Re: Titanium Gravel bike: PYTitans build thread Nice build, hopefully I'll have something to share in the next few months. Who did you but the brakes from? I'm also in the market for some GT-F's.

Re: Groupset News To add to what acedeuce802 stated... RD's are also spec'd w/ a min cog size. I'd be cautious of using an 11t min cog spec RD with a 9t small cog unless you have prior knowledge of it working. In some cases an after market cage can be swapped onto a given RD to make it work with particular cassettes.

Total capacity refers to the amount of slack the cage can take up.  For a 1x, it's max vs min cog, a 9-46t would need 37t capacity.  For a 2x example, an 11-32t with 50/34 chainrings would need (32-11)+(50-34) = (21)+(16) = 37t as well.  What you need to find out is the max cog size.  I would guess that since max cog size isn't listed (in the descriptions I looked up) and it's usually paired with 11-30t or 11-34t cassettes, that it's unlikely to work well with a 46t max cog.  I would rather find a rear derailleur with same pull ratio than use a big drop bracket.

Re: Groupset News Sram and Shimano are pretty conservative when it comes to spec'ing their components. That said, the RD scenario you cited was most likely a part that was optimized for 11t min cog that would then obviously work with a 12t. It's probably not the best example of something working outside its intended box.

I'd agree that 2t is a fairly small change in larger cogs but the difference between a 11t and a 9t is 22%, the difference between a 40t and a 42t is 5%. The difference in diameter between 11t and 9t is not "very small" relative to the size of the parts.

AFAIK, nobody makes an RD spec'd for 9t but manufactures like E13 knew what they had to work with when making a cassette that was designed for a 10t min. Like I said above, Sram and Shimano spec things conservatively enough that pushing things a little bit usually works out. For example, you can typically squeeze a few extra teeth in Shimano's capacity spec as well as usually get away with an extra tooth or two on the max cog size (sometimes by using a longer B screw).

One of my concerns with the scenario in question would be the amount of chain wrap on the 9t cog. It may work OK but wear could be a factor. That wear may or may not be acceptable depending on the individual. The cassettes that would allow such a scenario definitely aren't cheap.

Re: Aftermarket Shimano brake pads Not what you asked but...
For Shimano brakes I much prefer Shimano branded metallic pads. They're still kind of pricey but not terrible if you shop around (Amazon). The metallic pads last practically forever so they kind of pay for themselves in a sense. I've seen people blow through various new organic pads in nasty gravel races. I'm not sure why the durability of metallic pads isn't more well known.

Re: Super Boost Discussion Sounds like you know a thing or two. Only you can determine the personal financial feasibility end of such a deal. Are you on the Facebook "Bicycle Wheel Building" group. Over 27k members worldwide. Several current/former industry types contribute. You MIGHT be able to find some interest there. Hell, if you can't sell it there then I'd consider that good reason not to pursue it. You might also try the Framebuilders forum. I've had a few discussions similar to ours regarding the advantages of Superboost on custom frames. You might run into some builders that are looking for the same solution you've found.

Re: LTWOO RX hydro sets
...I installed two original Garbaruk and two AliX sourced parts, I can see no difference in fit or function.
BR Chris

Thanks for the feedback. I have a a Garb cage that I bought to convert a medium cage M8000 11s RD to a larger range 12s, works as it should. If I need to do something similar again I'll go the cheaper route if I can.

Any one know if that cage is compatible with deraileurs other than the advertized RD-RX812?

The different cages are pretty specific but there are several versions. Check Garb's site to see what they offer and then use that info to search AliX.

What RD are you trying to mod? Sometimes you can simply switch the cage to get more range. For example, Shimano's GS, SS and SGS RD'a are all the same except for the cage length and cages are available separately. In the case of Shimano, you do need to make sure the SGS(long cage) RD will allow the cassette range you want to run, you can look those specs up on Shimano's site.

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc! quote author=00Garza link=topic=3910.msg44978#msg44978 date=1680644880]
Interesting. For $100 I might be willing to experiment if I don't like the ride of my gravel bike after I get it built up. For those with a more keen eye than myself, is this more inspired by suntour, rockshox, or fox gravel fork?
[/quote]

They don't specify an A-C for that fork but I'd estimate it to be about 450mm. IMO that won't play well with most gravel frames.

...Fox's fork is 430mm IIRC. That's manageable but still about 20mm over the longer range of forks is designed to replace.

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc! Looks like Framed now has a a carbon road frame avaible. I got the CFR696/Basswood frame in the mail on Friday, looks great. Shipping was $30 and tax was another $30. The road frame is the Mallorca, $320 after discount, more astute members will likely be able to identify the open moid parent. Currently avialable in sizes 54, 56,and 58.

Re: Sales coming up, how do I find a GRX 2x11 Shimano GRX RX810 Lever and brake set? Well, I found him on FB and sent him a message. Said I knew him from eBay but heard from others knew he worked though other channels as well. Said we could both save some money if we didn't rely on eBay and asked for a shipped price on the shifters and brakes. He responded with $400. Depending on the auction, eBay price is right at $300 after shipping/sales tax. I guess I'll keep working that angle.

I'm in the US so Star Bike and R2 aren't an option. I've done a lot of business w/ R2 in the past and even made money reselling DT Swiss fat hub sets stateside. In the meantime R2 has quit shipping DT Swiss to the US, which sucks because I need a few things from Dt Swiss still. Neither Star or R2 will ship Shimano.

I've explored getting things shipped to Canada and then reshipped to the US from a third party but I couldn't find anything remotely objective to determine what it would cost so I have no idea if it would be worth it. If anyone has any thoughts on that I'd appreciate it. ...might have to make another post.

Aaron
