« on: January 07, 2015, 05:23:08 AM »
Somebody mentioned that you might have to have a 90mm stem - at that point or 100mm, I would look at the next frame size up.
The popular set up these days is a short stem with wide bars.
Granted, this is only one thing in many to look at.

It is hard to beat the 036 -
a problem I am seeing with the FS is the TT is shorter for the same size hard tail frame.
the 036 has the option of a 21" frame to get the length if needed.
I think the 098 is the better looking frame but a 19" frame is 605 TT compared to 256 with a 620
You pretty much need to buy a size bigger in the FS frames compared to the hard tails.

Also, the Carbonal Titan has been changed:  photo in this topic:  http://forums.mtbr.com/29er-bikes/dual-suspension-chinese-carbon-29er-737952-59.html

it has promise with a 20" having a TT of 635 and 18.5" at 615

A good point somebody mentioned in chinertown, the spider seats allow road junk through to your clothes - just a thought.
Otherwise, if you google carbon bike seat in aliexpress you will come up with tons - here is a good one that has been pawned as a specialized seat(doesn't stay up long when painted that way):  http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Specials-NO-LOGO-Full-Carbon-Fiber-Bicycle-Saddle-Road-MTB-Bike-Carbon-Saddle-seat-Matte-3K/32235280880.html

BB30 is pretty easy to work
You need to get the clips set in first - a needle nose pliers work good for this
You can buy many different tools to help with the pressing of the bearings but all you need is a bolt and washers see here:
https://nuxx.net/gallery/v/acquired_stuff/salsa_mukluk_2/IMG_6908.jpg.html
here is a video of bearing on a bmx bike - same concept though:
http://www.vitalbmx.com/forums/General-BMX-Talk,2/How-to-make-a-homemade-bearing-press,310190
Next time I do it, I have purchased adapters:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/BB30-Bottom-Bracket-Press-Adapters-/291234751511
I had a problem getting them to go in straight - part of that was I did both sides at the same time.

I don't think I would take on drilling out your frame right away...being relatively new to building a bike, I would get it built and ridden a little before going after the frame with a drill and such.

The brakes are so good these days, most people's riding doesn't need more than 160 up front.
I suspect more people use their back brake anyways...like when one is going downhill it seems most tend to use back brakes even though one should be back over the rear tire and applying both front and back.
I run 160's front and back...at this time the front is plenty and actually, I don't want to be able to stop on a dime with the front cause I can stop on quarter with my 160.  180 would just make it easier to go over the front bar.
Ride the 160 and see if you actually need more up front.

Is that with Novatec hubs or something else?
Also, what spokes did you go with?

I thought the 2-piece design would help with heat and avoid warping....I can't tell so far, mostly cause nothing to compare to.
So far, they haven't been problematic like some 2-piece, the connection point kinda 'wollered' out and were essentially ruined.
The holes in the brake lanes of these, Ashima and others would have the benefit of cooling quicker to help with less metal for braking.
Otherwise, glad to hear they are working well for ya.
When does your race season or races start?

Actually, did get a response from Nancy of Hongfu: the FM336 isn't a 29er like I thought

the price:
FM336:$850/set

it is 650b all mountain bike frame, please check the geometry.
the fork is 150mm,BB is BB92.

it can be 135*9mm and 142*12mm can be interchanged.

That is the most expensive chiner to date, I believe.

So really, only 3 FS frames to choose from to date in 29er.

I started this because my 057 while good for racing is not as good for trails in the Austin, TX area.
We have limestone everywhere.  It makes for a rough ride and is wearing on my back...even getting out of my seat to use my legs as suspension.
Here we have another feature of these frames - I just buy a full sus and transfer most parts...won't cost another 2-3 grand to have another bike that I have to store and such.

Besides the two FS above there is some more exciting versions coming.
The 098 which is a Spec Enduro knockoff - except for minor changes and the ability to have a FD: http://www.ltbikes.com/products.asp?cid=186
and
even more interesting the Hongfu FM336:  http://www.hongfu-bikes.com/html_products/2015-full-carbon-All-mountain-Frame-309.html
a knockoff of Santa Cruz's Bronson or 5010
I sent off for info on the Hongfu and will put up more info on it.

29er / Titan or IP-036 or ?
« on: December 20, 2014, 06:57:18 AM »
Looking at full suspension 29ers, 2 stand out for me but they look to be different uses.
036 looks to be XC +  at 1950 grams
Titan is said to be all mountain at 1950 grams
The Titan looks 'burlier' and has the interesting chain stay to seat stay - is that effective?
Titan looks to be only BSA with direct style FD
Surprising they  are the same weight for different uses.

Do see the 098 also - but haven't sent off to get info.

That is heavy and disappointing as a % that is way off...your bolts aren't titanium are they?
My Quaxar discs were 69g for 160mm and 7g for the 6 bolts(titanium)
Your not talking about Shimano ice tech rt98 then - 140mm ice tech is 91g w/o bolts
Nice tip about the crank and bb.
