Any Direct Mount Rim brake frame suggestions?
« on: March 15, 2025, 07:27:50 AM »
As the title says, I am interested in building a rim brake bike but specifically needing a direct mount option.
I know it's a dying breed of bikes but interested to see and hear suggestions of an affordable chinertown rim brake option even if it is from the past 5-10 years.
Looking to build a sub 6kg build with an Ultegra R8000 direct mount Groupset and a climber set of wheels, it will be along side my Velobuild VBR 268 Aero bike
Thanks and regards!

Am I late to build a rim brake bike at this point? I am looking at the SL6 direct mount rim brake frame and was wondering was there ever a close configuration china/oem frame that was released a couple of years ago?

I was recently considering doing a similar build, but shelved it for now.
A clean front end an internally routed cables was something I was wanting.
This Velo build is 860g for the frame so you could get it pretty close. It’s an endurance geometry though.

SP Cycles and light carbon also have some decent options.

Good luck! I live in Florida so don’t have a huge need for disc brakes, except for on my race bike.
I, too wish there were more light rim brake options.

Lightcarbon has a bunch of DM rim brake frames, none of them particularly light. Other than that I can only think of fake Pinarello rim brake frames, companies like TanTan, Hygge, Spcycle and Velobuild have lighter rim brake frames but no DM brakes.

edit: by chance I found https://www.speedercycling.com/Carbon-Road-Bicycle-Frameset-SC-R48V-_p347.html which is light and has DM brakes. That may just be the one

yes I did see this option though but I want to have the direct mount rim brake as I really believe that the brakes would be stronger compared to a single mount bolt as I am a bit of a chunky fella too, at 85 KG at the time being. SPcycles which model frame number are you recommending? r088? yes I wouldn't mind an endurance frame though

Yes I went through their sites and I can see most of the direct mount options from Lightcarbon is the Aerostyle chainstay direct mount style option.
It is also heavy though at 1000gm. Maybe it is now a lost or an expensive cause to build an SL6 inspired bike after all?

Did I miss out on a direct mount SL6 clone or inspired style frame a few years back here at Chinertown forums?
I don't see any SL6 related posts though via Search option here..

I make one- habanero.bike.  It’s Ti with direct mount in front and medium reach in rear. Holds up to some 32mm, all the 30mm tyres.  Easily as popular as our gravel bike, rim brake and direct mount brakes are fantastic.

honestly if you want a lightweight rim brake bike just get a second hand sl6 or 2012-2015 cannondale supersix

Elves do an aero direct mount frame. I have one with campagnolo DM brakes and the stopping power is superb.
If consisering this make sure you look at the sizing on their chart rather then '54' or '56' size. Its a compact geometry.

Double that. Could be better ride quality and possibly in the same price range. Also consider older Trek Emonda, it has direct mount brakes.
