IP-057 or IP-033 (LTK-023) + Beginnings of a build log

Hi All,

I've been out of the bike scene since around 2008. I recently stacked on a few kgs, and have been meaning to find a good way to exercise. I decided that I'd get back into cycling.

Around a fortnight ago I took a trip to my LBS and choked at the price of some of the mid end hardtail 29ers. I've always wanted a 29er, and figured now is an opportune time to purchase one.

I had a look at a Giant XTC Advanced Carbon, and was impressed by it, apart from its price tag. That's when I stumbled upon chinese frames.

I decided I am definitely going to build a carbon chinese bike. So far I have managed to source:

  • Most of an 2014 XT Groupset (Double 40/28t 175mm cranks, M786 2x10 FD, Shadow+ 10spd M786 RD, M780 shifters) for $250AUD, ripped straight off a brand new bike (score!)
  • 2012 Rockshox SID XX 100mm forks for $175 AUD

These will be going on whatever frame I end up buying. The question is - what do I buy? The bike is mostly going to be used for commuting, + local paved bike paths. I may also take it out to some of the local bike tracks again in time.

I'm so stuck as to what to get for the frame (and what size?)- my main criteria here being price. I'm happy to spend money, but I do also really want to keep the whole build sub $1500.

I am 188cm tall. I have a 34" inseam, which is about 85cm.

Any pointer would be awesome!

First off, welcome to Chinertown!

I would recommend the IP-057, mostly because that's one of the frames I have.  An LTK-023 might be a little less expensive but I have no experience with that model.

For your height, I would say either a Large or most likely XL for you.  If your LBS carries Scott, you could take a seat on a L or XL Scott Scale to get a better idea of what would be proper sizing for you.

When choosing a frame, please take a closer look to the fd that can be used on the frame. For example, the ip-256 can only use a shimano xt fd direct mount, but it cannot use a fd with a clamp. Fot the ip-057 you can use a fd with a clamp, no direct mount.
The ip-057 is a well proven reliable frame and cheaper than the ip-256. There are more frames on the market, please do some reseach.

I'm 186 cm tall and riding a 19" IP-256. It fits very well.
