Yeah. I don't doubt there are some horrible Chinerellos out there, but its over the top.

There is a massive problem with fake stuff in "legit" distribution though. That got glossed over. If I buy a $25 xx1 chain on Ali I sort of know its counterfeit. That's as much on me as the seller. But if I buy a Shimano chain on Amazon and get shipped a fake, at full price, I'm pissed. And that happens more often than you'd think. Its particularly severe with auto parts.

I'm willing to take risk with my own stuff, and have no issues with "replica" parts where the original isn't patented or otherwise legally protected.

However, I wouldn't buy a used SL8, Madone, s5 etc on a social media site now at all, as they're rife with the replicas being sold to third parties as the real thing. Again, its one thing to knowingly buy something you know is a clone, another to be hoodwinked.

And the number of people posting on regular forums that Chinese parts will kill you is laughable. I recommended a hylix sl8 post to someone, a known good part, and someone replied that they hoped I had dental insurance. That's just stupid.

And as far as "child labor" etc goes, good grief. To the extent that's a problem, its a crime, but many legit brands are participants and are marking the stuff up to full boat.

Wow. Hylix is one of the oldest chinese parts I know of. Super trustworthy and proven. Yeah...someone called me a slaver for recommending a pretty reputable Ali part. I guess they feel better paying the middle man to deny reality.

Amazon probably has a lot of counterfeit product in its system along the lines of someone buying an XX1 chain from Amazon and returning the bogus one bought from AliX to Amazon.

^^ that's one way of swindling but not the only one and probably a miniscule percentage. No, I think the bigger issue sellers themselves sending counterfeit stuff to Amazon's inventory. I read some articles how genuine stuff gets lost in sea of counterfeits in Amazon.

The video was painful to watch.   Blah-Blah-Blah.  They could have conveyed the exact same information in less than 10 minutes.  I had to sit through 4 sets of ads because the video was so long.   This video to me just seems like so many other videos these days where the intent is to sell ads, and try to get as many viewers as possible in order to make money.  The actual information content is about 3 minutes worth of news.  3 thumbs down out of 5.

I stopped purchasing chains many years ago online from Flea-bay and Spamazon, that are SRAM or Shimano brands.  The only brand I have purchased from Aliexpress is KMC.  I haven't receive any apparent fake ones to date.

I bought an $11 Shimano HG54 10 speed chain from AliX and it did indeed rip past 0.5% in just 2 months (probably <200 miles) so I returned it and got a full refund. But then I've also bought other chains and brake rotors from AliX and they've been completely fine. So it's a bit of a lottery, and now I try to stick to specific sellers that I know are okay.

Also, as I'm learning, music equipment. Not just "fender" guitars or any other big brand name, high-value items that seem to have an obvious market for fakes (but also equally easy to spot by someone who knows what they're looking for). No, I'm talking about run-of-the-mill tools of the trade like microphones and cables and things, as I've just learned. Not even high-priced boutique stuff, like $1000 mics. I'm talking $100 Shure SM57 mics (and many others) are now commonly counterfeited! It's unsettling because these mics have been in production for decades and they're ubiquitous, so they're commonly available on the used market. It never seemed like something I would have thought to worry about if I picked up a $50 used mic that I might actually be buying a $50 counterfeit. But, here we are...
