Re: Velo Build R-099 Build
Also intending to run 60mm of spacers below the stem.  More than VB's recommended 40mm.  I guess best option is to use Colnago's 100mm expander in this case to be safe?  Anything I should be aware of?

Did you order the extra spacers from VB? How much did they cost?
I think 60mm spacers should be fine. I have seen Giant Propels and Orbeas come from the factory with about similar or more spacers so the rider can adjust stack based on their own bike fit.

Hope the image for 099 clamp specs attached are useful.
I'll be changing my clamp bolt also.

The bottle cage bolts are the generic once. The cap of the bolt will depend on the design/space around your bottle cage screw holes.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-177
I noticed the 177 seatpost slips down about 1cm after long rides. I switched from carbon to alloy seatpost so I can tighten the clamp a little more but it still slips (even after using carbon paste etc).
It doesn't slip on the indoor trainer though.
Wondering if anyone has similar issues.

I really miss the old school circular seatpost clamp design. I never had slipping problems with that.

Looking forward to the VB zero offset 099 seatpost so I can revive my 099 as a backup bike.

Update on 177 slipping seatpost issue;

My VB177 seatpost clamp came with a M6/35mm hex socket cap bolt.
I swapped it with the M6/30mm hex socket cap bolt from my 099 seatpost clamp and my seatpost slipping issues seam to have disappeared after over 100km of testing.

Not sure of the physics to why this has solve the slipping issue but I am sure glad because it feels like a brand new bike.

Re: Velo Build R-099 Build The Dolan Ares is a 099 frame with a different fork and seat post + UCI certification. Interesting how the bike industry works :)

Looks more identical to the Workswell WCB-R-268.

Slipping Seatpost Slipping seatposts are a nightmare!!!

Just thought to drop a thread on this topic so riders can vent and also share tips on how they've solved it.

Here are some tips that may help:

- Carbon paste (did not help in my case).
- Take out the clamp and clean with degreaser then add some lube to help with the slide lock action.
- Check the clamp bolt specs / length (helped in my case).
- Use fiberglass mesh tape (big help in my case).
- Change the clamp (maybe the clamp is bad in the first place).

*** Maybe only buy frames with traditional circular clamps and skip on proprietary seatposts and the coolness of modern frame designs   :-\

I wish there is an open mold out there that has done integrated seatpost like the Giant TCR Advance SL then we can stay away from clamps altogether. So far I only know of the LTK007-ISP but it is not a disc frame.

Re: Is it possible to customize frame geometry?
I was daydreaming about building an e-bike. I see there are some off-the-shelf frames available, but there are some modifications I'd like to make. Has anyone ever requested a change in geometry? Or even more radical, submitted a custom design to be fabricated as a one-off?

Within this forum a few of us who own the 099 frameset requested and contributed for a zero setback proprietary 099 seatpost and velobuild opened a new mold for that. We paid for the new mold to be made and also paid some more for the actual manufacturing of the seat post (was a fair deal in my opinion. Many thanks to @RDY for organizing).
I think it is possible to make modifications to existing frames etc. They'll need to make a new mold for your modifications. As a one-off it is going to be pretty expensive though.
For example the 099 seatpost mold alone cost $500 to make. Chris said we could contribute $350 from a few of us in the forum. This was besides the actual cost of manufacturing the seatpost.

TanTanCycling or yishunbike may offer the kind of service you are looking for. Most of these companies will require a certain minimum order quantity before they'll consider the project.

Re: I Am Slowly Getting Fed Up (Crybaby Rant) I think at this point the best thing for us in this forum is to come up with our own frame and wheels design that solves all our issues and then get a manufacturer to make OUR frame and wheelset.
One Open Frame To Rule Them All (OOFTRTA). Then hold the manufacturer accountable for quality and warranty services.

Re: ICAN A22 frame, request experiences The ICAN A9 and the TT-X21/VB099 where compared to each other right about the same time. But I went for the 099/TT-X21 because of the price. Also the A9 look too similar to the Merida Reacto 4000. I wanted something that did not look like a copied frame from first glance.

Check out the ICAN A9 thread. I think only one major problem of which ICAN responded well to the customer and resolved the issue.

https://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,3027.0.html

VB seems to have relatively lowest price among other open mold dealers (If I'm not mistaken). Also it feels safer to buy open mold frame from a dealer that has multi-threaded followings in a forum such as this. It is just unfortunate that recent purchases and customer service reports from this most popular dealer in the forum has been really bad.

On Alibaba.com you can pay extra on the platform to have an inspector go and inspect your items at the factory for quality and make a report with videos or photos e.t.c. before your items is shipped to you.

In our context I would advice anyone who want to buy from ANY dealer from now on to request for photos and videos of all angles of the final product before it is shipped. That way we can avoid this problem where you receive your purchase and go "What the f*$&#*@K!"

The problem with any open mold frame purchase is the final check for desired / expected quality before it is shipped to you. At least you have the choice to accept minor imperfections or totally refuse the item before it is shipped.
Any problem after you receive your purchase will then be narrowed down to warranty issues.

Re: ICAN A22 frame, request experiences
I don't think paying for an inspector is worthwhile for single purchases. As someone said, vb is always the cheapest. You can't expect the best build quality when you are choosing the seller only based on price. They are the cheapest for a reason. They have to cut costs somehow, and it seems to be in QC. It's up to the buyer to decide if paying the extra few dollars to hope for better quality. The extra dollars do not guarantee perfect qc, but the odds are increased.

Yup, it does not make sense to pay an inspector for a single purchase. I was referring to larger quantity purchase from factories.
That's why I said for our context we should request for photos of ALL angles of the frame before it is shipped.

Re: Advice on aero frame for tall rider 6’4 / 193cm From personal experience, TT-X21 / vb099 size 56 or 58 with or without the zero offset seat post depending on your current bike size / setup.
This is assuming these dealers will take quality control seriously.

ICAN triaero A9 has a long user thread on this forum and the frame looks good and stable in the large size range.

Other notable mentions i.e. frames I don't mind to try but no user reviews yet on this forum:
- ICAN A22
- SEKA Exceed
- Tantan TT-X34
- Lexon  Mission aero frame (the white and black aero frame).

Happy hunting!

Re: VBR 218 or VBR 099? In the open mold world I'd go for the bike with looks that score lower on the "copied frame" spectrum especially when the highly copied frame is not the only option.
Also vbr099 seems to be a lighter build between the two frames hence closer to an all-rounder bike.

Random point from this weekend issues; vb099 has a hole under the BB area that helps to drain water out after a rainy ride or major bike wash. My 177 for example does not have this hole making lots of water to be caught up at the BB area. Not sure if vbr218 has this water drainage hole underneath the BB area. Little stuff like this saves your BB for longer.
