. The new cranks look damn good to.

If I were building a new mountain bike today, the choice between a Shimano and SRAM 1x11 drivetrain would be more difficult.  However, since I switched from being a Shimano guy to a SRAM guy for my last two 1x setups, I probably will not switch back on future builds.

Nothing wrong with that, at the end of the day both Shimano and SRAM make products that will get the job done more than good enough. So you should be going with what you feel most comfortable with and what you think feels the best.

Saw the new XT today at Sea Otter. Looks real nice. Got to check out the 11-42. Nice looking piece. I bet Shimano is going to have a hard time keep up with demand in the first few months.

I saw the Praxis 11-40...that's a nice piece too.

I was at my LBS shop yesterday and the mechanic had installed a 42T cog on the shop owners Scott 710 MTB.  He was having trouble with the top jockey wheel hitting the 42T cog when shifting into that gear.  He tightened down the B-screw all the way to provide as much clearance as possible but it the chain would still rub the 42T cog if the clutch on the XT r/d was engaged.  The only thing he could do was not engage the clutch, that provided like 1mm of clearance so the chain would not rub.

However, the r/d did shift onto the 42T cog easily, just not enough clearance once the r/d moved under.  The only fix I could suggest was to check into the One-up r/d cage although the top jockey wheel would not change even doing that so you would need to somehow move the whole r/d away from the cassette by a few millimeters which would mean a different r/d hanger.  In the end I think they ended up putting the old 36T cog back on the cassette.

This is probably a case where if the rider wants a Shimano 1x setup with a 42T cog, he will need to upgrade to this new Shimano XT 1x11 offering.

Even if the guy was able to get the derailleur to not contact the 42T...the shifting would have been poor in the high gears. I sold my 10 speed XT because of that...I had it before the RAD cage came out. SRAM 10sp does not have this issue.

One possible work around is using a small spacer on the derailleur hanger. A thin shim can  possibility create the clearance needed.
