AM831 vs others???
« on: August 21, 2021, 01:50:23 PM »
Hi all,

I currently own a Roscoe 6, Farley with Bluto fork and Xtrada 7.  Looking for my first FS and I'm considering building one from scratch.  The AM831 group buy is very interesting and I'm considering it.

Can anyone give me a pros/cons of the AM831 vs others? i.e. vs FM936 or FM909 or other popular FS ones you guys mention alot?

I'm not a seasoned pro by any means.  Just started this spring TBH.  There's a single tracks trail within 15 mins of me with green/blue/red/black tracks and I'll be spending most of my time there.  I may go on some DH trails within a couple hours of me maybe once or twice a year.  Please recommend what would make sense for my needs.

Much thanks!

To start with you should decide what trails you enjoy and what type of riding you want to focus on. I would not build a bike for downhill once or twice a year that you will otherwise ride on singletrack.  The three frames you listed all fit different categories, with a little overlap on the 936/909.

AM831: all mountain, 150mm travel, should be great on descents but still climb alright
FM936: 'down country', 120mm travel, aggressive cross country and light trail
FM909: modern cross country but still 100mm travel, likely fastest on singletrack

Personally I'm on the FM936 b/c the terrain here is relatively flat with occasional elevation and it works great for all of it.  I've ridden this bike in CO and UT, including the Whole Enchilada, and survived but those areas would be better with more travel.  If I lived in the mountains I would definitely consider the AM831.

Awesome...Thx Zilcho! I think I will jump in on that AM831 group buy then.  Appreciate it.

Is there a reason FM1002/1001 not in the list?

FM936: 'down country', 120mm travel - website says 100.  Can you link me to the one post here among hundreds where this is tested/determined to be 120mm ?

I got about 117 mm when I measured mine.  I degassed the shock, removed the rear wheel and used a jack to push up on the rear axle. Didn't push it too hard.

The entire FM936 thread discusses this.  When I said 120 I was referring to front travel, as a lot of people building that frame are using 120mm forks.  The rear travel is debatable but it works for almost everyone with a 42.5mm rear shock that should yield 115mm +/- rear travel.
