Gravel bike project
« on: November 02, 2023, 07:20:13 AM »
I am in the process acquiring new gravel bike and idea is assembly it around carbon frame from aliexpress.

Carbon frame bottom bracket T47

There is also older version of this frame but with press fir bottom bracket 386
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003550054274.html

From start I was thinking built it with Sensah groupset but two things I do not like: mechanical/hydraulic brake combo and most of the cranksets have aluminium spindle (which can and does brake).
So I opted to GRX400 version with crankset 46/30. Most expensive things are shifters. Hydraulic shifters from Sensah compatible with GRX (PRO HRD) are in similar price range.

Related with wheels I do not want anything fancy and pricy, so something like this:

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/shimano-wh-rs171-700c-disc-wheelset

I am also open for 1x11 or 1x12 combination but this do not look make big difference in weight/cost benefit.
Created sheet with some cost, weight calculations:

Would personally go for a push fit bb to avoid bonding issues with the t47 shell.

What kind of bonding issues you think?

Bonding issues are a lot more rare than press fit issues.

I'll prefer threaded BB over PF, be it good ol' BSA or T47. I'm seeing a lot of Chiner frames are BSA/T47 now a days (over BB386) from just a year ago and I'm glad.

My biggest issue is to pick proper bottom bracket which will suit that frame with T47 and this crankset

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/shimano-grx-fc-rx600-2x11-speed-crank-46/30

Frame is listed as BBT47 (86.5 mm)

I found something like this:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002440079867.html

But i am not sure.

Link does not open that item

You have to copy it and paste it in another browser window. Or on mobile press it and use the "open with aliexpress" option.

Ordered today crankset, cassette, front and rear derailleur. Shifters/brakes, wheels and tyres will be available next month...

Recomendations for carbon integrated gravel specific handlebar for around 100 €?

There are few I found out interesting:

I've just finished building up this frame (although it is the Tantan GR048 with integrated cables). The quality of the frame looks good, and the headset area is uniform. The bearings fit securely without being difficult to press in. The frame also looked good on the inside, very smooth with no crinkles visible. Assembly went smoothly, but routing a mechanical groupset through the handlebars would've been a nightmare; even with Di2 it was tight in some spots. The full build with bottle cages, computer mount and pedals is 9.1kg. With a lighter saddle and removing the many heavy screws in the frame, it should go down to around 8.9kg

I've only went on one ride, but first impressions are good. Due to the longer wheelbase, slack steering angle and low BB, it feels very planted and stable on gravel, especially on descends. On the road it almost feels too stable though, coming from a more CX based frame (GR029). Definitely less agile and slower turning. The frame itself feels stiff and efficient, and the handlebars feel much stiffer than my previous Deda Superzero stem.
