29+ & 27+ / Re: New 29+ Frame (CS-496) build

I can confirm the info from Carbon_Dude, in a SRAM Eagle Boost group, the "Boost" is taken care of by the chainring. The cranks are standard. You can give it a try or just replace the chainring with the Boost version.

$650, shipped! But they don't show the geometry, which is not good at all (shows they don't even know this is important!).

Welcome.

First... I'm afraid we get a problem here (well, I do - I'm just a member of this forum, not an admin). As you perfectly understand, confidence is the key when we talk about sending hundreds of dollars to someone we don't know on the opposite side of the globe. The 2 messages above don't help you. Your first message talks about building a website, a source of information. Nice of you, really. I'd love to get an insight in local fabs, see video, product reviews, interviews, better understand the ecosystem, etc...

Then a day later you turn into a vendor, asking blunt questions. In a nutshell this:
- How can we be better then our competitors?
- Which products do you want?
Honestly, I'd expect you to tell me how you are better and I'd expect you to use your incredible access to local fabs to identify the products that are better then the current offering.

And again, don't play this game. Who are you? Be clear, specific or trust will definitely be lost. If you don't know yet who you are (could well be!), take 6-12 month to think about it and come back when you have this defined.

After The Ride / Re: Where is everyone from?

USA is still a very nice country. One man is not USA. I get colleagues based in USA coming from all over the world, many seeking a better place for their kids to grow. China, Iran, Irak, India... yes USA is still a very nice place and I love my american colleagues. This won't change.

A bit more for me, about 4 hours to Finale Ligure, still not too bad  ;)

That was the view from my apartment, again... not too bad

I agree with this comment. At Chinertown we like the high value of buying direct in China, but we never support counterfeited products. I'm pretty sure that they don't pay any license to "Le Tour", and really who needs that logo...

Component Deals & Selection / 4iiii Power meter
« on: January 31, 2017, 04:05:14 AM »
After an extensive time (50h) and km (1700km) spent on the home trainer enjoying the benefit of power reading, I have just pulled the trigger on an affordable real power meter. This is for my road bike. Model is 4iiii, left crank based. I wasn't ready to pay $1000+ for the dual sided. Total damage is $390, shipping included. Not too bad.

I have made a lot of progress on my trainer over the last 3 month (over 25% increase of my FTP, that's huge!). I see a lot of benefit with structured training, based on power. It is a lot more reliable then heart rate. Sometimes I see my heart rate remaining low (when I'm tired), it's not a perfect metric. I don't want to lose power reading as I'll get back on the road in a couple of month.
Also, this will tell me my real power values, as the trainer-based power is just calculated estimates.

29+ & 27+ / Re: CS-496 Build / 27.5+
« on: January 25, 2017, 02:44:02 AM »
The quality of the bottom bracket of the 496 frame is very good. I did not have the option to select anything else but BB92, but now that I've seen how nice it is I would select it over a BSA BB. It is a BB with no aluminum shell and I believe that it is a better design. I've had the aluminum shell move on my previous frame.
CS-496 BB92 really feels solid. It's a great frame overall. The only other frame I would consider today is a full sus.

I don't know. I just bought the headset from CS. That's what I did with all my Chinese frames. Then I just replace the bearings, not the entire headset, (reading the reference on the bearings) with high quality (SKF, Enduro) when I need to replace (not often!).

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Please help me decide !
« on: January 23, 2017, 03:27:03 AM »
I would say that there are 3 levels of quality when it comes to Chiners (Chinese vendors):
- Low level: product quality is questionable. Those are the "unknown" vendors, found on ebay, aliexpress, usually with product that are too good to be true. You can make great deals or loose your money.
- Medium level: product quality is good, problem can still happen (true for big brands too), but don't expect any support in case of problem. This is the vast majority of "known" vendors.
- High level: product quality is good, problem can still happen (true for big brands too), but they will support you to fix any problem (might cost you some shipping though). There is a short list of vendors in this category.

I have bought my first 2 frames from low/medium level vendor (flyxii/xgoods) and I got lucky to get good quality products and no problem. But it was risky. Then I got my wheels and 3rd frames from a high level vendor (CarbonSpeed, sponsor of this forum) and found top level logistic support when needed. This is my only option now (but I'm sure there are other high level vendors). The higher the level, the more you pay (still a lot less then buying a brand product).

Note that I still use these 3 frames, very happy with all of them.

29er / Re: Nice video on brake hose installation
« on: January 13, 2017, 07:34:37 AM »
Nice but it does not apply to most Chiners frames. They usually come with a full length housing. So you push from the rear till it comes out in the front.
That's when everything works fine  ::)

Snow is here now!! I plan some rides in the snow like I did last year. Still haven't installed my Pike fork, I've been lazy as it also means that I need to rebuild the front wheel with the Boost hub.

Where was your visit in the Alps?

PS: I love your bike :)

My jersey/shorts have already arrived. I'm pretty satisfied. The size I've picked are "usable" even though I would have probably picked a smaller jersey and at least tried the larger shorts. I picked M (for both), while I'm 1.81m/70kg. I usually need size L. It would have been scary to pick a jersey size S  :o
As I mentioned I like my cycling cloth to stretch on me. The short does (slightly too much). The jersey does not (but still looks OK).

Quality of textile is not bad, the chamois is OK, colors/graphic are very good. The cut is not very good (shoulders are too large even though I get pretty large shoulders, short goes too high on the belly for a summer short). But heck this is 25€   8)

I guess I'll never cross anyone with the same jersey!

Looking at the wrap, which is typical for chiner frames, I'd say the crash happened when the frame was not wrapped. So there is now 2 options:
- It happened before packing. Which is really not honest from the packing guy. The guy might have dropped it and was afraid to tell anyone. BUT, it's good for you as such an impact is caused by a smaller shock then what you would need to cause the same damage on a wrapped frame. The damage is probably more localized in this case.
- It happened after unpacking. Don't shout at me  ::), I'm just calling options, not that you actually dropped the frame yourself!

So... if you know for sure that your frame can't have been dropped after unpacking (i.e. you noticed the damage while unpacking, not after some time where the frame was let alone with a kid or an animal in a position it could fall), you know for sure that someone at XMiPlay is not honest.
