Headset bearings IP-036

Hello all

I finished my build Friday, and it rides really well  My only issue is the 1 1/8" top bearing for the headset - it does not fit really well (it´s loose). Bottom bearing 1,5" fitted fine, only the top is causing problems.

What make/brand bearings have you guys used with success?

What problems are you having?  Is the fork moving around, or is the bearing just a loose fit in the cup?   

Are you using the Neco headset?

That's no problem. Please read this message:

I think having read somewhere but can't find it back.
That integrated headset have a 45 degree conic cup.
When you tighten the fork, with the stem and caps, the headset bearings find their place centered in the cups.

Yes, I was also complaining of the same problem.  I would tighten down the expansion nut as tight as I could, then tighten the stem bolts and still loose.

MTB2223 suggested I check the bearing chamfer angles, I've not had a chance to do that.  Last time I took the headset apart I over-packed it with grease and it was improved so I have not bothered to check the bearing and cup angles.

Something is different with the IP-036 compared to my IP-057 hard tail though.  When I built the IP-057 I could easily tighten the headset to the point where it would interfere with turning the bars, basically an over-tight condition.  I back off half a turn on the compression nut and everything is fine on the IP-057.  With the IP-036 I have not been able to over tighten the stack.

I hand thought that maybe I did not leave enough space between the top of the steer tube and the shoulder on the compression nut, and the compression nut was bottoming out before it could take all the slack out of the headset.  However, when I looked at that possible condition it seemed fine.

If I get more time I will look at it tonight or tomorrow night.

I had a race face integrated headset I was going to use.  Installed it and there was play.  Used the Neco headset Peter sent with the frame and it cinched up perfectly and smooth like your Ip057 CD.  I'd recommend ordering one from Peter.  Shippng is pretty inexpensive.  I just ordered  the 142mm dropouts and thru axle and shipping was like $7 from Peter.  Peter got them here real quick too.

I am using Neco headsets from Peter on both frames.

The last time I had the headset apart, I measured the OD and ID of both the headset bearings and integrated cups, the lower bearing was perfect with nearly zero gap, but the upper bearing has 0.2mm of gap, which is the movement I'm feeling.  However, when I check the tolerances for the headset and integrated cup they are in spec, though at the larger end of the spec, which is the 0.2 gap.

DIdn't have time to look into this any further tonight but it's not high on my list as it doesn't feel as bad after packing it with grease.

Carbon_Dude - I also just tightened the expansion bolt pretty tight (to tight in my opinion).
