XC Frame opinions
« on: January 04, 2022, 08:25:31 AM »
Hoping for some help with a xc frame choice.

There are a lot of good looking ones out there, trying to find something light and reliable with 100mm of rear travel. I ride hard and like to to go fast.

Below is what I am looking at and my thoughts. Would love any opinions.

This is my order or preference currently:

Tideace FM829
Looks like an evolution of the XC029. Lighter, no one seems to be talking about it? Is it new? Geo and weight look good.

Carbona 936
Looks pretty tried and true, 1960+-50 is good, bb is pretty low though. Broken frames concern me.

Carbona 909
Super light, looks kind of fragile to me around the top tube shock mount. no long term ride reviews yet.

Light carbon 911
Head angle is 68, maybe a bit high. Seem to be well liked.

DIY carbon F100
Emailed and never heard back. Do they still exist?

What do you think?

I ride the SL FM936 and I like it a lot, but the pedal bob and low BB can be a drag. Carbonda SL frames are definitely high quality and as strong most major bike brands. Frames breaking from high speed impacts is totally normal, I wouldn't worry about that. I would go for the SL FM909 as the linkage/shock placement will give the best modern XC experience.

Thanks, that’s good info. Might move it up the rankings.  Does anyone know the bb drop on the 909? I could not find it and assumed it was the same as the 936?

Somewhere I found the FM909 BB drop as 45, same as the 936.  I calculated BB height at 334 with a 120mm fox 34 sc fork.

Nice, thanks. Hmm, seems like the bb height might be the only downside given what I am reading. Anyone know anything about the 829?

All I know is there 831 seems to have a lot of issues, probably wouldn't recommend being an early adopter of Tideace/Haedeli frames after looking through those threads.

It is the same for 936 and 909. It's 45mm according to geometry chart.
Regarding long term for 909....70km dont count I guess  ;D.. even if I go 1000km..I am flyweight and will never bring the frame to its limit.
The rear shock mount does not look fragile to me.  It has nice curved shapes,  no edges or kinks. Frankly,  when it arrived i thought that the "wing" looked pretty large.

Sounds like the 909 might be the way to go. What is the deal with the headset? I have never used this before? Looks like it’s for internal cables? It’s not tapered? Hoping it does not need a special fork. It says: 1-1/2"*1-1/2" ACR

You may also want to look at Trifox MFM100 and ICAN S3, both of these were on my short list, have 100mm rear travel and seem to be very reputable - Trifox has been sending their frame to several YouTubers for them to review.  Hambini, in addition to being very entertaining, gave very positive reviews on carbon frames from both manufacturers.  All that said, I ended up going with Lexon Riot frame, with 110 rear travel.  You can see my write up on that frame and my build on the Lexon Riot 10 thread.  The short story, I just finished my build and have had one ride on it and I'm happy with it so far.

No you use just common tapered forks. I have a SID ultimate with 120mm travel.
You can go integrated  then you will get a dust cap suitable for that or you do the routing just as usual - the frame provides all the openings. The 1 1/2" size on the top is needed for the extra space for the hoses.

I chose 909 and not 936 because of the 2 bottles in the frame.
I hate taking a backpack for water.
My frame is S and allows 2 750ml bottles .. you may have a look on the 909 thread.

Thanks for the headset info. I will check out the trifox again, I cut it earlier on due to weight. 909 starting to look really good. Going to read that thread though from the start.

Here's the Hambini YT link for the Trifox review - a different frame but it speaks to the Trifox quality.

Here's his ICAN frame review:
