Component Deals & Selection / Re: Recommended chinese dropper seat post?

I had good luck with a Trans X dropper too. They actually make many of the PNW and other droppers. They're a little bit cheaper for the same posts.

Metal Frames / Re: Another Seaboard GR02
« on: February 03, 2024, 03:01:37 AM »

I finally completed my Seaboard GR02. I built it up as a cheap commuter using parts from eBay, AliExpress, my parts bin, and hand-me-downs from upgrading my road and gravel bikes. This was an incredibly easy frame to build up. No issues with alignment, and cable routing was simple, even without any guides.

It's 1x11 with a 40T ring and 11-34 cassette. That's not much of a gear range, but it's about the same as the gear range I use currently on my commute. (I already had the cassette.)

Without pedals, it came out to 21.6 lb / 9.79 kg. I spent a little over $600 building it up.

The Sensah brifters shift pretty well when pared with a Shimano 105 derailleur. I'm not enamored with the Sensah ergonomics because it I have to be more deliberate when shifting to a larger cog than I do with my Shimano drivetrains, but it works.

Brifters: Sensah SRX Pro
Derailleur: Shimano 105 R7000 GS
Cassette: Shimano 11-34
Cranks: Shimano GRX FC-RX600, 40T
Brakes: Tektro MD-C550
Wheels: DT Swiss E1850 Spline
Tires: WTB Byway, 700x44 (currently tubed)
Saddle: WTB SL8 Comp
Seatpost: Carbonda (from my CFR707)
Handlebar: Easton EA700AX, 42cm, 16 deg flare
Stem: UNO 110mm
Tape: Blackburn thick EVA covered with Rocktape kinesiology tape (Experiment - I had this lying around. I Like the feel better than the Blackburn tape, but I'm not sure how it will hold up. I commute without gloves.)

I looked at this frame but went with the Seaboard GR02 for my budget commuter build. The headset cable routine on the IZIP was a dealbreaker for me. The Seaboard is a good deal lighter too, and there are more color options.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: chinese carbon saddles

Just took my Elita one saddle out for a 20 mile gravel ride and it’s the most comfy saddle I’ve ever used! I know saddles are a very individual thing, but this one fit  me just right.

Check it out! $24.58  50% Off | ELITA ONE Carbon Saddle MTB/Road Bike saddle Super Light Leather Carbon Cushions 96g
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mM5KQWC

I have the same sale in wide on my road and gravel bikes and I love it.  They've been holding up well so far so I might try one on my mountain bike as well.  It's one of the lightest wide saddles I've seen,  and they are well made.

I checked the tire clearance today. I have WTB Byways in 700x44 that measure about 43 mm wide on my rims. There is about 8 mm clearance on the front but only 4-5 mm on the rear. The chainstays are the tight spot. I'm mostly going to be commuting on paved roads, so no mud concerns, but I'd go a hair smaller if mud was a possibility.

My frame arrived yesterday - exactly one month to California. It looks great - I love the orange, especially in the sun. The paint is really good, only a couple of very minor blemished (a couple flecks of dust, a little bit light on the inside of the dropouts) but overall very smooth and even. The welds look nice too.

My XL/56 frame weighs 1976 g, including the headset, axle, and bottle cage bolts. The fork is 501 g including the axle. This is only about 320 g heavier than my Carbonda CFR707, although that included bolts for all of the mount holes. (The Seaboard only has bolts in the two bottle cage mounts on the inside of the triangle.)

It will take me a while to build it up given all that's going on this time of year but I will post pictures when I do. It's a budget build with parts I had and cheap eBay and AliExpress finds.

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Re: shipping times from aliexpress
« on: December 06, 2023, 12:56:47 AM »
It seems AliEx is now using a private courier at least here in Southern California. All my 11.11 sale items have mysteriously appeared on my front doorstep and usually in the morning. Usually no status updates (besides processed through US customs) until delivered. I'm receiving fewer packages via USPS and more through private courier.

I think they have a warehouse somewhere in the Inland Empire (near Los Angeles) and many small sellers are using that as a base for their US distribution for things like wheels and frame sets. It's probably just cheaper for them to send a driver out in LA as opposed to processing things through the postal service.
That's been my experience here in San Diego as well. I usually get an email after it's been left at my doorstep but not always. The labels appeared to have return addresses in China though. I suspect the sellers are packaging them and sending them to an AliExpress warehouse in China, and then they bundle them and ship them over before disrtibuting.

Everything I ordered on 11/11 has arrived except for my frame. The tracking has shown it as in the US for a while now, so I'm hoping it will be here any day.

I can also vouch for the CFR707 quality. No issues building mine up. If I were doing it again, I would go with this frame again.

Maintenance, Mechanics, & Tools / Re: Derailleur and chain length

Yes, I figure I'm 25% more likely to get a good answer if I post in two places!

I will start with a few extra links. The GRX derailleur should be able to take up a lot of slack, so it might not be too critical (I'm running a 2x11 with an 11-46 cassette on my gravel bike, same rear derailleur.)

Maintenance, Mechanics, & Tools / Derailleur and chain length
« on: November 13, 2023, 11:12:20 PM »
I'm replacing the Shimano 105 derailleur on my road bike with a GRX. It's a 2x11 with 11-34 cassette. The GRX cage is longer than the 105 cage. Will I need a longer chain? The chain length calculators I've seen don't factor that in, but it seems like the chain would have a longer path with a longer cage...

I saw that but was a bit hesitant because they have only a 91.8% review, and it dropped a bit over the last few weeks. Plus they didn't have the orange color that I wanted.

If you're open to aluminum frames, Tsunami has some options on AliExpress for pretty cheap.

I just ordered this frame for a cheap commuter build using a bunch of parts I have lying around. Only $375 including tax and shipping (to the US) thanks to the 11/11 deals.

I've been dreaming of a lugged carbon frame for a retro style hardtail build, and then this popped up:

Not exactly the same thing, but still really cool to see something so unique on AliExpress. I wonder how well the bonds will hold up? That was the week point of those old lugged carbon frames. If it was my size and cleared more than a 23mm tire, it would be tempting.

can anyone else report on the tire clearance? I was planning to buy Continental Race Kings 2.0 but am hesistant now after reading this. Carbonda lists the tire clearance at 50mm, so theoretically they should fit.
I have 50mm Maxxis Ramblers on 24mm rims, and they measure right about 2" / 51 mm wide. There is about 5 or 6 mm clearance on the sides of the tires on the frame, and maybe a hair more on the fork. I wouldn't go any wider unless you know you will never see mud (2.1" is probably the absolute max with little extra clearance and perfectly true wheels.). I replaced the fender bold at the chainstay/BB junction with a flat head bolt to make it a little easier to get the wheel on and off.
