Re: New MTBer, Build Advice Welcome roadie, I'm also kinda new to FS world. However i did my research, compared a 140mm hardtail to a 140/150 full suspension bike.

If you are going fast, there are some downside of hardtail, lack of traction is the most obvious one.
Your ride will be much bumpier in high speed. Given you are off the saddle time to time, you may not feel the harshness of the trail but find it confidence breaker.

When i ride hardtail, I can feel even the smallest root or rock. This was a problem for me especially when i was cruising uphill on the saddle and I'm only 30 y/o.

IMO even the shortest full suspension is better than hardtail.
I would go with fm1001 or you can also check Light carbon LCFS958.

Some information about mtb,

Dropper seat post is kinda a must have
You don't need flagship suspension, you need to tune in.
I would say for 100mm travel fork 32mm stanchions are more than ok. Rockshox recon is a good choice at your total price range
120mm travel, i would choose at least 34mm model. rockshox 35 is a budget model.
Stay away from remote lockout models as they only have no compression adjustment.

Rear shock is determined by two length.
Total length, travel length
Take 185x50mm for example, 185mm(eye to eye length) is determined by frame manufacturer stick with that.
There is a maximum travel for a frame exceeding that, your suspension link going to touch the frame.

Take 50mm travel, leverage ratio dictates the travel of the rear wheel. If ratio is 1:2 lets say, you will have 100mm rear travel. These numbers are determined by your suspension link design.
You can install slightly lower travel rear shock, 185x45mm and you will only have 90mm travel.

There is also trunnion mounting. Normally shocks are standard eye to standard eye.
Lately there are lots of trunnion mount to standard eye. I believe thats a better mounting type and doesn't require bushing or mounting hardware.

You also going to need a bushing for the standard eyelet side of the shock also determined by frame manufacturer.
Thats basically a spacer for rear shock.

Also look for flex stays(single pivot) vs horst stay.

Happy builds!

Re: Carbonda Cfr 1056 So I finished my bike about 1 month ago. Very very happy with it. A step (leap?) forwards coming from a Cube Aerial. Very direct, responsive, easy to ride and reassuring. Just rides fast. I go about 3-4km faster with 15 BPM less heartrate in my case. Can't find anything my Cube did better.

Very happy with the end result! Picture was without bartape for easy last minute adjustment of the brake levers. Will take a picture of the driveside one day. But first I've got some KM's to shred! 8)

Re: Recommendations for a carbon saddle? Just received the saddle today via FedEx. Sticker price is ¥699 (~US$105) without shipping and handling, so maybe expect it to retail at that price.

Measurements on the tag were accurate (275mm x 145mm), with the sticker on the packaging stating a 275x150.

Weighs slightly less on my kitchen scale than the 270g advertised.

Looks like they will be coming out with carbon and titanium rail versions.

Smacking this on today and testing it out.

*EDIT*
Post-ride

Did a couple of two hour rides in two different bibs (Rapha and Monton).
I have only tested the Specialized Romin Evo at a shop for 15 mins so I cannot make any direct comparisons.
I can however compare to my previous Chiner Selle Italia saddle that I've ridden for ~2000km.

Pros:
I realise that comfort is supposed to come from the bib padding and not saddle padding but I really did feel a difference in both comfort and support.
I was adjusting my position less and didn't get any numbness in my ass. I felt planted, and even in different positions, my sit bones were well supported.

Cons:
Mud and gunk got trapped in the holes and required some slightly higher pressure washing.
Weight can definitely be a turn off, but I should be the one shedding weight  :(

Mind you, I'm an unfit 91kg rider mostly cycling on a smart trainer, but I'm a convert. Will definitely be ordering the titanium rail version in the future for my brother as a christmas gift (and maybe one for myself).
It's a fifth of the price of a branded 3d saddle for my region, and gives a much better value for my money.

Re: FS830 Enduro Frame - Stef Biggel’s build I promised to write somthing to the build if it is worthy: the last 4 days was worthy. ;D

We done 6500 altitudemeter down in Vinschgau (italy) over long trails (1000-1400m down) in classic natrual S1-S3(short sections) tarrain.

The FS 830 did a mega Job and if i feld uncomforable in short moments, the rider was the problem not the bike.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-177 Just dropping a quick pic/build blurb of my 177 for y'all to see :D

-Frame size M, 420x100 one piece bar and stem
-Total weight is about 8kg/18 lb. as you see it with pedals, cages, mount, etc (without bottles).
-Delivered as an og black frame. Custom paint and decals done by me.
-Groupset: Sram hydro mechanical mashup with Shimano crankset and chain and Deckas lightweight rotors. Centerline XR rotors are sitting on my desk. I'll switch them out eventually, I just have no issue with the performance of the Deckas rotors and they're significantly lighter as well.
-Wheel/tires: 38mm depth/25mm inner width Chinese carbon wheels sourced from OfferUp for a good deal, I think they're Superteam. Matched up with 29mm Enve SES tires. Tubeless setup.
-Saddle: Prologo NDR 143. I miss my carbon Velobuild saddle  :( the VB saddle pooped out and Chris has sent a replacement. Can't wait for it to arrive.
-Photos show the VB seatpost. I'm now running a 0 offset carbon seatpost.
-Time ATAC XC4 Pedals (yes, mtb pedals)

May do a longer review/video/photoshoot later on if time permits, detailing the build specs, issues, build and ride experiences, paint/decal process, etc.

Re: Softail titanium MTB 29/27.5+ (all mountain - bikepacking) Rear travel is hard to measure because of elasticity of ti plate.
I tried to release air from shock, bike upside down, push down the rear wheel and measure the vertical travel.

It is around 60mm.

I made a calculation, considering it is a single pivot, same result 60mm.

If the seat stay angle is low, the travel is bigger.
Some says they have 95mm rear travel with 38mm shock on softails. This is marketing, not truth.

If you opt for a softail, keep in mind that this is not a full suspension bike, but something between a hardtail and FS.

SAG
I ride 25% SAG on shock, and get full travel on jumps. That's perfect to me.
I lock the shock on every uphill, because i like very reactive bike when pedaling.

BB drop
I think you should have a look at hardtail BB drop with same geo, and reduce it by around 20mm.

Mine is 42mm BB drop, whereas Kona ESD hardtail is 62mm (geo quite similar).
I do have pedal strike sometimes on rocks when climbing, but i have the feeling that I am "in" the bike.

I still have the ability to manual when i want.

VB-R-066 D Build I'm a bit surprised there isn't a build thread on this frame on here, or a recent one at least.  I purchased this XS frame from Velobuild for my wife as she needed an upgrade to her 2013 Aluminum Giant Avail with 8 speed Sora.  I ordered on May 11 2022 and received the frame on May 25 2022, so pretty fast turn around which surprised me actually.  This frame almost looks identical in geometry to my Canyon Endurace CF SL 7.

Along with the frame I purchased 2 custom paint colors (pink & chameleon blue) which actually turned ok.  The fade job between colors could be better and maybe we would have picked a lighter chameleon color as the blue tends to look almost black if it isn't light out.  However in the sunlight it does sparkle a bit which is nice.

I also picked up:
$5 carbon spacer pack
$39 carbon VB-HB-009 handlebars (which i asked for 400mm and I believe they sent 420mm, which is OK and it still works but wasn't told ahead of time)
$35 ST-002 80mm carbon fiber stem (right before shipping Chris did send me an email stating he's substituting this stem for the stem that comes along with their 2021 separate handlebar/stem combo.  I didn't get this email till the next morning after shipping occurred and thought it might be ok.  Turns out it was not.  This stem is big, bulky and has a negative angle it seems.  My wife didn't like it too much.  I just ended up buying an aluminum stem from Amazon for $15 and used that.  Chris is being awesome though and said he'd refund me the cost of the stem so I'm happy)

I got a used 105 fully hydraulic groupset off craigslist for $525 which was an awesome find.  The crank is a 52/36 with 172.5mm cranks which might be a bit big for her but time will tell.  It came with a 11-34t cassette, chain, F&R D's, shifters & calipers.  I did have to buy little things like a bottom bracket, a spacer for one of the calipers, 160mm rotors, bottle cages, bar tape etc.

The wheels are from Elite Wheels that I had custom ordered in 50mm depth & 12k twill pattern & 1420 spokes.  I asked them for a quiet hub but it's still pretty loud.  The tires are GP5000's with pink latex tubes.

I didn't build it as there is a guy up my street that sorta runs a bike shop out of his garage.  He charged me $150 to put it all together and that included all gear cables, hydro fluid (I had the hydro cables), installing the groupset, BB  etc.  I thought that was a pretty good price but I do wish I had the patience to learn myself. Maybe, if I end up doing another one...

The weight was a bit disappointing though.  I know the 105 r7020 groupset isn't the lightest but the builder said it weighed 17.9lbs/8.1kgs.  Maybe it was wishful thinking but I thought it would have weighed maybe 7.7kg or even less.  The seat is temporary as we still haven't decided on one to get so maybe that will lower the weight but not sure what else I could have done.

The wife & I have our first real "test ride" tomorrow.  Planning on going 30-40 miles and see how it does but so far seems to be great.  If you have any questions let me know!

Re: Velobuild VB-R-177 Should be picking this up in the next 48 hours! I just need to put on a rear mount, I assumed I could bolt the sram one right to the frame like my old bike!
