Re: Soft-tail Titanium 29 Looks great, can't wait to see the final build!

What was the design process like with the flex plate? Do they use a standard thickness, or is that adjusted based on your weight?

Re: DT 240EXP hub clones Goldix, Venfort So I just received my Goldix 240 hubs yesterday. Very fast shipping, only 10 days to California. (I ordered from the Goldix store on Ali)

The hubs look really nice and the rear hub feels smooth. However, the front hub feels notched, as if one or both bearings are damaged. I reported this to Goldix and they suggested "adding more lube oil" which I don't think is a valid solution.

Given that the factory bearings aren't great to begin with, should I push them for replacements, or just go ahead and order higher quality replacements? I'm still waiting on rims and need to order spokes, so no hurry yet.

Re: Advice on where to buy a frame - dengfu/ican/velobuild ? Carbonda is also pretty well regarded. There are some lengthy threads for their frames on here. They have an aero frame and an endurance frame on their website although I don't have experience with either. I do have one of their gravel frames (CFR707) and it's really well made. They are a bit pricier than some of the other options but there haven't been nearly as many reports of problems as with some of the others.

Re: How I painted my frame
I only kept partial records of my painting costs, but I estimate it was about $170 USD. I don't know what Carbonda would have charged for a scheme like this buit it probably would have been similar or slightly more.

The paint was the most expensive part:
Primer (2 cans): $21.50
Paint (6 cans): $55.08
Clear (2 cans): $41.99

I didn't keep a log of the tape or sandpaper since I already had much of that. I probably used $15 to $20 worth of tape (basic blue painter's tape and Tamiya masking tape), and maybe the same amount of sandpaper? The polishing compound was maybe $17, and I had the bottle of car wax lying around.

I'm not sure if I would do it again. If so, I would probably simplify the scheme a bit and pick the paint cans out in person to get a better match!

Re: Finally trying clipless pedals.... Glad you're having a good experience with them! I ride SPD-type pedals on road, mountain, and gravel and really like them. My first attempts involved a lot of falling over though!

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc! They are lying about what they are selling and hoping that most people won't notice the differences. I think that should be reported. For every buyer who catches this difference there are a bunch who won't and don't get the item they paid for.

Re: Frame Sizing Confusion!
I'm just wondering if anyone has any wisdom to share about how they analyzed the mountain of geometry data as it relates to Chinese Carbon Fames.

My approach was also to build a spreadsheet. I calculated the handlebar position for each frame, including the stem length and height, and played around with that to get my desired fit. Fit ultimately is where the handlebars are, and you can get the same fit on different frames with different stems and spacer.

This method let me know what frames would work for me with a reasonable stem and spacer combination. There were a number of frames that would have worked, so I was able to use other criteria to chose between them.

Re: DT 240EXP hub clones Goldix, Venfort It appears that the anodizing on the front hub was causing the issue. I tried screwing in the lock ring without the rotor and it became difficult to turn well before it was screwed in all the way. I tightened and untightened it a few times and was able to get it farther in, so I think it just needed to clear the threads. I was able to tighten the rotor down, but I'll put a paint witness mark so I can see if it works loose.

No issues with the rear hub.

Now I just need to wait for the longer valve stems. I'm very eager to test out my first wheels and see how much of difference they make!

Re: Traditional cable routing options???? The Carbonda 707 can also be purchased with traditional routing. It's probably about the same price as the 696 but the geometry is a bit different. Tire clearance is probably a hair less than the 696, but I'm running 700x50 mm tires with a bit of clearance. (These measure 51 mm / 2.0" and I wouldn't go any bigger.)

I'm happy with mine - it handles anything from smooth roads to slightly technical singletrack really well.

Re: Gravel Bars (Carbon vs Alloy) (Flared vs Regular) I'm a fan of flared bars for gravel as well. I have a Whiskey alloy bar, 26 cm wide, 24 deg flare on my CFR707 and love it. It's very comfortable and I like having the extra width in the drops.

I picked up a cheap alloy 42 cm 16 deg flare bar that I'm going to put on my road bike at some point. The non-flared drops just don't feel as comfortable anymore.

I've never ridden carbon bars. The name brands are very pricey and it's a very high risk component to experiment with...
