Cheap carbon clip-on aero bars with some adjustability?
« on: May 21, 2024, 03:32:25 AM »
Hi all,

I'm considering trying out aero bars. I'd like some with a bit of adjustability (I think both length and pad width?) since I don't know yet what position will suit me best. (I often ride in the aero-hoods position, so I should be flexible enough overall).

On AliExpress I could only find only:
- many sellers for the zero adjustability ones: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EushgcL
- these with 3 different shapes but no adjustment
https://a.aliexpress.com/_EQPYtUR
- various alloy models, none of which looked very good quality (many with glued on pads)

Do you know of any better options?

there have been a few posts on here recently about that. 1 guy on a vb 218 3d printed little rubber things to allow him to use aero bars, and he got a metal shop to cnc cut him a metal plate with various holes to dial his fit.
there's also another post about aero bars that clamp on foil shape bars, made of 4 clamping bits, from aliexpress. Maybe in the aliexpress good findings thread?
Fast on the flat. And nowhere else.

what kind of stem do you have?
if alloy, do also check ControlTech Falcon Mini stem-mount version.
it comes with with short U-bar, but it accepts 22.2mm standard aero ectensions.
thus you can get WinnowSports/Seraph 44° curved aero extensions ala ProfileDesign ASC43

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I use a 80mm Uno alloy stem, so the ControlTech Falcon Mini stem-mount combined with third-party bars sounds promising. I'll have to see if the stem dimensions are compatible. Not sure though, since the ControlTech website says they're only compatible with their own stems? But since it attaches around the stem tube it might work.

I have found this on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006263236960.html These would probably fit my requirements, at least the length and spacing is adjustable. I'm not sure how much you can adjust the pad position.
But they are designed for flat aero handlebars, and I'm using oval-shaped gravel bars from Ziino: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006624272139.html. I asked if they'd be compatible, and the seller told me he's not sure, so I probably won't try my luck.

I would not be clamping anything to a spot on carbon bars that wasn't meant to have things clamped on

In the end I realized my Ziino bars have just enough space in the central round section for me to add regular round-clamp clip-ons on either side of the stem. It's a tight fit but it works.

I'm using the Decathlon/Van Rysel clip-ons https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/long-distance-triathlon-handlebar-extensions/_/R-p-303804

I might try out the carbon WinnowSports/Seraph bars in these clamps later.

Update: the Ziino bars ended up cracking under the Van Rysel aerobar clamps, despite using a torque wrench. I'm replacing them with aluminium bars to make things easier.
