Bottom Bracket 386 Install/Remove Tool
« on: July 31, 2024, 02:36:24 AM »
I have just had a frame delivered from Dengfu that includes a bottom Bracket (unbranded of course).  I need two tools so I can tighten the BB up (each side) but having trouble either identifying what type of bb this is or specifically, what tool to buy.  Attached is a picture of the bb.  If anybody can help me locate a tool that would tighten this BB it would be appreciated.  This bb and the frame bb is a type 386.  Edit - I am communication with Dengfu but it is proving difficult so far.

it's a simple tool you need. You can order it on aliexpress, or just google bb386 tool. In principle you only need one of them. Basically you screw both cups into each other making it being pressed into the frame.

Brilliant - thank you. Do you think this is what I need?

I am happy with 16 notch and 49mm diameter but unsure about the different 'outer' type on these bottom brackets.  As per 1.jpg and 2.jpg.

Will these '386' removal tool fit both types.  The images in the url above so type 1.jpg whereas I have 2.jpg - hence I'm nervous to buy.

that looks like a PF T47, it looks like a wide cylinder for a 386, and narrow? Either way, these press fit that screw together are very easy to install, you just need to buy the right tool, which is always cheap using AliX. There are lots of standards, but you can find the tool for each of them.
I recommend Liqui Molly 3312 on all the interfaces, that stuff is magical to avoid / remove BB creaks.
When you will want to remove it, you will need a BB removal tool. AliX also has it, the new versions have oval shaped things to REMOVE the BB. Typically with these "2 parts that screw together PF BBs", when you remove it, one part unscrews and pops off, and the other part is stuck in the frame. If you want to be civilised, you then use a BB removal tool.
Installing and removing PF BBs is good for the brain. you have 50 different bits in the kit and you got to find the right combo to achieve the desired goal.
Fast on the flat. And nowhere else.

Yes - from what I have read this is a T47 bb - the one I have screws together so it has a variable width (3.jpg).  My issue is really what I have said above.  Will that tool fit with this bb?  (Out of interest what does the PF part of PF T47 refer to?).

Are you planning to buy a new BB? If you buy Token Ninja, it will come with its own tool - that's what I used on my BB386 frame. But yours is T47 or BB386? I thought you said BB386 earlier but later T47. They are not the same. Fundamentally, T47 is oversized version of good old BSA bottom bracket that simply threads into the frame. BB386 is non threaded, press fit type. T47 and BB386 are not interchangeable.

Instead of getting tools for every BB type, get all in one tool. Those are not the greatest as far as reliability goes and a bike shop will never use it but for home use they are fine -

Actually, looking in more detail I'm not sure these three tools are the same.

MUQZI 12 16 Notch Bike Bottom Bracket Tool 39/41/44/46/49mm Install Removal Wrench for Shimano SRAM Chris King FSA MegaExo Etc   (the one that is hand held)

MUQZI 5 in 1 Bike Bottom Bracket Tool For For DUB BSA30 BBR60 MT800 BB93 Bottom Bracket Cups Lockring Install Removal Tools  (the one that has a torque wrench fitting)

and

ZTTO 5 in 1 Bottom Bracket Tool TL fc24 fc25 DUB BBR60 BB93 Mega evo BB52 BSA30 BB386 Installation Tool Remover Repair key Cups

My bb definitely has a 16 notch outer ring and as near as dammit 49mm diameter.  So I'm guess the right one is the MUQZI 12 16 - although it would be nice to have something like this but with a torque wrench fitting.  Thanks for your help on this one.

Apologies - you can see my confusion here.  My frame is a 386 but I'm not sure about the type of bb I have.  Thank you for your suggestion above.

Understood. The BB that you have is thread together type of BB that threads into EACH OTHER rather than into the frame. Traditional BB386 bottom bracket is just two cups that you have to press on each side by using a bearing press like tool. The thread-together is a way to counter squeaking noise that many people complain because of press-fit type of BBs e.g. BB30, BB386, PF30 etc. So companies like Token, Wheels mfg, and few others found out a novel way out. Instead of just having two cups press fitting into the bike frame, they developed a metal tube/sleeve with threads to sit in between two press fit cups. Now instead of just press fitting your cups you have to rotate those cups to fit into that metal sleeve (rather than into the frame, because your frame still does not have any threads). Basically its a trick. You have threaded bottom bracket inside a press fit style frame.

Hope that makes sense.

Now, you say the OD of the cups is 49 mm with 16 notches. That Muqzi all-in-one tool will fit on it (the 39-49mm side). Don't want to add to confusion but T47 and BB386 outer diameter is same (48.5mm). See photo of my T47 BB with that Muqzi tool. From the ones that you listed, any tool with 49mm OD will fit too.

Whether you get torque wrench or plain, doesn't matter. You have to get the one with 49mm OD.

OK, I think I can clarify a few things here.  My frame has a bb386 (dia 46mm) bottom bracket with a 86mm shell.   The actual bottom bracket I have is (I think) a T47 type that has internal bearings (this explains to me the 'thin' outer compare to those with external bearings).  The outer of my bb, that you fit a install/removal tool onto, has 16 notches.  As detailed in one of my post the bb is in two parts that are screwed together - I guess this so it can be fitted to a number of shell types/widths.  Hope this helps.

Coffeebreak - Thank you.  I was writing my last post while you posted yours.  This has been quite a journey for me.  As you said, it boils down to the 16 notches and 49mm.

No worries. Also remember a few things because you seem to have confused T47 with BB386.

1. You cannot have T47 BB install into a press fit style of frameset. T47 needs threads present on the frameset just like age old threaded BSA bottom brackets. The only way you can *somehow* install T47 in BB386 is if your frame is metal or has metal insert in the BB shell and if you tap that metal with T47 coil. Highly unrecommended and not a job that you can do at home.

2. There is no PF T47 bottom bracket simply because its impossible. It makes no sense. If frame is T47 it will have threads. If it does not have threads it is not T47.

3. The OD matters. ID does not matter for tool selection.

That is very interesting - I had not come across T47 until this thread.  If you look closely at my bb it does not have a thread to screw into the shell - it needs to be pressed* in.  I believe I 'press' in the drive side first and then insert the non drive side by screwing it in until it hits the shell and use one of these tools that I will buy to continue screwing in the bb.  Until it mates with the bb/shell.

* I've pressed in press-fit bottom brackets before but interestingly this bb has two ridges on each side of the cup that is pressed into the shell.

Ridges are there possibly to have the tightest fitment. My WM thread together BB does not have ridges on it but its WM, so the measurements on it are damn near perfect compared to no name Chiner BB.

I usually follow WM's guides for installation. It works on other brand BBs too. Either that or Hambini.
