Re: SVChucko's Seraph/TanTan FM10 build - it lives! I finally set up the cockpit yesterday. It was no surprise that I had to shim the OneUp dropper post. The FM10 design has a shallow seat tube, and at the full 150mm extension, the saddle was just a tad too high. But I picked the OneUp because it had the shortest insertion depth at 150mm, and because they claimed you could adjust the travel in a couple of minutes without tools. They weren't lying. I only needed to shorten it by 10mm - one set of shims - so I still have plenty of room to drop the saddle in the rough stuff. I set up the handlebar angle and the controls much like my old bike.

I was a little disappointed to see that the saddle-to-bar distance was actually shorter than my old bike. I had a bike fit done last summer, and the fitter thought the bar was too close on the old bike. OTOH, the old bike was designed around a 100mm stem. The new bike has a 70mm stem at present, which I thought would be too long. The grips on the 16° SQLabs 30X bar are in line with the steerer. I might try moving the saddle back on its rails.

It's a gorgeous day here in Silicon Valley today, so I took the new bike to a popular local preserve for a shakedown ride. And had a blast!

Only a couple of minor issues came up during the shakedown ride. The seatpost creaks pretty badly in the frame. The headset developed a little bit of play, no surprise, and no big deal. Some of the helicopter tape I put on the chainstay had come loose and was buzzing against the tire. And (oops) I put the rear tire on backwards. ::) I wish I could blame the bike for my (lack of) fitness, but I didn't really notice the weight of the fatter tires.

The ZTTO 11 speed cassette, Sensah CRX shifter and derailleur, and low-end SRAM 12-speed chain combination worked great. I had no issues with shifting. We'll see how that changes as it wears. No issues today with the Goldix rear hub either, thankfully. I'm still leery after the rotor bolt threads stripped in the front hub, and after all the reports of Chinese star ratchets breaking down much sooner than expected. The 16° bar seems to suit my hands. The Ergon saddle seems kind of firm, but then I haven't done much riding lately, and I know I won't notice it after a few weeks.

Overall it rides a lot like my 2007 vintage 26er. This is both good (no major adjustments to riding style) and bad (expecting the spouse to say "You spent $$$$ for a bike that rides just like the old one?!)"  ;D It did seem a little easier to control on downhills.

I'll want to go over everything with a fine toothed comb before taking it for another ride.  And I'll cut down the steerer tube by about 20mm. I'd left it long just in case, but the Cane Creek Helm II fork seems to work fine.

I may build a set of 29" wheels and trade off to see if the extra width of the 27.5" tires makes up for the lower bottom bracket. The trails I rode today had been groomed recently, so there wasn't a lot of rough stuff to provoke pedal strikes.

Pictures attached as promised. I went with a stealth matte black theme because I'm lazy, and I suck at painting. ;D (I was the kid who always had glue thumbprints on any model kit I built.)

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Great looking build, for a first time you did really well, very smart component choices! How is the ZTTO BB?

Thanks!

The ZTTO BB seems very well machined and a quality bit of kit when in your hands. It was super simple to install, took around 1 minute as you just thread it together. Much easier to install than a true press-fit BB I imagine however it is around 40g heavier than a Dura-ace BB for example.

With the cranks on but no chain, and the preload set-up on the crank arms you get four or five rotations of the crank before they stop spinning. The bearings seem nice and smooth however I've got no idea how they're going to hold up in the long-run, only time will tell. On the plus side if it does't last long it's easy to uninstall and cheap to replace!

If I had the tools or wanted a shop to complete the build I would probably go for the Dura-ace press-fit as I guess the bearings and seals will be better than the ZTTO, plus it's lighter. Personally I wanted the simplicity of a threaded press-fit as it was a self-build bike and am really happy with it so far.

Airwolf YFM053 build Hi y'all - Long timer reader, first time caller here.

Pulled the trigger on the Airworlf YFM053 and YFMF005 fork back in December and finally able to build it up.

Frameset arrived nicely packaged and the finish was decent for the price - save for a couple sloppy finishing job around a few of the water bottle bosses.

Actual build was straight forward, and I probably made it harder for myself by adding the foam sleeve onto the internal rear hydraulic hose. I did replaced all the bolts the came with the bike as they felt cheap and soft.

Frame came in at 959g, 20g for the hanger/retainer screw, and 552g for the uncut fork. It's about 9.3kg/20.7lb with tubes in both wheels for now. Plenty of space to shave a few pounds but I need to put in some miles first...

Re: FM1001 / FM1156 - 135mm frame I've finally been able to get my bike built up and taken out for its shake down run, my first impressions have me impressed and very happy with choosing this frame.
The bike feels so incredibly stable at speed,  but nimble in the corners.
Taking into consideration I've downsized on the frame size, I'm 184cm tall, I think I have got the right balance that I was looking to achieve for my riding style, yet, coming from a dirtjump and freeride mtb background, will give me that manouverbility and  clearence for the inevetible moment that I forget I'm not 20 years younger and attempt something stupid

There's a few things that need fine tuning. Getting the suspension set up, the gears need a little tweek to get them crisp,  I need to adjust the calipers to remove a slight brake rub, change the saddle, and remove the stickers of the spokes
but overall the bike is pretty close to perfect and Im very happy with how its turned out.

Wing & Carbonda Taking the plunge into the world of Chinese carbon was interesting, to say the least. After much due diligence, I settled on the L FM936 & M FM1001 from Carbonda. I submitted my inquiry and Wing was quick to respond with pricing & general information as to how to conduct the transaction. Communication was superb throughout - including some potential "I might add 3rd, and 4th frame to the order" conversations - and I generally had a reply within 48-72 hours, if not sooner.

Frames arrived well packed, and without any issues, shipping holds, etc. Upon inspecting the frames I found the FM1001 was a L, not the M that was ordered - an easy enough mix-up when pulling orders from the inventory, so I'm not pointing blame/fault at anyone, these things happen.

I contacted Wing, who requested a few photos of the serial number and the small info tag on the inside of the headtube and corrected the mix-up almost immediately. A new M frame is being shipped out, and the L I currently have is repacked, and awaiting shipping tags. Wing said they would send me the tags, to ship to another US-based customer, as soon as they were ready.

As someone who's worked in the cycling industry, in several different roles, for nearly 30 years, I have to say that this is an outstanding example of customer service! As my current role dictates, I have various bikes built up to showcase a range of products, but I try to use bikes that aren't from the "Big-3" or other high visibility brands. Thanks to my experience with Wing & Carbonda, I will definitely be using their frames for my future "showcase" builds!

Re: FM1001 / FM1156 - 135mm frame Took the bike out for longer ride today, and I'm even more happier with my choice in this frame, absolutley flys down hill, yet is so smooth pedaling uphill, with very little bob.

With it being a glorious sunny day I got a few more pics

So difficult to capture the colour in a picture, but did catch the metalic sparkle showing through the candy on the top tube in this shot

This last pic gives a good shot of all the colour variation in the "red" in the sunlight
